Digital Citizenship Education means empowering learners through education and developing
the competencies they need to actively learn and participate in our digitally rich society.
Digital Citizenship teaches individuals how to engage and participate in responsible ways
of using technology, in order to protect themselves from internet dangers and respect each
other’s human rights.
Digital citizenship refers to responsible technology use that provides the ability to engage
positively, critically, and competently in society, politics, government, and various digital
environments.

Who are DIGITAL CITIZENS?
A good digital citizens
has a variety of
knowledge, skills, and
values that help them
be responsible users of
ICT, particularly the
internet and mobile
technologies

Specifically, students who are digital citizens:
a. manage their digital identity and reputation and are aware of the result of
their actions in the digital world;
b. engage in positive, safe, legal, and ethical behavior when using technology,
including social interactions online or when using networked devices;
c. demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the rights and obligations
of using and sharing intellectual property; and,
d. manage their personal data to maintain digital privacy and security and are
aware of data-collection technology used to track their navigation online.

A good digital
citizen can also
be regarded as
someone with a
high “digital
intelligence
quotient”, or
DQ
A person with low DQ is susceptible to a range of threats, such as cyberbullying,
grooming, cybercrime, invasion of privacy, overuse of technology, and exposure to
inappropriate or false material

Preventive resilience is the “ability to understand and be aware of potential harm as
well as being able to effectively self-regulate media usage.”
Reactive resilience is the “ability to deal with negative experiences online, tackle adverse
situations and experiences in a problem-focused manner, and turn negative emotions
into positive (or neutral) feelings
(Gerosa, 2017).
A digitally resilient person is aware of online risks, and uses a combination of
strategies—to prevent and respond to these risks.

Digital Citizenship teaches individuals how to engage and participate in responsible ways of using technology, in order to protect themselves from internet dangers and respect each other’s human rights. Digital citizenship refers to responsible technology use that provides the ability to engage positively, critically, and competently in society, politics, government, and various digital environments.

  • 10. “Towards a Culture of Excellence” Preventive resilience is the “ability to understand and be aware of potential harm as well as being able to effectively self-regulate media usage.” Reactive resilience is the “ability to deal with negative experiences online, tackle adverse situations and experiences in a problem-focused manner, and turn negative emotions into positive (or neutral) feelings (Gerosa, 2017). A digitally resilient person is aware of online risks, and uses a combination of strategies—to prevent and respond to these risks.
