Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures caused by temporary brain malfunctions. There are two main types of seizures - generalized seizures which involve the whole brain and cause loss of consciousness, and partial seizures which originate in one area of the brain and may cause abnormal sensations but not loss of consciousness. Educators should be aware of a student's epilepsy history and symptoms, educate other students, and know how to respond safely during a seizure by keeping the student on their side and clearing hazards without restraint.
