The document discusses the evaluation of different digital graphic narrative development tasks completed by a student named Kelly Steer using Adobe Photoshop. It includes evaluations of tasks involving using shapes, rotocoping, text manipulation, and comic book styles. For the shape task, the student created a simple panda character using shapes and liked its simplicity. For rotocoping, the student traced an elephant photo and was happy with creating a more detailed animal. The text tasks involved manipulating text styles and adding images. The comic book images used effects like threshold and layer styles to achieve comic-like styles.
3. Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
To achieve this image I used Adobe Photoshop, using the shapes to create my animal and the warp tool to
create a more realistic shape, I used an image I found online as a template. I liked this technique as it was
simple and straight forward, and is a quicker way to create a character. I like the simplicity of the animal, and
think this technique would be good to use in contexts such as children's books, as the animal is simple but still
recognisable, and is good to illustrate things such as animals and people within storylines. I used lighter and
darker shapes within my image to create more depth, and a more realistic image, for example I used a whiter
shape within the pandas eyes to create a the natural look of light reflecting from the pandas eyes, and I used a
grey shape underneath the eyes to create depth of the eyes and make the blacks of the eyes stand out more
against the dark spots around the pandas eyes. Overall I am happy with the outcome of my shape animal task,
as I feel it is easily recognisable as the animal I was trying to portray, and is a simple, and quirky way to create
an character.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to this again I would use a more difficult animal so I could practice more and expand my skills. I would
also add more details to the animal, and add a background to create a fuller picture. I feel like a background
could help tell a story and help the reader or viewer recognise the animal, and would add more colour to the
image.
5. Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
To achieve this image I used Adobe Photoshop and the polygonal lasso tool to go around sections of an image
of an elephant I found on the internet, to create my animal. I used lighter and darker shades to create shadow
and a give the animal a more realistic feel, using the original image as reference. I like this technique as it
allows me to add more detail to the animal, whereas the shape task only allowed me to use certain shapes, this
allowed me to create a more realistic animal and outline, and it also allowed me to create a more difficult
animal which has more defined shapes and outline which I may struggle to achieve with just shapes. Overall I
am happy with my animal, as I feel like I have achieved what I set out to do, and my elephant is recognisable to
a viewer, and I feel like I have added depth by using shadows, creating a more realistic image. I feel like this
technique would be used in contexts such as children's book or to illustrate a story or comic, as it is simple, but
has depth.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to do this again I would add a background to give a better overall look and finish to the image, and this
would also add more depth and colour to the image. If I had more time I would also add a lot more details,
shadows and depth, to create a more detailed and realistic image. I would also like to practise using this
technique on images of people, to expand on my knowledge and skills.
7. Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I liked how I can put an image behind text to add a unique texture, I feel like this could be useful to
demonstrate a word, or to put emphasis on text to make it stand out more and add a unique twist to the
overall feel. The tracking and leading within my first images, helps change the spacing of the letters and words,
I feel like this is useful to create a more defined word, and can be adapted for different text purposes. For
example my second text has more space between the letters, making the words easier to read, this will be
useful for contexts such as children's books, as the letters are more defined making it easier and simpler for the
child to read.
The last three texts where I have transformed the text and distorted it in different ways to create different
perspectives could be useful when creating a more dynamic text or image, or when adding text to a
photograph where a normal flat text would stand out against the background image, distorting this text could
help blend the text into the image.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to do this again I would use different fonts to create a more dramatic change with the tracking and
leading differences, I would use a more bulkier text font when changing the layer styles so that the styles are
more defined. I would also use a few different images with my text to create different looks, for example
instead of pizza, I could use an image of a band, place or hobby.
8. Text Based
I used all the techniques I learnt in the previous slide to create this lyric imagery, I added an image of the
band behind the word ‘completely’ to represent who the song was sang by, and I feel like this adds a unique
twist to the overall look. I used different fonts to create an interesting and dynamic feel to the overall look,
using tracking and leading to create the look that I desired. I used the tool ‘warp’ to distort the word ‘cry’ to
look like a tear, using the layer styles to change the colour and opacity of the letters.

What did you like about your image?
To achieve these comic book style images I used Adobe Photoshop, using tools such as
‘Threshold’, layer effects such as ‘multiply’ and ‘overlay’, and the filter effect ‘Cut out’. I like the
overall feel of the finish look of these images, where the degree of the ‘comic’ look can be altered
from realistic to artistic. I used a black and white theme with my images as I felt this gave the
images a more defined and aesthetically pleasing finish. I like how the features of the subjects
become more defined in an abstract way, using shadows and light to create this depth. The last of
my three images is my favourite, as I feel this is the effect that I most desired to achieve, having
had practised with my first two images, I feel this helped me gain the knowledge and skill in
achieving the best ‘comic book’ effect within my images.
