Jörg Schad - NO ONE PUTS Java IN THE CONTAINER - Codemotion Milan 2017Codemotion
The current craze of Docker has everyone sticking their processes inside a container… but do you really understand cgroups and how they work? Do you understand the difference between CPU Sets and CPU Shares? Spark is a Scala application that lives inside a Java Runtime, do you understand the consequence of what impact the cgroup constraints have on the JRE? This talk starts with a deep understand of Java’s memory management and GC characteristics and how JRE characteristics change based on core count. We will continue the talk looking at containers and how resource isolation works.
During the presentation, participants went over secrets under the hood of Node.js and discovered how exactly it communicates with the operation system.
Also, asynchronous behavior implementation on Node.js was dwelt upon and the ways of applying this knowledge for solving business tasks presented.

Taking Cloud to Extremes: Scaled-down, Highly Available, and Mission-critical...Altoros
We consider uses cases typical for some advanced applications of Cloud architectures incorporating Cloud Foundry PaaS. High-Availability, Fault-Tolerance, scaling down to smaller form-factors while operating in mission-critical environments - all these requirements put constraints on architecture, configuration, and testing. Cloud Foundry's operation depends on the number of external and internal dependencies. Points of failure may exist on different levels stretching from hardware / IaaS foundation to microservices.
As engineers we spend much of our time getting stuff to production and making sure our infrastructure doesn’t burn down out right. Does our platform degrade in a graceful way or what does a high cpu load really mean? What can we learn from level 1 outages to be able to run our platforms more reliably.
From things like Infrastructure as Code, Service Discovery and Config Management to replicated databases, caching strategies and geo spatial considerations of the replicas. We have tried, failed and tried again until we got to a solution that works for us.
This allows for teams to quickly put infrastructure in place while allowing teams to seperate deployment and release phases of their work without having to switch over big bang style.
This talk will guide us through the moving parts of our highly reliable and available drupal setup. The audience will see an analysis of the good, the bad and the ugly side of our setup and will show ways for them to validate theirs.
In this talk I go over how Bankrate leveraged Terraform to go from a company where infrastructure was provisioned via tickets to a team to a company where developers fully own their own infrastructure. No tickets, no paging for help, no bottlenecks - just education and enablement. Interested in hearing the talk? Please reach out!

There and Back Again (My DevOps journey) - DevOps Days Copenhagen 2018Giulio Vian
devopsdays Copenhagen
April 24-25, 2018
https://www.devopsdays.org/events/2018-copenhagen/
In this talk, you will hear about the DevOps journey in our company, from the initial brown-field all-manual state, to our current partially automated situation and the strategic destination of a fully automated and monitored process.
In equilibrium between an high-level view and useful practical tips, we will touch on what informed our decisions, in terms of priorities and technologies, some lessons learned in setting up Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform for Azure, and how the legacy constraints helped or hindered.
Let's face it: config management has grown up so far that the problems slowing us down are for most of them not technical anymore. From common DevOps misconception to the way we pay our technical debt, we can use config management and automation to actually improve and attract all the people that are not playing the game yet. This talk will enlight some great moves that happened in this world recently and show that anything can be automate properly now. Then I will take some examples on how you can improve and shave the last yaks.

2019 StartIT - Boosting your performance with BlackfireMarko Mitranić
A workshop held in StartIT as part of Catena Media learning sessions.
We aim to dispel the notion that large PHP applications tend to be sluggish, resource-intensive and slow compared to what the likes of Python, Erlang or even Node can do. The issue is not with optimising PHP internals - it's the lack of proper introspection tools and getting them into our every day workflow that counts! In this workshop we will talk about our struggles with whipping PHP Applications into shape, as well as work together on some of the more interesting examples of CPU or IO drain.
No matter what language you use, developing code is the same ñ spec, code, deploy, maintain. The “Big Boys” have teams to manage each task, but what happens when you don’t? I’ll go over some different methods for maintaining internal and external programs that are cheap, open source, and make your life easier. PHP has a plethora of tools for us to use to effectively code and maintain our projects; and the best part is that they are generally inexpensive or even free. The trick is finding and using these tools effectively in a workflow that the developer can use.
Version Control in Machine Learning + AI (Stanford)Anand Sampat
Starting with outlining the history of conventional version control before diving into explaining QoDs (Quantitative Oriented Developers) and the unique problems their ML systems pose from an operations perspective (MLOps). With the only status quo solutions being proprietary in-house pipelines (exclusive to Uber, Google, Facebook) and manual tracking/fragile "glue" code for everyone else.
Datmo works to solve this issue by empowering QoDs in two ways: making MLOps manageable and simple (rather than completely abstracted away) as well as reducing the amount of glue code so to ensure more robust end-to-end pipelines.
This goes through a simple example of using Datmo with an Iris classification dataset. Later workshops will expand to show how Datmo can work with other data pipelining tools.

TUTORIAL: Digital Forensics and Incident Response in the Cloud
Cloud technologies have made it easier for organizations to adapt rapidly to changing IT needs. Teams may acquire (and destroy) new computing resources at a press of a button providing for very flexible deployment environment. While this capability is generally useful, it does come at the cost of increasing management overheads and particularly degraded security posture. Traditionally, IT managers have provided visibility into organizational inventories and could use this information to enforce org wide standard operating environments (SOEs), institute patching regimes etc. However, with the advent of cloud computing, every team can create new VMs and containers on a whim for both production and development use, typically consisting of the cloud service provider's SOE offering.
In this tutorial we explore open source tools available for managing cloud deployments. In particular we look at the endpoint monitoring solutions provided by Google's Rekall Agent and Facebook's OSQuery and how these can be integrated into typical cloud deployments. Delegates should be able to walk away from this tutorial being able to install and manage a cloud deployment of Rekall Agent and OSQuery on their VM endpoints.
These solutions allow the administrators to gain insight into their enterprise wide deployment. For example, one could ask questions such as:
What is the current patch level of all my cloud VM's and containers for each software package? Which VM's are in need of patching? Which VMs have been created recently, and do they comply with minimum security hardening standards?
Who has remote access to my VM's? E.g. via ssh authorized_keys? Via cloud IAM's security policy?
Do any VM's contain a particular indicator of compromise? E.g. Run a YARA signature over all executables on my virtual machines and tell me which ones match.

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
