Vocational Scenario:
Dear Thesper:
I want to thank you for giving me the task of finding out how the film industry targets different audiences.
I found I handled my research very nicely as the task that you gave me was very clear and I had no
problems researching it. I will also be investigating how they film poster for ‘attack t block’ targets is
audience.
DIFFERENT WAYS OF DIVIDING AUDIENCE.
Advertising cost a lot of money for example you could spend millions for a 30 second advert on
TV, it’s the same with magazine adverts. What they do is divide the audience in to marketing
groups this way they do not have to spend allot of money to try and make everyone watch the
film this is also more manageable and its more of a realistic goal to a achieve.
Age: Gender:
Sexuality: Life
Style:
Location:
AGE:
There are many age boundaries on media products such as films for
example.
Age Ratings You Trust.
Suitable for all:
Parental guidance:
Cinema release suitable for 12 years and over:
Video release suitable for 12 years and over :
Suitable only for 15 years and over :
Suitable only for adults :
Adult works for licensed premises only:
The U stands for Universal which speaks
for itself, this allows any person to watch
this specific film, they do have a strict
rule not to show any explicit content
such as, drugs, violence, sexual
nudity, strong language etc. but not all U
films are for children there are many for
adults but are just rated U because they
do not contain any content of the above.
PG means parental guidance
these films do contain some
content which 8 year olds and
above should be fine with, but
parents have to decide weather
it would be suitable for their child
to watch it.
12A the A stands for accompanied this being said a
child younger than 12 can watch it with adult
supervision this is only for cinema movies, for dvds
and videos you can only purchase it if you are 12.
15 only requires someone who is over 15 to watch it
you can not watch it if you are younger. It has a big
difference between 12 and 12A for example, it has
strong language, drug usage, nudity etc..
No one under 18 can watch this, there is not
any particular genre to make it an 18 people
are free to choose what film they like to
watch. Its more to do with the explicit content
that it shows. This will have very strong
violence and language, strong blood and
gore, strong portrayals of sexual activity etc..
This can only be watched by people that are
over 18 but are specially licenced to watch
this, it will have very strong sexual content
and can not be owned on dvds but only to be
seen in specially licenced cinemas.
GENDER: FEMALE
I will be analysing two different types of posters for the two genders.
Most women love romantic comedy and this draws them in to watch the
film. As you can see in this poster the women and the man are separated
by a wall this is appealing to the target audience because it shows that
there is a problem to overcome and most of the target audience like to
know how they overcome this problem.
Another thing that will appeal to the target audience is the colour of her
dress which is red. This is drawing most of the target audience in since red
is associated with danger and love this is appealing to the audience
because it shows that the woman is strong and dangerous but loving and
most of the audience want to see a character who is strong and caring.
Another technique they have used which is effective is by using the props there are two love hearts
which are also red the woman is holding one and the man is holding one. This is effective because it
shows you that the film is going to be about love hence the love hearts. This is appealing to the
audience because it gives it away telling the audience that its about love.
GENDER: MALE
This is an action film poster called Hitman the reason why it attracts the
Male audience already is because (hitman) the title already draws them in
giving them the genre of the film. Another reason why it attracts the
audience is because it has a lot of dark colours where as the romcom had
a lot of light colours. The way they are dressed attracts the audience as
well by using formal and quite demanding clothes giving the impression
that something serious is going to happen. Also the colours of the clothes
for example the man on the front has a red tie and the woman in the
background has a red dress, red is the colour of danger this draws the
audience in because they know theirs going to be action. the woman is
also dressed in red showing allot of skin and standing in a sexy pose, this
will attract the audience because the male audience want to aspire or be
like the main character in the movie e.g. They want to be
courageous, strong and have the sexy girl ect.
The props they have e.g. His gun will draw the audience in because it
shows them that guns are going to be used in the action scenes, it is also
a big gun used to show the audience that the man is dominant and under
control.
Gender: war War films are mainly aimed at the older male audience such as 30+
this is because men that have been in the war or in the army will
want to watch it because they can relate to it. It also looks like a war
poster because you can distinctively see five solders. They show
distinct solder far away because it symbolises loneliness, courage
and pride. The genre signifiers in this poster are used to draw the
audience in for example, the four solders in the sky symbolises
friendship sticking together this draws them in because they want to
see what problems they have and how they overcome it as friends.
Also the title itself (Saving private ryan) this is telling the audience a
little in sight of the film telling them that someone is going to be
rescued, this draws them in because the audience want to be
involved and want to know how he is rescued and why he needs
rescuing.
Another reason why it is aimed at the older male audience is because there are many collectable items in
these types of films and in this poster such as, helmets, badges, guns etc. another reason why it appeals
to the target audience is because war posters are often serious and demanding this draws them in
because they can relate to the strict rules that they used to have. There are also many dark colours on
the poster drawing the audience in by telling them that its going to be serious and dangerous. The
solders above look serious and proud to be were they are drawing the audience in because they want to
feel proud of what they have achieved again relating to the poster.

WHY DOSE THE FILM INDUSTRY HAVE REVIEWS
The film industry have reviews so people can read it and get a better understanding of what the film is
about , it also shows the audience how it was made all the production tasks that were undertook etc..
But one of the main reasons why they do it is so the audience can decide weather they want to watch
it, if they like the sound of the review than they would be more interested in watching it, the same with
the ratings. This is important because many people have different opinions of a film, but film reviews
are especially important because its not just some random guy picked up of the street writing it. These
are professionals designed not to be biased it takes years of learning how to do it because everyone
has their own opinion on a film. This is why its very important so people can read the correct
information and make a decision based on what they have read.
FILM SCREENING:
Film screening is showing of a film that has just been released, they often show these films in high
resolution cinemas and in private hours. Here they can talk about the film they will also be
accompanied by food and drink. Their are many different types of film screenings such as
Test screenings:
test screenings are used so that audiences can judge weather the film is good or needs editing, re-
writing or re-shooting, often the film will be unfinished at this stage and audience feedback will be
recorded so they can see what will work effectively. Films may go through multiple test screenings.
Focus group screenings:
Focus group screenings is very similar to test screening an audience of maybe 25 to 30 people. Focused
groups are often asked to talk about the film in detail and share onions on what they thought about the
film. Also they are often asked to fill out questionnaires and are also asked to be interviewed. Focus
groups give back a lot of information but are expensive to run due to a lot of recording time etc..
Critic screenings:
Critic screenings are held for major market critics before they print and are released into television
production-cycles. They do this if a studio has negative reviews, or if a film is still being edited until
immediately before released.
Responding to my
audience feedback
I think I responded well to my audience feedback as I was doing my thriller trailer people noticed I did
not have many inter titles, I then put them on and the audience started to understand the narrative of
my thriller trailer they also said they liked it more.
I also asked the audience what they thought of my promotional video I had very negative feedback
e.g. not many teachers in the video, shots out of place and I also had student represent the school
instead of the head teacher. I took all of these points into account I filmed and edited some shots
again and asked the audience what they thought. The feedback was positive from my fellow students I
even asked my teacher for feedback and she gave me positive answers.

Different ways of dividing audience

  • 1. Vocational Scenario: Dear Thesper: I want to thank you for giving me the task of finding out how the film industry targets different audiences. I found I handled my research very nicely as the task that you gave me was very clear and I had no problems researching it. I will also be investigating how they film poster for ‘attack t block’ targets is audience.
  • 2. DIFFERENT WAYS OF DIVIDING AUDIENCE. Advertising cost a lot of money for example you could spend millions for a 30 second advert on TV, it’s the same with magazine adverts. What they do is divide the audience in to marketing groups this way they do not have to spend allot of money to try and make everyone watch the film this is also more manageable and its more of a realistic goal to a achieve. Age: Gender: Sexuality: Life Style: Location:
  • 3. AGE: There are many age boundaries on media products such as films for example. Age Ratings You Trust. Suitable for all: Parental guidance: Cinema release suitable for 12 years and over: Video release suitable for 12 years and over : Suitable only for 15 years and over : Suitable only for adults : Adult works for licensed premises only:
  • 4. The U stands for Universal which speaks for itself, this allows any person to watch this specific film, they do have a strict rule not to show any explicit content such as, drugs, violence, sexual nudity, strong language etc. but not all U films are for children there are many for adults but are just rated U because they do not contain any content of the above. PG means parental guidance these films do contain some content which 8 year olds and above should be fine with, but parents have to decide weather it would be suitable for their child to watch it. 12A the A stands for accompanied this being said a child younger than 12 can watch it with adult supervision this is only for cinema movies, for dvds and videos you can only purchase it if you are 12.
  • 5. 15 only requires someone who is over 15 to watch it you can not watch it if you are younger. It has a big difference between 12 and 12A for example, it has strong language, drug usage, nudity etc.. No one under 18 can watch this, there is not any particular genre to make it an 18 people are free to choose what film they like to watch. Its more to do with the explicit content that it shows. This will have very strong violence and language, strong blood and gore, strong portrayals of sexual activity etc.. This can only be watched by people that are over 18 but are specially licenced to watch this, it will have very strong sexual content and can not be owned on dvds but only to be seen in specially licenced cinemas.
  • 6. GENDER: FEMALE I will be analysing two different types of posters for the two genders. Most women love romantic comedy and this draws them in to watch the film. As you can see in this poster the women and the man are separated by a wall this is appealing to the target audience because it shows that there is a problem to overcome and most of the target audience like to know how they overcome this problem. Another thing that will appeal to the target audience is the colour of her dress which is red. This is drawing most of the target audience in since red is associated with danger and love this is appealing to the audience because it shows that the woman is strong and dangerous but loving and most of the audience want to see a character who is strong and caring. Another technique they have used which is effective is by using the props there are two love hearts which are also red the woman is holding one and the man is holding one. This is effective because it shows you that the film is going to be about love hence the love hearts. This is appealing to the audience because it gives it away telling the audience that its about love.
  • 7. GENDER: MALE This is an action film poster called Hitman the reason why it attracts the Male audience already is because (hitman) the title already draws them in giving them the genre of the film. Another reason why it attracts the audience is because it has a lot of dark colours where as the romcom had a lot of light colours. The way they are dressed attracts the audience as well by using formal and quite demanding clothes giving the impression that something serious is going to happen. Also the colours of the clothes for example the man on the front has a red tie and the woman in the background has a red dress, red is the colour of danger this draws the audience in because they know theirs going to be action. the woman is also dressed in red showing allot of skin and standing in a sexy pose, this will attract the audience because the male audience want to aspire or be like the main character in the movie e.g. They want to be courageous, strong and have the sexy girl ect. The props they have e.g. His gun will draw the audience in because it shows them that guns are going to be used in the action scenes, it is also a big gun used to show the audience that the man is dominant and under control.
  • 8. Gender: war War films are mainly aimed at the older male audience such as 30+ this is because men that have been in the war or in the army will want to watch it because they can relate to it. It also looks like a war poster because you can distinctively see five solders. They show distinct solder far away because it symbolises loneliness, courage and pride. The genre signifiers in this poster are used to draw the audience in for example, the four solders in the sky symbolises friendship sticking together this draws them in because they want to see what problems they have and how they overcome it as friends. Also the title itself (Saving private ryan) this is telling the audience a little in sight of the film telling them that someone is going to be rescued, this draws them in because the audience want to be involved and want to know how he is rescued and why he needs rescuing. Another reason why it is aimed at the older male audience is because there are many collectable items in these types of films and in this poster such as, helmets, badges, guns etc. another reason why it appeals to the target audience is because war posters are often serious and demanding this draws them in because they can relate to the strict rules that they used to have. There are also many dark colours on the poster drawing the audience in by telling them that its going to be serious and dangerous. The solders above look serious and proud to be were they are drawing the audience in because they want to feel proud of what they have achieved again relating to the poster.

  • 10. WHY DOSE THE FILM INDUSTRY HAVE REVIEWS The film industry have reviews so people can read it and get a better understanding of what the film is about , it also shows the audience how it was made all the production tasks that were undertook etc.. But one of the main reasons why they do it is so the audience can decide weather they want to watch it, if they like the sound of the review than they would be more interested in watching it, the same with the ratings. This is important because many people have different opinions of a film, but film reviews are especially important because its not just some random guy picked up of the street writing it. These are professionals designed not to be biased it takes years of learning how to do it because everyone has their own opinion on a film. This is why its very important so people can read the correct information and make a decision based on what they have read. FILM SCREENING: Film screening is showing of a film that has just been released, they often show these films in high resolution cinemas and in private hours. Here they can talk about the film they will also be accompanied by food and drink. Their are many different types of film screenings such as Test screenings: test screenings are used so that audiences can judge weather the film is good or needs editing, re- writing or re-shooting, often the film will be unfinished at this stage and audience feedback will be recorded so they can see what will work effectively. Films may go through multiple test screenings.
  • 11. Focus group screenings: Focus group screenings is very similar to test screening an audience of maybe 25 to 30 people. Focused groups are often asked to talk about the film in detail and share onions on what they thought about the film. Also they are often asked to fill out questionnaires and are also asked to be interviewed. Focus groups give back a lot of information but are expensive to run due to a lot of recording time etc.. Critic screenings: Critic screenings are held for major market critics before they print and are released into television production-cycles. They do this if a studio has negative reviews, or if a film is still being edited until immediately before released. Responding to my audience feedback I think I responded well to my audience feedback as I was doing my thriller trailer people noticed I did not have many inter titles, I then put them on and the audience started to understand the narrative of my thriller trailer they also said they liked it more. I also asked the audience what they thought of my promotional video I had very negative feedback e.g. not many teachers in the video, shots out of place and I also had student represent the school instead of the head teacher. I took all of these points into account I filmed and edited some shots again and asked the audience what they thought. The feedback was positive from my fellow students I even asked my teacher for feedback and she gave me positive answers.
