What did you like about your image?
The things I like about my image are the way it differentiates from the original image I
chose. This is because I decided to be creative and add a snowing effect to my image using
the eclipse tool whilst holding the (shift) button to transform the eclipse into a perfect
circle. I chose to use a perfect circle instead of a snowflake shape as I thought that this
would match with the simplistic design of the overall picture. Another thing I like about my
image is how the colours are close to a real life representation of the animal. I managed to
create this representation by using the colour selector to duplicate the colour of the section
I was recreating with the shape tool.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I was to do this image again I would add more detail. The detail I would add to the image
is shading. I would do this because in the original picture the penguin has a lighter patch of
white on its front from where the sunlight is hitting. I would create this shading by using the
eclipse tool tool to cover a small section of the front and then use the colour selector to
obtain the same colour as the rest of the section. Once I have selected this I will make the
colour much lighter in order to give a shading appearance and make the image look all
together more professional. Another detail I could add to my image is fading between the
black and white sections, I could improve the transition between these colours in the image
through the use of shading.
Rotoscope
Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
The first thing I like about my image is the way that the clothes on my person look as
though they are tightly fitted, much like in the original image. I did this by rotoscoping
each of the creases in the shirt and creating them through separate layers. By doing
this I was able to recreate the shape of the shirt and how it fitted to my person.
Furthermore, I used the zoom tool in Photoshop to give me a closer view of the lines I
was following with the selector. This allowed me to make smaller sections at a time
and take more care with rounded sections of the image such as the shoulders. I
thought that this helped me because it added a sense of photorealism and also
prevented the image from looking too unrealistic with straight edges in the wrong
places.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to do the rotoscoping of this image again I would add more detail to the facial
features. The detail I would add is the small and subtle wrinkles around the face such
as next to the eyes and around the nose. I would make these subtle by selecting a
slightly darker colour to the rest of the face, therefore making the features noticeable,
but not exaggerated. I would also change the appearance of the eyes. This is because I
think that they look too fake due to me not spending enough time and neglecting to
add features such as the iris.
Film Quotes
Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
The first thing I like about my image is the way that certain features of the image have
photorealism through the use of shading. An example of this in my image is the
persons ears. I used the selector to create a new layer of a smaller section inside the
image, after doing so I used the colour selector to copy the colour of the outside of
the ear and made it slightly darker, giving the impression that this section was inside
the ear and way from as much light as the outside of the ear, thus making it darker.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to do this rotoscoping again, I would ensure to go more carefully around the
lines. This is because after hiding the layer of the original image I was rotoscoping, I
then discovered that the image has lots of gaps such as the gaps between the suit and
the neck. I would also add detail to the suit, such as the lines which separate the
sleeve from the rest of the blazer. This would give the image more photorealism as at
the moment the picture looks as though I have used the paint bucket tool to fill
sections of the image. However, by adding shading and more detail, the image would
look more true to life.
Text Based
Text Based
Text Based
Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I like this image because it depicts the different techniques and tools Photoshop offers
which allow you to create interesting and unique designs with text. Examples of these
tools are the stroke tool. The stroke tool allows you to create a border around your
text. This gives the text a bold appearance that stands out from the rest of the page.
You can also change the colour of the stroke. This means that you can create colour
patterns with the colour of the actual text and the stroke which borders each letter.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to do the clipping mask technique again; I would pick a more recognisable
image. This is because the image I chose was large and meant that only a small section
of the image was being depicted in the text. I would therefore choose an image which
is simply the focal point with no backdrop or surrounding distractions. Furthermore, I
could dramatically alter the tracking of the letters in a word. For example, my last
name, which is a lot longer than my first name, could be shrunk down so a much
smaller width than my first name, creating a strange illusion that the longest word has
less width than the smallest.
Comic Book
Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I like how my image has an increased amount of detail compared to the original, and
grabs the viewers attention. I created this comic book effect by duplicating the layer of
the image and the emphasizing the detailing of the lines in the picture, such as further
depicting the lines that make up spider-man’s suit and also adding darker shades of
colour to areas such as the face in order to give the character a more abstract look.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to do this comic book effect again, I would choose a different picture as a
starting point. This is because the image I selected for this piece has a white
background, meaning that when I tried to create effects and exaggerate the strengths
of colours using the hue/saturation tool, the white border around the image turned
into a different colour and created a rectangular shape around the character. A way I
could avoid this would be to rotoscope the character and create a new layer which
separates it from the white surrounding.
Photo Story
Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
The things I like about my image is the way that each picture helps to develop the narrative of
the photo story. Another feature I like of my photo story is the way that I have changed the
colour of the character’s shirt. I did this in order to convey the different emotions that the
character is feeling as the narrative progresses. For example, when he first finds the key, his shirt
is red. This is a representation of the character’s feelings of danger and fear towards the key.
Another example of this is the character’s blue shirt when he first picks up the key, I chose the
blue shirt because this conveys his emotion of intrigue towards the keys purpose.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to do this photo story again, I would reduce the amount of text for each image. I would
do this so that the viewer has to work harder to figure out what the narrative of the image is.
This will also allow each reader to have their own interpretation of how the character is feeling
and what they think the key is for. I think this is a good technique used by a lot of writers,
because it is making the audience think a lot more, instead of spoon feeding them with the
narrative. I would also change the type of text I use in my image, this is because the text I have
used is a mundane black. Whereas, if I had white text with a small black stroke, I think the text
would have much more of a comic book feel.

Initial Ideas
Idea Generation
Mind map
This is a mad map which exemplifies all the ideas I have brainstormed for my
children’s book. The idea I have chosen to go with is the Little Red Riding
Hood adaptation story. I have chosen this because I like the idea of switching
the roles between the wolf and the little girl, which I feel will create an
intriguing and unique story.
Chosen idea
My chosen idea is an adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood. The way my story differs from the original is by switching
the traditional role of the antagonist from the wolf to the girl.
Title – I have tried to keep the title of the story as close to the original as possible in order for the book to be
recognizable and nostalgic for parents when they are looking for a children’s book to purchase.
Script – The narrative of the story will follow the original, however because the antagonist is a child, the wolf will
make comments on how un-wolf like she is. The reason behind this is because the wolf is only young and fears
humans.
Characters – The little girl at the start of the story is revealed to be a wolf and the cousin to the Little brown wolf.
However, the wolf is then transformed into a human by the evil witch of the woods, the witch turns the wolf into a
human because she knows that the Little brown wolf has a fear of humans.
Environment – The environment for my story is the woods. The woods will also include a path in-between the trees,
which the Little brown wolf uses to make his way to his cousins cottage.
Illustrations – I will use the rotoscoping technique to trace around a real life wolf, this will give my book a sense of
photorealism, as opposed to looking like a traditional children’s book where the illustrations are purposely made to
look as though they have been hand drawn by an artist.
Look/graphics – The graphics of my book will be simplistic, yet effective. I have chosen to go with a simplistic
approach for my illustrations, this is because from the illustrations I have researched, I tend to find that the more
simplistic designs look the best.
These are several images which I used as inspiration for my adaptation on the traditional story. During my
research of the story, I noticed that every story has followed the original template of the wolf being the
antagonist and Little Red Riding Hood being the protagonist of the story. This is the main reason for me
choosing to switch the roles between the two characters. I think that by doing this, it will enable me to
develop an interesting narrative. Furthermore, I think that the moral of the story will have a lot more
meaning. The reason for this is because unlike the original, where the moral is for children not to trust
strangers, no matter how sweet and innocent they seem. My story will provide the moral that just because
someone appears dangerous and angry, such as the character of the wolf, they could actually have a very
quiet personality and be shy.
Another reason why I wanted to switch the roles is because in all of the illustrations the wolf is depicted as
being the hunter and is portrayed in dark colours, which give the appearance of an evil and sinister
character. In conclusion to these findings I think that the idea of a wolf being afraid of humans will give the
story a hint of humor for the reader to enjoy.
Environments
Mood
Board
This is one of the environments I liked the look
of. I like this environment because it has a
wooden trail, which is essential to the narrative
of my story. The design of the illustration is also
very simplistic, meaning easier production.
The reason I chose to add this image to my mood
board is because I think that it would be an easy
idea to take influence from. The reason for this is
because I feel that the trees would be easy to
create as this illustration looks as though the same
tree has been replicated over and over again.
The reason I like this environment is because it provides
me with an idea of a plot twist I could add to my story,
such as the protagonist having to overcome an obstacle,
such as a river. This will give my story a stronger narrative.
This is an environment which I wasn’t too impressed with,
however I added it to my mood board as a reminder to myself
that sometimes too much detail can look worse than a simplistic
design, displayed by the other environments in my mood board.
I chose to include this illustration as I felt
that it is a good idea because I would be
able to create a similar illustration, whilst
including my protagonist walking to their
destination, this way the reader gets a
direct view of where the character is walking.
I like the top font, this is because it gives the text
a fun and outlandish appearance. Where as, in
my opinion, ordinary font such as comic sans,
comes across as boring and repetitive.
I like this font, however I feel that its appearance and
layout is too complex and beyond the reading abilities
of the children my book is aimed towards. The joining
of the letters also adds to this problem as the shaping
of the letters is entirely different to the letters the child
will be used to seeing.
The main feature of this font is the variation in
colours between each line. This is appealing for
children as the text doesn’t appear boring and
mundane, instead it is bright and vibrant,
encouraging the children to read and altogether
enjoy the story more.
This font has a slightly bolder appearance to the
other fonts. This gives the text a larger presence on
the page. Furthermore, the boldness of the text
makes the letters more clear, therefore making the
text more suitable for a children’s reading
capabilities.

Story Overview
My story is an adaptation on the classic story of little red riding hood, titled ‘Little brown wolf’. The story begins
with the little brown wolf making his way to his cousin’s cottage. The narrative reveals at the beginning that
because the little brown wolf is very young, he fears humans. Whilst the little brown wolf continues his journey,
the cousin wolf is captured by an evil witch, who is plotting to capture the little brown wolf. The evil witch is
aware of the little brown wolf’s fear of humans, and therefore decides to cast a spell on the cousin wolf and
turn her into a human child. The evil witch does so in the hope that when the little brown wolf lays eyes on the
human, he will run out of the house and into the trap she has set.

Audience
The target audience for my book is 1-10 year olds. I have chosen this age because I
think that the reading abilities of the children in this age group will be suitable for
the reading abilities required from my book. My book is aimed at both genders, this
is because the story is not aimed at one specific gender and the colours wont be
chosen to appeal to a particular gender. I think my target audience will be working
and middle class. I think this because upper class people are more likely to use
audio books or another type of device to educate their children. Also, the book text
inside the book will be simple sentences which will suit the reading abilities of the
child. Furthermore, the font of the text will be an easy to read one, which isn't over
complicated with lots of curves and joint letters.
Production Methods
The methods I am going to use during my production are the rotoscoping. I will use
the rotoscoping tool to take the outline from pictures of real life animals/people. An
example of this is the wolf, to create this I will use the polygon lasso tool to
rotoscope the wolf. I have chosen to rotoscope around these real life
animals/people, as opposed to rotoscoping cartoonish designs. This is because I
want the characters in my illustrations to have an added sense of photorealism.
What are the strengths of the proposal? What areas of the proposal need further work?
The proposal has a good amount of detail and there
are a lot of ideas which sound interesting.
There is a lot of precision on what you are planning
to do and accuracy so that your book can be as
good as possible.
There is already a lot of detail, however to add
more work you could explain further why you would
use the techniques such as rotoscoping.
You could also give more disadvantages and
advantages.
What are the strengths of the idea generation? What areas of idea generation could have been
further developed?
I like the idea of the wolf being scared of humans
rather than humans being scared of wolves as it
adds a twist to the story.
I also like how magic was used. “cast a spell.”
To develop your idea or make your story better you
should have a moral to the story rather than your
ending as its not suitable for young children if the
book ends badly, or some children may be
frightened.
You could also name the cousin wolf something
else as I found it complicated to keep up with who
was who as brown wolf and cousin wolf seem too
similar. 2
What are the strengths of the proposal? What areas of the proposal need further work?
Very well thought out idea and the idea is full and
fleshed out. Good amounts of research used and
presented and lots of info laid out in a well
positioned ways, good used of images.
Maybe more diverse and complex mood boards
would give a better understanding of the kind of tale
and illustration style you are going for. More detail
maybe need on the kind of illustration style you will
be going for and maybe what book you could be
taking influence from.
What are the strengths of the idea generation? What areas of idea generation could have been
further developed?
Great idea to flip a well know story trope on its
head and to also add in original characters such as
the witch and the magic element. I think is this will
translate really well to a young audience and get
them to use their imagination.
Maybe more fleshing out of the characters
themselves, why are they there? What are they
doing/thinking. Helps to make the characters
people we actually care for and root for.
What are the strengths of the proposal? What areas of the proposal need further work?
• Have done a great detail of work and explain
why they have done this.
• Has a clear understanding about they audience
and who they are.
• A clever idea for a story and not just copying the
original
• Say why you have chosen to do only 10 pages
• Why landscape
• Why only 15 x 23cm / 23 x 15cm
What are the strengths of the idea generation? What areas of idea generation could have been
further developed?
• Has a clear understanding about what they are
looking for and why.
• Have looked into other story ideas and what he
could do with them.
• Has a idea of what he wants his book to look
like and feel like
• Has a good idea of the font he would like to
use.
• Use more images on the first mood board,
make the images smaller to fit more in.
• Add images of the real world to the environment
mood board to show what you want it to look
like.
Feedback Summary
Sum up your feedback.
I am pleased with the feedback I received. This is because I received both positive
feedback and constructive criticism in order to help me improve on my work.
Which parts of your feedback do you agree with and why?
I agree with the sections of feedback such as developing on the characters and giving an
explanation as to why they are where they are/who they are/background information.
Which parts of your feedback do you disagree with and why?
I disagree with adding smaller images into my mood board. I disagree with this because I
have added lots of annotation to the images. I did this to express my opinions on each
image and think about whether I would take inspiration from the images and express
the influences in my own work.

Little Red Riding hood script
Once upon a time there lived in a certain village a little country girl, the prettiest creature who was ever seen. Her mother
was excessively fond of her; and her grandmother doted on her still more. This good woman had a little red riding hood
made for her. It suited the girl so extremely well that everybody called her Little Red Riding Hood.
One day her mother, having made some cakes, said to her, "Go, my dear, and see how your grandmother is doing, for I hear
she has been very ill. Take her a cake, and this little pot of butter."
Little Red Riding Hood set out immediately to go to her grandmother, who lived in another village.
As she was going through the wood, she met with a wolf, who had a very great mind to eat her up, but he dared not,
because of some woodcutters working nearby in the forest. He asked her where she was going. The poor child, who did not
know that it was dangerous to stay and talk to a wolf, said to him, "I am going to see my grandmother and carry her a cake
and a little pot of butter from my mother."
"Does she live far off?" said the wolf
"Oh I say," answered Little Red Riding Hood; "it is beyond that mill you see there, at the first house in the village."
"Well," said the wolf, "and I'll go and see her too. I'll go this way and go you that, and we shall see who will be there first."
The wolf ran as fast as he could, taking the shortest path, and the little girl took a roundabout way, entertaining herself by
gathering nuts, running after butterflies, and gathering bouquets of little flowers. It was not long before the wolf arrived at
the old woman's house. He knocked at the door: tap, tap.
"Who's there?"
"Your grandchild, Little Red Riding Hood," replied the wolf, counterfeiting her voice; "who has brought you a cake and a
little pot of butter sent you by mother."
The good grandmother, who was in bed, because she was somewhat ill, cried out, "Pull the bobbin, and the latch will go
up."
The wolf pulled the bobbin, and the door opened, and then he immediately fell upon the good woman and ate her up in a
moment, for it been more than three days since he had eaten. He then shut the door and got into the grandmother's bed,
expecting Little Red Riding Hood, who came some time afterwards and knocked at the door: tap, tap.
"Who's there?”
Original Script
http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/type0333.html
Little Red Riding Hood, hearing the big voice of the wolf, was at first afraid; but believing her grandmother
had a cold and was hoarse, answered, "It is your grandchild Little Red Riding Hood, who has brought you a
cake and a little pot of butter mother sends you."
The wolf cried out to her, softening his voice as much as he could, "Pull the bobbin, and the latch will go up."
Little Red Riding Hood pulled the bobbin, and the door opened. The wolf, seeing her come in, said to her,
hiding himself under the bedclothes, "Put the cake and the little pot of butter upon the stool, and come get
into bed with me."
Little Red Riding Hood took off her clothes and got into bed. She was greatly amazed to see how her
grandmother looked in her nightclothes, and said to her, "Grandmother, what big arms you have!"
"All the better to hug you with, my dear."
"Grandmother, what big legs you have!"
"All the better to run with, my child."
"Grandmother, what big ears you have!"
"All the better to hear with, my child."
"Grandmother, what big eyes you have!"
"All the better to see with, my child."
"Grandmother, what big teeth you have got!"
"All the better to eat you up with."
And, saying these words, this wicked wolf fell upon Little Red Riding Hood, and ate her all up.
Story Breakdown
Little Red Riding Hood story breakdown.
At the beginning of the story we are introduced to Little Red Riding Hood, she is described in detail as being
the prettiest creature anyone has ever seen and is loved by everyone.
Little Red Riding Hood is asked by her mother to take her grandma a cake and a little pot of butter. She sets
off immediately to follow her mothers orders and take the things to her grandma.
She meets a wolf. The wolf wants to eat her however he is conscious of the woodcutters nearby. When
asked by the wolf where she is going, she tells her that she is going to see her grandmother and deliver cake
and a pot of butter.
The wolf challenges Little Red Riding Hood to a race to the grandmothers house. They take separate paths,
the wolf takes the short path and Little Red Riding Hood takes the longer path.
The wolf tricks the grandmother into thinking he is Little Red Riding Hood. The wolf leaps on the
grandmother and eats her. The wolf then gets into bed and puts on the grandmothers nightclothes.
Little Red Riding Hood arrives at the house and is invited in by the wolf who is impersonating the
grandmother. The wolf invites Little Red Riding Hood into the bed with her.
Little Red Riding Hood begins to comment on how her grandmother looks different than usual. She goes on
to describe the different features she is noticing about her grandmother.
The wolf continues to reply to every comment with a reasoning behind every body part that Little Red Riding
Hood is noticing. Until eventually, when asked about his teeth, the wolf replies “all the better to eat you with.”
and ate Little Red Riding Hood.

Draft Script
Once upon a time there was a young wolf, because of his little body and brown fur, all of the people in the woods would call him “Little Brown
Wolf.” Even with his huge bravery and courage, Little Brown Wolf was very young and trusting. His biggest fear, more than anything, was the sight
of a human.
One bright morning the Little Brown Wolf decided he wanted to visit his cousin, Barky. Little Brown Wolf wanted to surprise Barky with a cake
that he had made especially for her. Little Brown Wolf skipped his way through the woods, until eventually he was faced with an obstacle. A tree
had fallen over the river’s bridge; the bridge was Little Brown Wolf’s only way of getting to Barky’s cottage.
“Bang!” A huge bang and a large flash appeared in front of Little Brown Wolf, he closed his eyes until he could see again. When he opened them,
the tree which was blocking the bridge had vanished. Without a thought or a worry, Little Brown Wolf continued his journey.
Barky was sat in her chair, in a deep sleep. Until, “bang!” A huge bang and a large flash woke Barky from her sleep, but her eyes stayed shut as
the flash was too bright. Once her eyes were able to open, she saw a tall lady in a black cloak looking down on her.
“I am The Wicked Witch Of The Woods.” said the witch in her most evil voice. Barky sat in her chair shocked and unable to move. “Scared of
humans is Little Brown Wolf?” laughed the witch. With a flick of her wand she cast a spell onto Barky, which transformed her into a human child.
Barky looked down at her furry paws, instead to find the human hands of a child. The Witch disappeared before Barky was able to look up and
ask to be returned back to her wolf body.
There was a gentle knock at the door of the cottage. Barky slowly opened the door to see Little Brown Wolf standing alone. “It’s me, your cousin,
Barky!” said Barky hoping to convince Little Brown Wolf. With a turn and a dash, Little Brown Wolf ran as fast as he could; away from the human
child.
Little Brown Wolf was running and running through the woods as fast as his Little Brown Legs would carry him, suddenly everything became dark
and the Little Brown Wolf cried for help. “Silly Little Brown Wolf” said the Wicked Witch Of The Woods. Little Brown Wolf had fallen straight into
the Witch’s trap; and was never, ever, seen again.
Barky, who was still in her human body, continued to look for Little Brown Wolf for years to come. Eventually, the people of the woods began to
recognize Barky for the hood she would always wear. From then on, she was known by everyone as “Little Red Riding Hood.”

Barky opened the door to find a human woman, however her skin had an unusual green sparkle. “Good morning, I have been sent to deliver a
message from Little Brown Wolf” said the woman in her softest most innocent voice. Barky was unsure if she should trust the woman with green
sparkles on her skin.
“Not to be rude, but why is your skin glowing with green sparkles?” asked Barky. The woman’s smile disappeared, and as it did, the green
sparkles grew bigger and bigger until her skin was completely green. “I am The Wicked Witch Of The Woods.” shouted the witch in her most evil

My digital flat plans reflect my initial ideas for each page and act as a
template for me to base my final product around. The digital flat plans
are helpful as they give me an idea of what the final piece will look like,
however if I don’t like the look of it, I can quickly create another flat
plan to see if a different technique works better.
The digital flat plans also allow me to create a mock up of the whole

Development

  • 5. Evaluation What did you like about your image? The things I like about my image are the way it differentiates from the original image I chose. This is because I decided to be creative and add a snowing effect to my image using the eclipse tool whilst holding the (shift) button to transform the eclipse into a perfect circle. I chose to use a perfect circle instead of a snowflake shape as I thought that this would match with the simplistic design of the overall picture. Another thing I like about my image is how the colours are close to a real life representation of the animal. I managed to create this representation by using the colour selector to duplicate the colour of the section I was recreating with the shape tool. What would you improve if you did it again? If I was to do this image again I would add more detail. The detail I would add to the image is shading. I would do this because in the original picture the penguin has a lighter patch of white on its front from where the sunlight is hitting. I would create this shading by using the eclipse tool tool to cover a small section of the front and then use the colour selector to obtain the same colour as the rest of the section. Once I have selected this I will make the colour much lighter in order to give a shading appearance and make the image look all together more professional. Another detail I could add to my image is fading between the black and white sections, I could improve the transition between these colours in the image through the use of shading.
  • 7. Evaluation What did you like about your image? The first thing I like about my image is the way that the clothes on my person look as though they are tightly fitted, much like in the original image. I did this by rotoscoping each of the creases in the shirt and creating them through separate layers. By doing this I was able to recreate the shape of the shirt and how it fitted to my person. Furthermore, I used the zoom tool in Photoshop to give me a closer view of the lines I was following with the selector. This allowed me to make smaller sections at a time and take more care with rounded sections of the image such as the shoulders. I thought that this helped me because it added a sense of photorealism and also prevented the image from looking too unrealistic with straight edges in the wrong places. What would you improve if you did it again? If I were to do the rotoscoping of this image again I would add more detail to the facial features. The detail I would add is the small and subtle wrinkles around the face such as next to the eyes and around the nose. I would make these subtle by selecting a slightly darker colour to the rest of the face, therefore making the features noticeable, but not exaggerated. I would also change the appearance of the eyes. This is because I think that they look too fake due to me not spending enough time and neglecting to add features such as the iris.
  • 9. Evaluation What did you like about your image? The first thing I like about my image is the way that certain features of the image have photorealism through the use of shading. An example of this in my image is the persons ears. I used the selector to create a new layer of a smaller section inside the image, after doing so I used the colour selector to copy the colour of the outside of the ear and made it slightly darker, giving the impression that this section was inside the ear and way from as much light as the outside of the ear, thus making it darker. What would you improve if you did it again? If I were to do this rotoscoping again, I would ensure to go more carefully around the lines. This is because after hiding the layer of the original image I was rotoscoping, I then discovered that the image has lots of gaps such as the gaps between the suit and the neck. I would also add detail to the suit, such as the lines which separate the sleeve from the rest of the blazer. This would give the image more photorealism as at the moment the picture looks as though I have used the paint bucket tool to fill sections of the image. However, by adding shading and more detail, the image would look more true to life.
  • 13. Evaluation What did you like about your image? I like this image because it depicts the different techniques and tools Photoshop offers which allow you to create interesting and unique designs with text. Examples of these tools are the stroke tool. The stroke tool allows you to create a border around your text. This gives the text a bold appearance that stands out from the rest of the page. You can also change the colour of the stroke. This means that you can create colour patterns with the colour of the actual text and the stroke which borders each letter. What would you improve if you did it again? If I were to do the clipping mask technique again; I would pick a more recognisable image. This is because the image I chose was large and meant that only a small section of the image was being depicted in the text. I would therefore choose an image which is simply the focal point with no backdrop or surrounding distractions. Furthermore, I could dramatically alter the tracking of the letters in a word. For example, my last name, which is a lot longer than my first name, could be shrunk down so a much smaller width than my first name, creating a strange illusion that the longest word has less width than the smallest.
  • 15. Evaluation What did you like about your image? I like how my image has an increased amount of detail compared to the original, and grabs the viewers attention. I created this comic book effect by duplicating the layer of the image and the emphasizing the detailing of the lines in the picture, such as further depicting the lines that make up spider-man’s suit and also adding darker shades of colour to areas such as the face in order to give the character a more abstract look. What would you improve if you did it again? If I were to do this comic book effect again, I would choose a different picture as a starting point. This is because the image I selected for this piece has a white background, meaning that when I tried to create effects and exaggerate the strengths of colours using the hue/saturation tool, the white border around the image turned into a different colour and created a rectangular shape around the character. A way I could avoid this would be to rotoscope the character and create a new layer which separates it from the white surrounding.
  • 17. Evaluation What did you like about your image? The things I like about my image is the way that each picture helps to develop the narrative of the photo story. Another feature I like of my photo story is the way that I have changed the colour of the character’s shirt. I did this in order to convey the different emotions that the character is feeling as the narrative progresses. For example, when he first finds the key, his shirt is red. This is a representation of the character’s feelings of danger and fear towards the key. Another example of this is the character’s blue shirt when he first picks up the key, I chose the blue shirt because this conveys his emotion of intrigue towards the keys purpose. What would you improve if you did it again? If I were to do this photo story again, I would reduce the amount of text for each image. I would do this so that the viewer has to work harder to figure out what the narrative of the image is. This will also allow each reader to have their own interpretation of how the character is feeling and what they think the key is for. I think this is a good technique used by a lot of writers, because it is making the audience think a lot more, instead of spoon feeding them with the narrative. I would also change the type of text I use in my image, this is because the text I have used is a mundane black. Whereas, if I had white text with a small black stroke, I think the text would have much more of a comic book feel.

  • 23. Idea Generation Mind map This is a mad map which exemplifies all the ideas I have brainstormed for my children’s book. The idea I have chosen to go with is the Little Red Riding Hood adaptation story. I have chosen this because I like the idea of switching the roles between the wolf and the little girl, which I feel will create an intriguing and unique story.
  • 24. Chosen idea My chosen idea is an adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood. The way my story differs from the original is by switching the traditional role of the antagonist from the wolf to the girl. Title – I have tried to keep the title of the story as close to the original as possible in order for the book to be recognizable and nostalgic for parents when they are looking for a children’s book to purchase. Script – The narrative of the story will follow the original, however because the antagonist is a child, the wolf will make comments on how un-wolf like she is. The reason behind this is because the wolf is only young and fears humans. Characters – The little girl at the start of the story is revealed to be a wolf and the cousin to the Little brown wolf. However, the wolf is then transformed into a human by the evil witch of the woods, the witch turns the wolf into a human because she knows that the Little brown wolf has a fear of humans. Environment – The environment for my story is the woods. The woods will also include a path in-between the trees, which the Little brown wolf uses to make his way to his cousins cottage. Illustrations – I will use the rotoscoping technique to trace around a real life wolf, this will give my book a sense of photorealism, as opposed to looking like a traditional children’s book where the illustrations are purposely made to look as though they have been hand drawn by an artist. Look/graphics – The graphics of my book will be simplistic, yet effective. I have chosen to go with a simplistic approach for my illustrations, this is because from the illustrations I have researched, I tend to find that the more simplistic designs look the best.

  • 26. These are several images which I used as inspiration for my adaptation on the traditional story. During my research of the story, I noticed that every story has followed the original template of the wolf being the antagonist and Little Red Riding Hood being the protagonist of the story. This is the main reason for me choosing to switch the roles between the two characters. I think that by doing this, it will enable me to develop an interesting narrative. Furthermore, I think that the moral of the story will have a lot more meaning. The reason for this is because unlike the original, where the moral is for children not to trust strangers, no matter how sweet and innocent they seem. My story will provide the moral that just because someone appears dangerous and angry, such as the character of the wolf, they could actually have a very quiet personality and be shy. Another reason why I wanted to switch the roles is because in all of the illustrations the wolf is depicted as being the hunter and is portrayed in dark colours, which give the appearance of an evil and sinister character. In conclusion to these findings I think that the idea of a wolf being afraid of humans will give the story a hint of humor for the reader to enjoy.
  • 27. Environments Mood Board This is one of the environments I liked the look of. I like this environment because it has a wooden trail, which is essential to the narrative of my story. The design of the illustration is also very simplistic, meaning easier production. The reason I chose to add this image to my mood board is because I think that it would be an easy idea to take influence from. The reason for this is because I feel that the trees would be easy to create as this illustration looks as though the same tree has been replicated over and over again. The reason I like this environment is because it provides me with an idea of a plot twist I could add to my story, such as the protagonist having to overcome an obstacle, such as a river. This will give my story a stronger narrative. This is an environment which I wasn’t too impressed with, however I added it to my mood board as a reminder to myself that sometimes too much detail can look worse than a simplistic design, displayed by the other environments in my mood board. I chose to include this illustration as I felt that it is a good idea because I would be able to create a similar illustration, whilst including my protagonist walking to their destination, this way the reader gets a direct view of where the character is walking.
  • 28. I like the top font, this is because it gives the text a fun and outlandish appearance. Where as, in my opinion, ordinary font such as comic sans, comes across as boring and repetitive. I like this font, however I feel that its appearance and layout is too complex and beyond the reading abilities of the children my book is aimed towards. The joining of the letters also adds to this problem as the shaping of the letters is entirely different to the letters the child will be used to seeing. The main feature of this font is the variation in colours between each line. This is appealing for children as the text doesn’t appear boring and mundane, instead it is bright and vibrant, encouraging the children to read and altogether enjoy the story more. This font has a slightly bolder appearance to the other fonts. This gives the text a larger presence on the page. Furthermore, the boldness of the text makes the letters more clear, therefore making the text more suitable for a children’s reading capabilities. Font Mood Board
  • 29. Proposal Dimensions 10 pages (landscape) 15 x 23cm / 23 x 15cm Story Overview My story is an adaptation on the classic story of little red riding hood, titled ‘Little brown wolf’. The story begins with the little brown wolf making his way to his cousin’s cottage. The narrative reveals at the beginning that because the little brown wolf is very young, he fears humans. Whilst the little brown wolf continues his journey, the cousin wolf is captured by an evil witch, who is plotting to capture the little brown wolf. The evil witch is aware of the little brown wolf’s fear of humans, and therefore decides to cast a spell on the cousin wolf and turn her into a human child. The evil witch does so in the hope that when the little brown wolf lays eyes on the human, he will run out of the house and into the trap she has set. • 30. Deadline 22/4/16 Audience The target audience for my book is 1-10 year olds. I have chosen this age because I think that the reading abilities of the children in this age group will be suitable for the reading abilities required from my book. My book is aimed at both genders, this is because the story is not aimed at one specific gender and the colours wont be chosen to appeal to a particular gender. I think my target audience will be working and middle class. I think this because upper class people are more likely to use audio books or another type of device to educate their children. Also, the book text inside the book will be simple sentences which will suit the reading abilities of the child. Furthermore, the font of the text will be an easy to read one, which isn't over complicated with lots of curves and joint letters. Production Methods The methods I am going to use during my production are the rotoscoping. I will use the rotoscoping tool to take the outline from pictures of real life animals/people. An example of this is the wolf, to create this I will use the polygon lasso tool to rotoscope the wolf. I have chosen to rotoscope around these real life animals/people, as opposed to rotoscoping cartoonish designs. This is because I want the characters in my illustrations to have an added sense of photorealism.
  • 31. What are the strengths of the proposal? What areas of the proposal need further work? The proposal has a good amount of detail and there are a lot of ideas which sound interesting. There is a lot of precision on what you are planning to do and accuracy so that your book can be as good as possible. There is already a lot of detail, however to add more work you could explain further why you would use the techniques such as rotoscoping. You could also give more disadvantages and advantages. What are the strengths of the idea generation? What areas of idea generation could have been further developed? I like the idea of the wolf being scared of humans rather than humans being scared of wolves as it adds a twist to the story. I also like how magic was used. “cast a spell.” To develop your idea or make your story better you should have a moral to the story rather than your ending as its not suitable for young children if the book ends badly, or some children may be frightened. You could also name the cousin wolf something else as I found it complicated to keep up with who was who as brown wolf and cousin wolf seem too similar. 2
  • 32. What are the strengths of the proposal? What areas of the proposal need further work? Very well thought out idea and the idea is full and fleshed out. Good amounts of research used and presented and lots of info laid out in a well positioned ways, good used of images. Maybe more diverse and complex mood boards would give a better understanding of the kind of tale and illustration style you are going for. More detail maybe need on the kind of illustration style you will be going for and maybe what book you could be taking influence from. What are the strengths of the idea generation? What areas of idea generation could have been further developed? Great idea to flip a well know story trope on its head and to also add in original characters such as the witch and the magic element. I think is this will translate really well to a young audience and get them to use their imagination. Maybe more fleshing out of the characters themselves, why are they there? What are they doing/thinking. Helps to make the characters people we actually care for and root for.
  • 33. What are the strengths of the proposal? What areas of the proposal need further work? • Have done a great detail of work and explain why they have done this. • Has a clear understanding about they audience and who they are. • A clever idea for a story and not just copying the original • Say why you have chosen to do only 10 pages • Why landscape • Why only 15 x 23cm / 23 x 15cm What are the strengths of the idea generation? What areas of idea generation could have been further developed? • Has a clear understanding about what they are looking for and why. • Have looked into other story ideas and what he could do with them. • Has a idea of what he wants his book to look like and feel like • Has a good idea of the font he would like to use. • Use more images on the first mood board, make the images smaller to fit more in. • Add images of the real world to the environment mood board to show what you want it to look like.
  • 34. Feedback Summary Sum up your feedback. I am pleased with the feedback I received. This is because I received both positive feedback and constructive criticism in order to help me improve on my work. Which parts of your feedback do you agree with and why? I agree with the sections of feedback such as developing on the characters and giving an explanation as to why they are where they are/who they are/background information. Which parts of your feedback do you disagree with and why? I disagree with adding smaller images into my mood board. I disagree with this because I have added lots of annotation to the images. I did this to express my opinions on each image and think about whether I would take inspiration from the images and express the influences in my own work.
  • 35. Original Script http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/type0333.html Little Red Riding hood script Once upon a time there lived in a certain village a little country girl, the prettiest creature who was ever seen. Her mother was excessively fond of her; and her grandmother doted on her still more. This good woman had a little red riding hood made for her. It suited the girl so extremely well that everybody called her Little Red Riding Hood. One day her mother, having made some cakes, said to her, "Go, my dear, and see how your grandmother is doing, for I hear she has been very ill. Take her a cake, and this little pot of butter." Little Red Riding Hood set out immediately to go to her grandmother, who lived in another village. As she was going through the wood, she met with a wolf, who had a very great mind to eat her up, but he dared not, because of some woodcutters working nearby in the forest. He asked her where she was going. The poor child, who did not know that it was dangerous to stay and talk to a wolf, said to him, "I am going to see my grandmother and carry her a cake and a little pot of butter from my mother." "Does she live far off?" said the wolf "Oh I say," answered Little Red Riding Hood; "it is beyond that mill you see there, at the first house in the village." "Well," said the wolf, "and I'll go and see her too. I'll go this way and go you that, and we shall see who will be there first." The wolf ran as fast as he could, taking the shortest path, and the little girl took a roundabout way, entertaining herself by gathering nuts, running after butterflies, and gathering bouquets of little flowers. It was not long before the wolf arrived at the old woman's house. He knocked at the door: tap, tap. "Who's there?" "Your grandchild, Little Red Riding Hood," replied the wolf, counterfeiting her voice; "who has brought you a cake and a little pot of butter sent you by mother." The good grandmother, who was in bed, because she was somewhat ill, cried out, "Pull the bobbin, and the latch will go up." The wolf pulled the bobbin, and the door opened, and then he immediately fell upon the good woman and ate her up in a moment, for it been more than three days since he had eaten. He then shut the door and got into the grandmother's bed, expecting Little Red Riding Hood, who came some time afterwards and knocked at the door: tap, tap. "Who's there?”
  • 36. Original Script http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/type0333.html Little Red Riding Hood, hearing the big voice of the wolf, was at first afraid; but believing her grandmother had a cold and was hoarse, answered, "It is your grandchild Little Red Riding Hood, who has brought you a cake and a little pot of butter mother sends you." The wolf cried out to her, softening his voice as much as he could, "Pull the bobbin, and the latch will go up." Little Red Riding Hood pulled the bobbin, and the door opened. The wolf, seeing her come in, said to her, hiding himself under the bedclothes, "Put the cake and the little pot of butter upon the stool, and come get into bed with me." Little Red Riding Hood took off her clothes and got into bed. She was greatly amazed to see how her grandmother looked in her nightclothes, and said to her, "Grandmother, what big arms you have!" "All the better to hug you with, my dear." "Grandmother, what big legs you have!" "All the better to run with, my child." "Grandmother, what big ears you have!" "All the better to hear with, my child." "Grandmother, what big eyes you have!" "All the better to see with, my child." "Grandmother, what big teeth you have got!" "All the better to eat you up with." And, saying these words, this wicked wolf fell upon Little Red Riding Hood, and ate her all up.

Little Brown Wolf wanted to surprise Barky with a cake that he had made especially for her. Little Brown Wolf skipped his way through the woods, until eventually he was faced with an obstacle. A tree had fallen over the river’s bridge; the bridge was Little Brown Wolf’s only way of getting to Barky’s cottage. “Bang!” A huge bang and a large flash appeared in front of Little Brown Wolf, he closed his eyes until he could see again. When he opened them, the tree which was blocking the bridge had vanished. Without a thought or a worry, Little Brown Wolf continued his journey. Barky was sat in her chair, in a deep sleep. Until, “bang!” A huge bang and a large flash woke Barky from her sleep, but her eyes stayed shut as the flash was too bright. Once her eyes were able to open, she saw a tall lady in a black cloak looking down on her. “I am The Wicked Witch Of The Woods.” said the witch in her most evil voice. Barky sat in her chair shocked and unable to move. “Scared of humans is Little Brown Wolf?” laughed the witch. With a flick of her wand she cast a spell onto Barky, which transformed her into a human child. Barky looked down at her furry paws, instead to find the human hands of a child. The Witch disappeared before Barky was able to look up and ask to be returned back to her wolf body. There was a gentle knock at the door of the cottage. The digital flat plans are helpful as they give me an idea of what the final piece will look like, however if I don’t like the look of it, I can quickly create another flat plan to see if a different technique works better. The digital flat plans also allow me to create a mock up of the whole book. This gives me an impression of how long the book will actually be and if I feel it is necessary to make any changes to the length of the book.
