Understanding software licensing with IBM Power Systems PowerVM virtualizationJay Kruemcke
One of the key benefits of combining workloads in a virtualized environment is the ability to pay for less than the full capacity of the machine. Unfortunately there are many misconceptions about how software licensing really works in these environments.
The IBM Power Systems PowerVM virtualization technology offers a great deal of flexibility, but that flexibility also results in complexity when determining software license requirements. This presentation covers important licensing considerations for the IBM Power Systems environment.

Building a Secure and Resilient Foundation for Banking at Intesa Sanpaolo wit...Docker, Inc.
Intesa Sanpaolo is one of the first banking groups in the Euro zone, with over 12 million customers and 4,600 branches in Italy. With a lot of traditional monolithic applications that are difficult to maintain and evolve, Intesa turned to Docker to help them both modernize the applications and improve their portability so that they could consider a multi-site architecture across multiple data centers. Using Docker Enterprise Edition (EE), Intesa took the first step to “break the monolith” by containerizing their infrastructure, self-described as an “Infrastructure-as-code” pattern, and now use Docker EE to orchestrate the applications across sites.
In this talk Diego Braga, Infrastructure System Specialist at Intesa, and Lorenzo Fontana, DevOps Engineer at Kiratech will share how they implemented Docker EE along with software-defined networking and storage solutions to validate Intesa’s architectural model and to build a geographical distributed multi-data center cluster, all while saving infrastructure costs and remaining compliant with regulations.
They will highlight their CI/CD process using Docker and Jenkins, how the developer and ops team are now working together to implement a DevOps methodology and Intesa’s ROI in using Docker EE. They will also share Intesa’s future plans, including creating mixed Linux/Windows clusters that use the same overlay network and on-prem/public cloud clusters opportunities.

Enhancing Network Visibility Based On Open Converged Network ApplianceOpen Networking Summit
Dr. Dongheon Lee' and Dr. Junho Suh's presentation from the 2017 Open Networking Summit.
As the mobile traffic carried by cellular networks has been growing rapidly and the networks gets bigger and more complex, network operators have been forced to search for solutions to substantially enhance network visibility. This talk introduces SKT integrated Network Analyzer (TiNA) and Converged Appliance Platform (T-CAP) which help us improving the efficiency of network operation, troubleshooting, and analyzing traffic. TiNA is composed of virtual network packet broker, flow analyzer, high speed packet dump system, connection performance analyzer, and 3D-based network management system. T-CAP is an open architecture of a server-switch type hardware. We will review how to implement those TiNA functions based on open source (e.g., DPDK, Spark Streaming) and T-CAP. Finally, we will also discuss about the use-cases of TiNA and T-CAP for the private cloud & telco network infrastructure.
Continuum PCAP
Cost Effective, Open Network Packet Capture
How do you know what is really coming through your network? Without capturing that traffic, you don't have the means of identifying and solving your security and network performance problems.
Though some organizations have the budgets and infrastructure to record network traffic, many current tools either do not capture all necessary packets, are too expensive to implement on a large scale, or don't easily integrate with other applications. And even companies that are capturing their network data are frustrated by these systems' lack of flexibility, or paying for functionality that they don't really use.
Continuum PCAP solves these problems by fusing the best of both worlds. It is a powerful, affordable enterprise-class packet capture appliance that integrates with your favorite 3rd party or open-source tools, or with your own applications via a REST API.
Similar to Dimitri Bellini - Monitoring Large Multi-Site Data Environment (20)
The wireless network monitoring data are abundant, as it seems relevant store information from devices and users connected, especially in an multicampus environment like Unesp. In this sense, the database tends to increase rapidly the number of records, being necessary to optimize the periodic cleaning routine of Zabbix data. Here are our way of improving the functioning of the "housekeeping" native application. Also will demonstrate the massive use of the data type "Zabbix Trapper" for flexible the list of informations of Wi-Fi infrastructure and techniques varied use of "low level discovery" for monitoring of wireless access points.

Zabbix Conference LatAm 2016 - Rodrigo Mohr - Challenges on Large Env with Or...Zabbix
Scalability on a large environment can be a challenge on many different aspects involving customization of monitors, performance and reporting. The goal of this presentation is to share the experience we had at Dell, monitoring a big number of servers in an environment with constant changes, lots of custom monitors and new servers configured every week. We will present, from our 3 years of experience with Zabbix and Oracle, which positive/negative aspects we have taken from the configuration parameters we used, involving strong use of User Macros, optimization of Database Queries, Table Partitioning and Automation.
The Lojas Renner has always had a close proximity to the Open Source movement in Brazil. Still in the 90s, all the company's POS solutions have been migrated to Linux and in early 2000, migration started in all the company's systems, including the main components of critical infrastructure. Since then, much has changed. The world scene Open Source has become a worldwide standard for all products and companies, making its adoption not only an innovation but a necessity. Understand how since 2008 Zabbix helps us in monitoring the entire IT infrastructure, remote units and our business processes.

Rafael Martinez Guerrero - Zabbix at the University of Oslo | ZabConf2016Zabbix
A case study showing the problems we have resolved with Zabbix and the challenges we had when we implemented Zabbix as the main monitoring tool at the University of Oslo. The number of challenges is not low in an organization as heterogenous as ours, with many thousands of servers and clients, all kinds of devices connected to our infrastructure, different operating systems, multiple locations and hundreds of IT staff. Full automation and delegation of privileges are the key words in the work we have done during the past year and a half.
Wolfgang Alper - Zabbix Meets OPS Control / Rundeck | ZabConf2016Zabbix
Zabbix is an excellent tool to do network monitoring and to alert if something bad happens. But Zabbix can do more. An underestimated feature of Zabbix is its ability to perform actions in addition to simple notifications. However, this requires to precisly setup those actions within zabbix, which is not always an easy task and might duplicate existing work. So what if Zabbix actually worked in concert with an external taskrunner / jobscheduler that is build to do exactly this: run a task or action against a host and report its outcome? Zabbix would perform the same well defined steps that an ops member would perform in case of certain failures using this kind of tool. A well know example of this kind of software is "Rundeck" which is licensed under the Apache License Version 2.0.

Lukáš Malý - Log management ELISA controlled by Zabbix | ZabConf2016Zabbix
Datasys ELISA log management is robust, powerful, yet inexpensive solution for collection, correlation and analysis of logs. Core system consists of the Elasticsearch “noSQL“ database and the web user interface Kibana, which provides high comfort for analysis of detected security incidents and relevant logs. It is common that the database ElasticSearch is distributed to multiple servers to achieve load balancing and high availability of indexed data. ELISA heavily utilizes ZABBIX for user authentication and role based access control, notifications and self-monitoring. Elasticsearch Indices can be managed right in ZABBIX Frontend. ZABBIX "trapper" items and monitoring templates are used to centrally manage configuration of distributed environment of NXlog agents. Agents are capable to securely auto-register as ZABBIX "hosts".

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

SAN Mainframe summary
28 Brocade DCX 8510-8 Backbone Ficon director with 9728 ports
Every Ficon director’s ports are divided in three virtual partitions
named Contexts (Base, Ficon and PPRC contexts)
32 ISL link at 10 Gbps speed to connect Moncalieri to Settimo
Torinese
24 DS8000 IBM Storage devices (3589 Tb) e 21 IBM TS3500 and
TS77x0 Tape Library devices (19742 Tb)
Ficon director is the core of SAN.
Monitoring them allows to control all the network.
10. 9
What’s to be monitored? From past to present.
Alerts directly from
the Ficon director
This allows to know
where is the failure and
to solve the
problem faster.
Alerts from the z/OS
Tracing IOS error messages from
mainframe z/OS. This didn’t allow
to know the type of failure and its
position.
Monitor of the 57% of SAN
Before we monitored only the 16
metropolitan ficon director. We
noticed problems involving only the
ficon contexts.
Monitor all the SAN
To extend control to all
the contexts including geographic
replication (PPRC) and disaster
recovery devices.

Why Zabbix?
Many ways to monitor the SAN
Possibility to collect data using both SNMP protocol, Zabbix trapper and
network simple checks.
Automatic build and update of monitored objects
Using Zabbix low level discovery powerful features we have to set initial
template rules to find all the ports and let the SAN to form itself.
Easily manage great volumes of objects
In our SAN we have a large amount of items per host and 390 NVPS:
1774 items x 72 hosts = 127728 items to be monitored !!!
Tailored front end for NOC and Storage and Data Management
With Zabbix API we can develop a tailored front end fitting different
needs to monitor, manage and analyze problems of SAN.
Zabbix knowledge and support on site
Working side by side with Zabbix expert and front end developers it’s
fundamental to reach our targets.

How Zabbix works in IntesaSanpaolo?
Zabbix connects to all ficon directors through SNMP protocol.
Same of the network checks are made using other protocols (e.g. SSH).

How we structured Zabbix: Hosts and templates
2 Templates to manage context with different severity levels
In our SAN the base context is the most critical because its ISL ports
manage all the traffic that passes from a datacenter to another.
4 host groups: One for each data center
We have created four host groups to fastly recognize the location of
device in trouble and save time in technical resolution of the problem.
72 hosts: every host represent a switch context
This hosts organization has been designed to reflect that each context
transmits distinct kind of data with different severity.
27 Items per port and 14 items per switch context
These are divided in 6 applications that represent different types of item:
2 apps for switch and port technical details and attached device
2 apps for traffic quality (Rx / Tx and port errors)
2 apps for port healthy status and switch hardware controls

A customized front end with Zabbix API
Improve data presentation
We needed better performance
and data organization. Zabbix
maps and Latest data panel were
inadequate for our targets.
WHY? HOW?
High interactive data analysis
Zabbix graphs couldn’t offer
anything else than time range
selection and static information.
Custom extra features for NOC
We needed an advanced system
to track problem management.
Modern and flexible web
technologies utilization
Using javascript framework like
EXTJS we built leaner interfaces
with custom layouts.
Custom powerful graphs
Using HIGHCHARTS advanced
features we take advantage of
items compare, zoom and
customized graphical mode.
DB for events management
Issues are recorded as they happen,
and purged as they are solved.
