IMPROVE YOUR DIGESTION
NATURAL WAYS TO IMPROVE DIGESTION
CONCLUSION
DIGESTION :
The process of treating a substance with heat ,
enzymes , or a solvent to promote decomposition or extract
essential component
Chemistry :
It is the study of behavior of changes that undergo
during a reaction
Digestive Chemistry:
it is the study of involvement of chemistry in
the process of digestion
Types of digestion:
There are two types of digestion. As named
bellow
 Mechanical digestion
 Chemical digestion
Different reaction occurring in our digestive
track:
These are the reactions occurring in
digestive system.
CHEMICAL
DIGESTION
• CHEMICAL DIGESTION INVOLVES BREAKING DOWN THE
FOOD INTO SIMPLER NUTRIENTS THAT CAN BE USED BY
THE CELLS. CHEMICAL DIGESTION BEGINS IN THE
MOUTH WHEN FOOD MIXES WITH SALIVA. SALIVA
CONTAINS AN ENZYME (AMYLASE) THAT BEGINS THE
BREAKDOWN OF CARBOHYDRATES
STOMACH ACIDS
• THE STOMACH CONTAINS GASTRIC GLANDS WHICH RELEASE DIGESTIVE ACIDS TO CREATE A LOW PH
ENVIRONMENT (PH ~2)
• THE ACIDIC ENVIRONMENT FUNCTIONS TO DENATURE PROTEINS AND OTHER MACROMOLECULES, AIDING
IN THEIR OVERALL DIGESTION
• THE STOMACH EPITHELIUM CONTAINS A MUCOUS MEMBRANE WHICH PREVENTS THE ACIDS FROM
DAMAGING THE GASTRIC LINING
• THE PANCREAS RELEASES ALKALINE COMPOUNDS (E.G. BICARBONATE IONS), WHICH NEUTRALISE THE
ACIDS AS THEY ENTER THE INTESTINE
BILE
• THE LIVER PRODUCES A FLUID CALLED BILE WHICH IS STORED AND CONCENTRATED WITHIN THE GALL
BLADDER PRIOR TO RELEASE INTO THE INTESTINE
• BILE CONTAINS BILE SALTS WHICH INTERACT WITH FAT GLOBULES AND DIVIDE THEM INTO SMALLER
DROPLETS (EMULSIFICATION)
• THE EMULSIFICATION OF FATS INCREASES THE TOTAL SURFACE AREA AVAILABLE FOR ENZYME ACTIVITY
(LIPASE)
ENZYMES
• ENZYMES ARE BIOLOGICAL CATALYSTS WHICH SPEED UP THE RATE OF A CHEMICAL REACTION (I.E.
DIGESTION) BY LOWERING ACTIVATION ENERGY
• ENZYMES ALLOW DIGESTIVE PROCESSES TO THEREFORE OCCUR AT BODY TEMPERATURES AND AT
SUFFICIENT SPEEDS FOR SURVIVAL REQUIREMENTS
• ENZYMES ARE SPECIFIC FOR A SUBSTRATE AND SO CAN ALLOW DIGESTION OF CERTAIN MOLECULES TO
OCCUR INDEPENDENTLY IN DISTINCT LOCATIONS DIGESTIVE ENZYMES ARE SECRETED PREDOMINANTLY BY
THE PANCREAS, ALTHOUGH OTHER ORGANS ALSO CONTRIBUTE (SALIVARY GLAND, STOMACH)
• THE TYPE OF ENZYME SECRETED AND LOCATION OF SECRETION DEPENDS ON THE SPECIFIC
MACROMOLECULE REQUIRED FOR HYDROLYSIS
CARBOHYDRATES
• CARBOHYDRATE DIGESTION BEGINS IN THE MOUTH WITH THE RELEASE OF AMYLASE FROM THE SALIVARY
GLANDS (AMYLASE = STARCH DIGESTION)
• AMYLASE IS ALSO SECRETED BY THE PANCREAS IN ORDER TO CONTINUE CARBOHYDRATE DIGESTION
WITHIN THE SMALL INTESTINE
• ENZYMES FOR DISACCHARIDE HYDROLYSIS ARE OFTEN IMMOBILISED ON THE EPITHELIAL LINING OF THE
SMALL INTESTINE, NEAR CHANNEL PROTEINS
• HUMANS DO NOT POSSESS AN ENZYME CAPABLE OF DIGESTING CELLULOSE (CELLULASE) AND HENCE IT
PASSES THROUGH THE BODY UNDIGESTED
PROTEIN
• PROTEIN DIGESTION BEGINS IN THE STOMACH WITH THE RELEASE OF PROTEASES THAT FUNCTION
OPTIMALLY IN AN ACIDIC PH (E.G. PEPSIN = PH 2)
• SMALLER POLYPEPTIDE CHAINS ENTER THE SMALL INTESTINE WHERE THEY ARE BROKEN DOWN
BY ENDOPEPTIDASES RELEASED BY THE PANCREAS
• THESE ENDOPEPTIDASES WORK OPTIMALLY IN NEUTRAL ENVIRONMENTS (PH ~ 7) AS THE PANCREAS
NEUTRALISES THE ACIDS IN THE INTESTINE
LIPIDS
• LIPID BREAKDOWN OCCURS IN THE INTESTINES, BEGINNING WITH
EMULSIFICATION OF FAT GLOBULES BY BILE RELEASED FROM THE GALL BLADDER
• THE SMALLER FAT DROPLETS ARE THEN DIGESTED BY LIPASES RELEASED FROM
THE PANCREAS
Nucleic Acids
The pancreas also releases nucleases which digest nucleic acids
(DNA, RNA) into smaller nucleosides
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM AND OUR
ACTIVITIES
• WE IN THIS WORLD OF HUSTLE AND BUSTLE ARE COUNTINOUSLY EFFECTING OUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
BY USING JUNK FOOD
• THIS JUNK FOOD CONTAIN LOTS OF SPICES, SUGAR AND FAT
• NOW WE ARE GOING TO STUDY THE EFFECTS OF JUNK FOOD ON OUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Fast food and its effects of body:
Fast food have a lot of negative effects on our
different body system such as;
Effects on digestion
they contains high spices in it which effects the lining of
stomach i.e. ulcer
Effects on cardiovascular system
It increases the risk of diabetes and sugar that ultematily leads to
heart attack
Increses sugar and fats
It increases the sugar level causing diabetes and fat level also
increases causing obesity and lower metabolic wastes
Increases level of sodium
Increase level of sodium increases the risk of high blood pressure
and stress level which leads to several brain diseases
Effect on respiratory system
Fast food increases the risk of asthma and shortness of breath
Effects on central nervous system
It is proved that depression risk rate is increased 51% with the use
of fast food
Effects on reproductive system
Fertility is greatly effected by these fast food it is strictly
forbidden for ladies in their gestation period (pregnancy) to use
fast food because it can be seriously dangerous for the health of
both mother and baby
Benefits of home cooked food:
home cooked and boiled food have a
lot of benefits on our health. Such as,
Aids in weight loss
Prevents acidity
Treat and prevents kidney stones
Easy to digest
Provides healthy skin
Promotes hair growth
Use as food for babies
Helps in treatment of stomach inflammation
SPICES AND
ASTONISHING EFFECTS
Spices are surprises:
eating spices is always discouringing because we
think that they have negative impacts on our health but they have
surprising and astonishing impacts on our health. These are as
follow.
 Spices keeps your heart healthy
 Spices helps in weight loss and increase
your metabolic weight
 Spicy food are effective pain killer
Things that we consume
with meal
Water
Lemonade
Soda water
Mint leaves tea
Green tea
Cafine
Ginger
Drinking water with meal:
water is an essential
element for our life, but in the case of digestion it has it’s
impact on the way food is digested. water takes 10-15 mins to
digest while, food requires 4 hours for digestion. It is a myth
that water dilutes the acid present in our stomach but we must
have to take water in a very small amount 1 glass is enough and
take it slowly and wisely in three steps because drinking water
at once enters the air with it and it cause gastric problem i.e.
Flatulence(having gas in stomach)
Now we are going to study the
impact of water on digestion.
Effects of water on environment:
Water has different impacts on our
digestion
Before Digestion
After Digestion
Before digestion:
drinking water before meal is a healthy
activity. scientists proved that food particles when entered in
stomach gets attached with enzymes and activity of enzymes
remains ineffective in the presence or absence of water. So water
is just use for easy swalling and gulping of meal. Drinking water
before and between the meal helps you to lost your weight, keeps
your skin soft and freckles, help your food to be engulf easily
After digestion:
drinking water just after taking meal is not
appreciative because, when water is added in the food about the
stomach get confused the amount of acid secreting in digestion
which is digested . Due to which the food is transfer to small
intestine undigested which causes partial digestion, that leads to
constipation obesity and certain other digestive diseases.
LIQUIDS USE TO DIGEST
FOOD
LEMONADE
SODA WATER
