but there are subtle differences.
The older term, electromechanics, came into practice in 1885,
when engineering students took courses in it. It’s only a
combination of two disciplines, electrical and mechanical

Prior to say, 1950, only a few purely electrical devices were
used. The few included the light bulb and the radio. To get

electrical signals with mechanical components and assemblies.
In 1947, with the invention of the transistor, the world was on
its way become electronic. Electronics were the cheap, less
prone to making or installation errors, and with no movable
parts, wear was never an issue. Electronics also introduced the
computer technology and software.
In the late 1960s, Yaskawa used electronic controls on its
electric motors. That’s suddenly an engineer in the firm coined
the term “mechatronics.” It soon became widespread and
accepted as a combination of electronic and mechanical
engineering. Yaskawa even got the term registered as a
trademark.
But the major differences between previous electromechanical
devices and mechatronic versions was that the latter gave
more flexibility in design and operation. A small chip replaced
several devices and could be programmed to perform different
tasks using the same devices. Mechatronics also improve the
speed and possible precision. It also made automatic data
collection and reporting possible.
Some engineers also feel that mechatronics came out of
robotics.
In the 1990s, mechatronics included communication among
machines, like networked manufacturing devices. Soon, IT,
control engineering, and sensors and actuators came under
mechatronics.
Two main forces drive mechatronics today: It allows designers
design new products and processes rapid and cheap, and it
aids companies to meet the global demands and keep up with
the universal competition.
The fact is that, yet mechatronics doesn't have a universally
accepted definition. For instance, Purdue University’s
engineering schools began a program for mechatronics
technology that includes mechanical design, yielding, and
electrical control depended on packaging machinery. Its goal
