DIGITAL MEDIA DEVICES -
• Digital media are any media that are encoded in machine readable
formats.
• Digital media can be create, viewed, distributed, modified and
preserved on digital electronics devices.
• The word ‘DIGITAL’ originates from the fact that these computerized
devices work on binary digits 0 and 1.
LIST OF DIGITAL DEVICES ARE:-
1. Digital Cameras
2. Digital video cameras
3. PDA
4. Gaming systems
5. Video and audio player
6. Mobile phones
Digital Audio Technology:-
•Sound produced naturally is in the form of continuous waves which is known as
analog sound or analog audio.
•When sound was first recorded, it was played on devices called turntables using
LP(Long Playing) records.
•These records stored audio in the analog format.
•The sound has to be digitalized that is converted from to digital form analog (ADC-
analog digital converter) so that it can be played on computers and digital audio
devices.
•The great advantages of digital audio technology is that one can compress audio files
which are normally very large and other side compression affect the quality of audio.
Audio formats fall under three major categories:-
1. UNCOMPRESSED AUDIO FORMATES
• PCM/LPCM(Pulse Code Modulated/Linear Pulse Code Modulated)
• WAV (Waveform Audio Format)
• AIFF(Audio Interchange File Format)
2. LOSSY COMPRESSED AUDIO FORMATS
• MP3/MPEG(Motion Pictures Expert Group)
• AAC(Advanced Audio Coding)
• WMA(Windows Media Audio)
3. LOSSLESS COMPRESSED AUDIO FORMATS
• FLAC(Free Lossless Audio Codec)
• ALAC(Apple Lossless Audio Codec)
• WMA – lossless (Windows Media Audio – lossless)
Converting Digital Audio:-
• Nature sound has an analog format.
• It is converted to digital format by a special device called an Analog
Digital Converter(ADC).
Copying Digital Audio:-
• It must be noted that IPR(Intellectual Property Rights) makes it illegal to
copy audio from internet directly into CDs.
• Also copying of content from CDs/DVDs into other storage devices is
illegal.
• These legal rules are meant to protect the rights of the creator of digital
content and to prevent piracy.
