While battling her cancer, Alex persisted in her yearly lemonade stand, and word spread of the brave and smiling girl’s efforts. Others were inspired to set up their own lemonade stand and donate the sales to her cause.
When she passed away of cancer at the age of eight in 2004, her inspirational lemonade stand had raised over $1 million towards cancer research. In 2005, her parents established ALSF. Diakonia Addresses Issues of Homelessness
- 2. Based in Ocean City, Maryland, attorney J. Christopher Llinas has practiced in the areas of employment, collections, and insurance law. A dedicated marathon runner, Christopher Llinas donated some $5,000, raised through the Ironman Foundation, to Diakonia, a nonprofit organization that addresses factors involving homelessness. Founded in 1972, the agency does more than maintain a place to sleep. For people on the verge of becoming homeless, Diakonia offers a wide range of programs that include counseling and mentoring. Under certain circumstances, it grants financial assistance for housing-related issues.
- 3. The number of beds for those in need of shelter varies from 35 to 45 in two shelters. Diakonia helps individuals stabilize their lives through guidance that addresses the reasons they lost their homes. The agency uses a case management approach and frequently enlists the help of other support organizations. Diakonia raises money for its operations partly through a thrift store and reaches out to the community through its monthly food pantry. The agency relies on volunteers for much of its work, including such tasks as grant writing, transporting clients, giving food, and drafting resumes.
