3. EPILEPSY
• Temporary disturbance in the electrical
activity of the brain.
• Abnormal and excessive electrical activity of
neurons.
• Epilepsy may occur as a result of genetic
disorder or brain injury (Trauma or Stroke)
• Seizure are a single occurrence, while
epilepsy is a chronic medical condition.

4. Types of Epilepsy
• Partial seizures: Simple Partial Seizures,
Complex Partial Seizures.
• Generalized seizures: Tonic-clonic seizures,
Atonic seizure, Myoclonic seizures, Absence
seizures.

6. Partial Seizures – 2 Types
• These starts in a particular part of the brain.
• Cause both physical and emotional effects and
make the patient feel, see, or hear things that
are not there.
• About 60% of people with epilepsy have this
type of seizures.

8. 1. Simple Partial Seizures
• They change how the patient senses read the
world around them.
• They can make the patient smell or taste
something strange, and make the fingers,
arms, legs twitch.
• Patient might see flashes of light or feel dizzy,
sweaty or nauseated.
• Not likely to lose consciousness.

9. 2. Complex Partial Seizures
• These happens usually happen in the part of
the brain that controls emotion & memory.
• Patient may lose consciousness.
• Patient may do things like gag, lips smacking,
laugh or cry.
• Lasts up to several minutes.

10. Generalized Seizures – 4 Types
1. Tonic-clonic seizures: These are the most
noticeable.
• Body stiffens, jerks, and shakes, lose of
consciousness.
• Lose of control of bladder and bowel activity.
• Lasts up to 3minutes, patients bite the tongue.
Also have breathing problems.

2. Atonic Seizures: Muscles suddenly go limp,
and head may lean forward.
3. Myoclonic Seizures: Sudden jerk of muscles
like shock.

4. Absence Seizures:
• The patient seem disconnected from others
around, don’t respond to others.
• The patient may stare blankly into space.
• Last for few seconds.
• Most common in children under 14 years.
