Dr. Bulent Kanol discusses the role of civil society organizations and how to enhance dialogue between the EU and civil society. He defines civil society organizations as those working for the public good outside of business and government. There are three categories: member-based unions and associations, public benefit/advocacy organizations, and non-profit support organizations. Civil society represents collective interests and citizens' aspirations. With globalization, states are less interventionist while multinationals extend their influence. Civil society provides services, promotes interests of labor and capital, and advocates for corporate social responsibility and effective regulations.
