Cryotherapy can be used prophylactically for retinal breaks and detachments or areas of abnormal vitreoretinal adhesion. It has advantages of being applicable through the full thickness sclera or hazy media but disadvantages include breakdown of the blood-retinal barrier and increased risk of cystoid macular edema.

Burns can be caused by heat, chemicals, electricity, and sunlight. Thermal burns are classified by depth and extent of damage and include first, second, and third degree burns. Chemical and electrical burns require immediate irrigation or disabling of the source. All burns require evaluation of severity and extent of injury, with minor burns treated locally and larger or deeper burns referred for medical care.

The skin is the largest organ of the body and has three layers - the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The epidermis is the outermost waterproof layer that protects against microbes. The dermis lies beneath the epidermis, contains connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands. The deepest layer, the hypodermis, is made of fat and connective tissue. Assessment of the integumentary system involves history, physical exam, and diagnostic tests like biopsies, cultures, and patch tests to identify skin conditions.

Frostbite is a thermal injury to the skin caused by prolonged exposure to cold temperatures, resulting in ice crystals forming in and around skin cells due to reduced blood flow.
