Review File
▪ Go to the “View Financial Aid Status” screen.
▪ Enter the student’s 10-digit Employee ID in the “ID” field and
applicable aid year.
▪ Review the “Comments” field for any pertinent information
regarding previously completed DL Limit Warnings.
Calculate Aggregates
▪ Calculate aggregate totals based on
dependency status and grade level.
▪ On the NSLDS loan history screen,
review the loan totals.
▪ Note if the student has undergraduate and
graduate loans
▪ Note the totals showing however, they may
be inaccurate. You will need to add the totals
for individual loans for both subsidized and
unsubsidized in Loan Detail to get an
accurate accounting of aggregate loan
amounts.
Calculate Aggregates(continued)
Use the following guidelines to calculate the total amount of subsidized and
unsubsidized loans:
 Use the Agg OPB to determine loan totals.
 Do not include ASU’s current aid year loans if calculating for the current academic
year.
 Calculate undergraduate and graduate loans separately by reviewing the “Acad.
Lv” field. (Grad loans are designated by a letter, undergrad loans are designated by
a number)
▪ Include both FFEL and Direct loans in the sub and unsub totals.
▪ Include “SLS” loans in the unsubsidized totals.
▪ For graduate students, total the undergraduate and graduate loans together for a
total aggregate loan amount.
Dependent Undergrad
▪ When calculating dependent
aggregates, make note of any
unsubsidized denial funds that
are received and total them
separately.
▪ Unsubsidized denial funds (Add.
Unsub) do not count against
dependent aggregate limits.
AggregateTotals
Subsidized: $5500
Unsubsidized: $2000
Unsubsidized Denial: $5000
NOTE: If the student is a dependent student, review the “Add. Unsub” field for a “P.”This signifies one or more of the
unsubsidized loans for that term year is an unsubsidized PLUS denial loan. These are calculated separately. NSLDS will
mark both the unsubsidized loans and the unsubsidized PLUS denial with a “P” in the “Add. Unsub” field. These loans may
be combined together into one unsubsidized loan – you will need to calculate how much of the loan is unsubsidized PLUS
denial and how much is a standard unsubsidized loan based upon annual loan limits.

Special Cases
▪ Medical Loans (HEAL):The medical lifetime loan aggregate
($224,000) is higher than non-medical loans ($138,000). Calculate
HEAL Loans separately and subtract from total loans to determine
remaining non-medical loan eligibility.
▪ Nearing AggregateTotals: If a student is within $200 of their Sub
aggregate limit or total aggregate limit you will need to inflate the
student‘s Sub to $23000 or the student’s total to $57500 in order to
prevent awarding over the applicable aggregate limit.
▪ Consolidated Loans: If a student has consolidated their loans we may
need to manually calculate the totals in order to determine loan
eligibility as additional loans such as Perkins may be included in the
consolidation and should not be included in the aggregate totals.
