Development and operational control of two string maximum power point trackers in dc distribution systems

This paper develops an operational control system for two maximum power point trackers used with two photovoltaic string panels in a DC distribution system connected to the AC grid via a bidirectional inverter. The paper introduces a topology for the MPPTs that uses buck and boost converters to handle the wide output voltage range of the PV panels. It also presents methods for online checking of the PV string configuration, maximum power point tracking using perturbation and observation, and current balancing of the two parallel MPPT modules. Experimental results are provided to validate the configuration check and current balancing, as well as to demonstrate maximum power tracking performance and power conversion efficiency.

It is known from the fact that Harmonic Distortion is one of the main power quality problems frequently encountered by the utilities. The harmonic problems in the power supply are caused by the non-linear characteristic based loads. The presence of harmonics leads to transformer heating, electromagnetic interference and solid state device mal-functioning. Hence keeping in view of the above concern, research has been carried out to mitigate harmonics. This paper presents an analysis and control methods for hybrid active power filter using Discrete Pulse Width Modulation and Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) for Power Conditioning in distribution systems. The Discrete PWM has the function of voltage stability, and harmonic suppression. The reference current can be calculated by ‘d-q’ transformation. In SVPWM technique, the Active Power Filter (APF) reference voltage vector is generated instead of the reference current, and the desired APF output voltage is generated by SVPWM. The THD will be decreased significantly by SVPWM technique than the Discrete PWM technique based Hybrid filters. Simulations are carried out for the two approaches by using MATLAB, it is observed that the %THD has been improved from 1.79 to 1.61 by the SVPWM technique.

This paper deals with the design and performance analysis of a three-phase single stage solar photovoltaic integrated unified power quality conditioner (PV-UPQC). The PV-UPQC consists of a shunt and series connected voltage compensators connected back to back with common DC-link.The shunt compensator performs the dual function of extracting power from PV array apart from compensating for load current harmonics. An improved synchronous reference frame control based on moving average filter is used for extraction of load active current component for improved performance of the PVUPQC. The series compensator compensates for the grid side power quality problems such as grid voltage sags/swells. The compensator injects voltage in-phase/out of phase with point of common coupling (PCC) voltage during sag and swell conditions respectively. The proposed system combines both the benefits of clean energy generation along with improving power quality. The steady state and dynamic performance of the system are evaluated by simulating in Matlab-Simulink under a nonlinear load. The system performance is then verified using a scaled down laboratory prototype under a number of disturbances such as load unbalancing, PCC voltage sags/swells and irradiation variation.

Inverter Design using PV System Boost Converter
Many types of renewable energy, such as photovoltaic (PV), wind, tidal, and geothermal energy, have attracted a lot of attention over the past decade. Among these natural resources, the PV energy is a main and appropriate renewable energy for low-voltage dc-distribution systems, owing to the merits of clean, quiet, pollution free, and abundant. In the dc-distribution applications, a power system, including renewable distributed generators (DGS), dc loads (lighting, air conditioner, and electric vehicle), and a bidirectional inverter, is shown in fig. 1,in which two PV arrays with two maximum power point trackers (MPPTS) are implemented. However, the I–V characteristics of the PV arrays are nonlinear, and they require MPPTS to draw the maximum power from each PV array. Moreover, the bidirectional inverter has to fulfill grid connection (sell power) and rectification (buy power)with power-factor correction (PFC) to control the power flow between dc bus and ac grid,and to regulate the dc bus to a certain range of voltages, such as 380± 10 v.

Design and Performance Analysis of Three-Phase Solar PV Integrated UPQC
This paper deals with the design and performance analysis of a three-phase single stage solar photovoltaic integrated unified power quality conditioner (PV-UPQC). The PV-UPQC consists of a shunt and series connected voltage compensators connected back to back with common DC-link.The shunt compensator performs the dual function of extracting power from PV array apart from compensating for load current harmonics. An improved synchronous reference frame control based on moving average filter is used for extraction of load active current component for improved performance of the PVUPQC. The series compensator compensates for the grid side power quality problems such as grid voltage sags/swells. The compensator injects voltage in-phase/out of phase with point of common coupling (PCC) voltage during sag and swell conditions respectively. The proposed system combines both the benefits of clean energy generation along with improving power quality. The steady state and dynamic performance of the system are evaluated by simulating in Matlab-Simulink under a nonlinear load. The system performance is then verified using a scaled down laboratory prototype under a number of disturbances such as load unbalancing, PCC voltage sags/swells and irradiation variation.

Inverter Design using PV System Boost Converter
Many types of renewable energy, such as photovoltaic (PV), wind, tidal, and geothermal energy, have attracted a lot of attention over the past decade. Among these natural resources, the PV energy is a main and appropriate renewable energy for low-voltage dc-distribution systems, owing to the merits of clean, quiet, pollution free, and abundant. In the dc-distribution applications, a power system, including renewable distributed generators (DGS), dc loads (lighting, air conditioner, and electric vehicle), and a bidirectional inverter, is shown in fig. 1,in which two PV arrays with two maximum power point trackers (MPPTS) are implemented. However, the I–V characteristics of the PV arrays are nonlinear, and they require MPPTS to draw the maximum power from each PV array. Moreover, the bidirectional inverter has to fulfill grid connection (sell power) and rectification (buy power)with power-factor correction (PFC) to control the power flow between dc bus and ac grid,and to regulate the dc bus to a certain range of voltages, such as 380± 10 v.

Using 180 nm complementary metal-oxidesemiconductor (CMOS) technology, the proposed MPPT was designed, simulated, and layout in virtuoso cadence. The system is attached to a twocell in series that generates a 5.2 V average output voltage, 656.6 mA average output current, and power efficiency of 95%. The final design occupies only 1.68 mm2 .
A Novel Approach for Power Quality Improvement in Distributed Generation
This document discusses passive filter designs for improving power quality in standalone photovoltaic (PV) systems. the proposed method, the voltage difference between the
desired voltage, network voltage, and load voltage has been
investigated. In Fig. 10, the results of the proposed controller
method and the PWM switching method are compared to
prove the ef ciency of the proposed controller method.
STATCOM compensates for symmetrical voltage swell and
voltage sag with the PWM switching method, but the steady-
state voltage difference is greater than STATCOM with the
proposed control.

This document describes a global maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm for photovoltaic arrays under partial shading conditions. The algorithm uses an improved perturb and observe method to iteratively adjust the voltage input to a boost converter connected to the PV array in order to extract the maximum available power. Simulation and hardware results show the algorithm is able to track the global MPP under various non-uniform insolation patterns, outperforming conventional MPPT methods. The algorithm was tested on a PV array subjected to different insolation levels on each panel, and it successfully delivered the maximum available power to the load in each case with only around 2W of converter losses.

of DSPC controllers for MC-UPFC show decoupled active and reactive power control, zero steady-state
tracking error, and fast response times. Compared to an MC-UPFC using active and reactive power
linear controllers based on a modified Venturing high-frequency PWM modulator, the experimental
results of the advanced DSPC-MC guarantee faster responses without overshoot and no steady state

This paper proposes a hybrid wireless mesh network (WMN) architecture that allows the backbone to utilize random connections to access points (APs) in a wireless local area network (WLAN). Theoretical analysis shows that the capacity of a three-tier hybrid WMN is affected by the number of mesh router cells connected to APs, the ratio of access link bandwidth to backbone link bandwidth, and traffic balance among routers with AP access. Simulation results demonstrate that configuring APs and balancing traffic can significantly improve network capacity in the proposed hybrid architecture by taking advantage of wired connections through APs.

DEVELOPMENT AND OPERATIONAL CONTROL OF TWO-STRING MAXIMUM POWER POINT TRACKERS IN DC DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS ABSTRACT: This paper develops the operational control of two maximum power point trackers (MPPTs) for twostring photovoltaic (PV) panels in dc distribution systems. This dc distribution system is connected to ac grid via a bidirectional inverter. Two PV strings and two MPPTs are implemented in this system. The proposed MPPT topology consists of buck and boost converters to deal with wide output voltage range of PV panels. To accurately determine the input current of MPPTs, the PV-string configuration check is accomplished online. The perturbation and observation method are applied for maximum power point tracking. Moreover, the current balancing of two MPPT modules in parallel is achieved. In this paper, the system configuration and the operational principle of the proposed MPPT are first introduced. Afterward, the perturbation and observation method and the mode transition are demonstrated. Flowcharts of the online PV-string configuration check and current balancing are explained. The validity of configuration check and current balancing is verified via the experimental results. Maximum power tracking performance and power conversion efficiency are also obtained.
