Division
A leading telecommunication expert,
Alex’s wealth of knowledge extends
over four decades and two continents
(United States & Europe). Strengthened
with a PHD in Telecommunication
Science, Alex’s significant contributions
to the Telecom Industry are well known
particularly in network Design Roll Outs,
Swaps & Operations and Networks
optimization to fulfill operators KPI’s and
SLA’s as dictated by Operators.
2
Network Evolution
Network technology has come a
long way. In the field of
communications, an evolving
network is assumed, and in turn,
carriers must be proactive in the
evolution of network elements and
performance. Although this is on
every executive’s mind, the
execution of modernization and
network performance has many
variables that can create conflicts.
3
High Speed Network Evolution
The demand for High Speed
Broadband through mobile devices
ha created a new paradigm for
cellular operators networks. The
evolution from 2G, 3G to 4G and
now 5G, has created issues for
carriers that they have not faced in
the past. Overhead on towers and
support infrastructure has to be
considered to make room for new
technology. Decommissioning has
to be addressed now, where in the
past it was largely ignored.
4
Maximize your Networks Potential
Network modernization projects are inevitable, and while they
are large complex projects, the results – in terms of efficiency gains,
coverage and performance – are well worth it. Performance is the main
metric by which carriers shareholders and customers demand alike.
q  Mobile operators are constantly adapting their networks to keep
pace with market changes. Inevitably, adaptation must turn into
a full modernization project – almost always involving
infrastructure replacement and upgrades.
q  Success of these complex projects relies on robust, continuous
optimization. Optimization that is not only swap agnostic, and
de-coupled from the planning, design and rollout processes, but
also capable of handling countless network establishment
processes.
q  Digitechx delivers cross-technology and cross-platform support,
which is an essential element for robust optimization.

Network Optimization Management
Network optimization can be
decoupled from the planning and
rollout phases of the modernized
network, making the overall process
more efficient and faster, and
enabling a seamless transition to full
optimization of the new network.
9
Next Generation Optimization
¤  In today’s complex wireless landscape, network elements
need to be optimized to consider the crowded
environments. This requires a macro approach, considering
all of the elements in the environment and end to end
optimization.
¤  The wireless service contractor has evolved into a “SME”
model over the past10 years and very few are focused on
end to end solutions. This renders inefficient networks with
elements that are not optimized properly.
¤  Digitechx staffs every project with technicians that are
trained in all aspects of wireless technology. This approach
renders a seamless integration and effective optimization,
that considers macro optimization.
10
Audit & Quality Assurance
¤  Network Executives rarely understands the details of their
network performance.
¤  They get lip service and job preservation over form and
function.
¤  Staff is compartmentalized and not versed to examine all
elements of the network.
¤  Digitechx can deliver turnkey end to end audits replete
with solution based reports to determine real network
performance paradigms.
11
Modernization
¤  The evolution of communications technology is on an
exponential path and adopting these changes has
created a competitive market within the industry. Clients
demand these innovations or carriers will be ravaged by
churn.
¤  These value added services and performance have to
be supported with networks that can deliver the goods.
¤  Our engineers integrate new elements to coexist with
legacy equipment, to provide seamless communications
and superior performance.
12
Decommissioning
¤  The deployment of new network technologies not only
means that some older, legacy networks are becoming
outdated, unreliable, and underutilized but also more
expensive to operate and maintain.
¤  Carriers core competencies are the business of building
networks, not dismantling.
¤  52% of wireless operators do not have decommissioning
strategies in place. Those who do have generally
determined that outsourcing a specialist is more efficient
then creating a department to handle it.
13
Decommissioning Life Cycle
¤  Digitechx offers a full
service, turnkey solution
to address all of the
aspects of
decommissioning
projects.
¤  a la Carte services are
offered for those carriers
who have internal staff
to act as PM, but need
individual services and
crews.
14
Asset mitigation
¤  Digitechx has an asset recovery division, whose sole focus
is repurposing excess and surplus equipment.
¤  Our staff of professionals are dedicated to determining
the valuation of used network elements, their useful life,
and obsolescence risk.
¤  Digitechx has thousands of customers in emerging
markets that consistently utilize secondary market
equipment.
15
Carrier Adds
¤  Digitechx can handle all
aspects of carrier adds or
replacements of Antennas,
radios, Amplifiers, BSC,
Power, Plant, Microwave
and Backhaul infrastructure.
¤  We are staffed with 2 man
tiger teams, 3 man and 4
man crews to handle all of
your adds / subs require.

A Case Study
A practical application discussion
17
Case Study – O2
The Network was ranked 4th out of
five UK operators and was loosing
subscribers due to the poor
performance of the network.
Dr. Smyth’s task was to improve the
service from the network by
reducing the MPD (Minutes per
Dropped call ), call completion
rate, call holding time. and network
quality.
18
Case Study – O2 – cont.
Analysis:
Dr. Smyth examined the elements of Radio
Access Network, he looked at the BSC to
ensure inter BSC calls were handing over as
programmed.
He then looked at the Inter MSc handovers
and re mapped the problematic routes
which had a positive result towards the
network operations center.
The next step was to assess the impact of
other antennas in the cluster and all other
environmental elements both internal and
external.
19
Case Study – O2 – cont.
Execution:
First task was to Optimize the existing network by
performing a drive test of the RBS and coverage
areas.
From this and data recorded Smyth was able to
establish the what elements of the network were
not performing.
He first tackled the frequency re-tune of the cells
to avoid the frequency contamination and
imbalance.
Next task was to address the antenna azimuth
and tilts to enhance the radio footprint coverage.
Lastly, he optimized all of the network elements in
the cluster to allow seamless handover.
20
Case Study – O2 – cont.
Results:
We also recommended and implemented
constant network supervision by drive
testing, upgrades to keep the
performance of the network in
compliance with the spectrum License.
The result of the network improvement is
that 02 has been number one performing
network in Europe, for the past ten years,
and has the highest number of subscribers
in the network while maintaining the lowest
churn by subscribers.
With these network improvements, there
was an increase of revenue approaching
20%.
