Element Fleet has the largest benchmark database in our industry and we needed a robust and linearly scalable platform to turn this data into actionable insights for our customers. The platform needed to support advanced analytics, streaming data sets, and traditional business intelligence use cases. In this presentation, we will discuss how we built a single, unified platform for both Advanced Analytics and traditional Business Intelligence using Cassandra on DSE. With Cassandra as our foundation, we are able to plug in the appropriate technology to meet varied use cases. The platform we’ve built supports real-time streaming (Spark Streaming/Kafka), batch and streaming analytics (PySpark, Spark Streaming), and traditional BI/data warehousing (C*/FiloDB). Cassandra is moving away from Thrift to CQL protocol. Along with this change, Thrift based client drivers are not actively supported any more, nor are they exposed to new Cassandra features. At Choice Hotels International, we are in the midst of a multi-year effort to replace our 25 year old monolithic reservation system with a cloud-based, microservice-style architecture using Cassandra. Monte Zweben Co-Founder and CEO of Splice Machine, will discuss how to use HBase co-processors to build an ANSI-99 SQL database with 1) parallelization of SQL execution plans, 2) ACID transactions with snapshot isolation and 3) consistent secondary indexing. Transactions are critical in traditional RDBMSs because they ensure reliable updates across multiple rows and tables. Most operational applications require transactions, but even analytics systems use transactions to reliably update secondary indexes after a record insert or update. In the Hadoop ecosystem, HBase is a key-value store with real-time updates, but it does not have multi-row, multi-table transactions, secondary indexes or a robust query language like SQL. Combining SQL with a full transactional model over HBase opens a whole new set of OLTP and OLAP use cases for Hadoop that was traditionally reserved for RDBMSs like MySQL or Oracle. However, a transactional HBase system has the advantage of scaling out with commodity servers, leading to a 5x-10x cost savings over traditional databases like MySQL or Oracle. HBase co-processors, introduced in release 0.92, provide a flexible and high-performance framework to extend HBase. In this talk, we show how we used HBase co-processors to support a full ANSI SQL RDBMS without modifying the core HBase source. We will discuss how endpoint transactions are used to serialize SQL execution plans over to regions so that computation is local to where the data is stored. Additionally, we will show how observer co-processors simultaneously support both transactions and secondary indexing. The talk will also discuss how Splice Machine extended the work of Google Percolator, Yahoo Labs’ OMID, and the University of Waterloo on distributed snapshot isolation for transactions. Lastly, performance benchmarks will be provided, including full TPC-C and TPC-H results that show how Hadoop/HBase can be a replacement of traditional RDBMS solutions.

Scylla is a new, open-source NoSQL data store with a novel design optimized for modern hardware, capable of 1.8 million requests per second per node, while providing Apache Cassandra compatibility and scaling properties. While conventional NoSQL databases suffer from latency hiccups, expensive locking, and low throughput due to low processor utilization, the Scylla design is based on a modern shared-nothing approach. Scylla runs multiple engines, one per core, each with its own memory, CPU and multi-queue NIC. The result is a NoSQL database that delivers an order of magnitude more performance, with less performance tuning needed from the administrator. With extra performance to work with, NoSQL projects can have more flexibility to focus on other concerns, such as functionality and time to market. While it is possible to vertically scale Postgres, and to scale read-only workloads across multiple servers, only sharding allows multi-server read-write scaling. This presentation will cover the advantages of sharding and future Postgres sharding implementation requirements, including foreign data wrapper enhancements, parallelism, and global snapshot and transaction control. HTrace is a new Apache incubator project which makes it much easier to diagnose and detect performance problems in HBase. It provides a unified view of the performance of requests, following them from their origin in the HBase client, through the HBase region servers, and finally into HDFS. System administrators can use a central web interface to query and view aggregate performance information for the whole cluster. This talk will cover the motivations for creating HTrace, its design, and some examples of how HTrace can help diagnose real-world HBase problems.

Customizing JVM settings for the needs of an application can be a tricky business, especially when running externally developed software such as Cassandra. In this talk I will share our experiences and the procedure that we have used to test and validate changes with Java tuning. We'll explore with two recent experiences: changes and monitoring of G1 garbage collection, and moving buffer objects off the heap. For the talk, I'll discuss our tuning process at Knewton. I will share some of the challenges that we faced while identifying what we expected to learn. I'll discuss how we isolated and minimized variables across tests, the importance of the duration of these tests, and how we try to separate correlation from causation. I will demonstrate how to use and interpret the results of the custom scripts that we were driven to develop to gain visibility into our G1GC processes; these scripts will be open sourced. About the Speaker Carlos Monroy Senior Software Engineer, Knewton Carlos Monroy is a senior engineer on the database team at Knewton, an education company that created an adaptive learning platform. Carlos has been developing software professionally since 1998. His experience holding multiple roles on the software lifecycle provides him a wholistic approach. Having used over a half dozen relational database engines, he has recently come over to the NoSQL side, first working with HBase and for the last three years Cassandra.

Combining the power of Cassandra with APIs of existing Time Series tools, such as Graphite can yield interesting results. Cyanite is a Time Series aggregator and store built on top of Cassandra. It's fully compatible with Graphite, can serve as a plug-in replacement for Graphite and Graphite web. Cyanite is using SASI indexes to make glob metric path queries, can query and aggregate, store, display and analyse metrics from hundreds and thousands of servers. Sadly, very few people are aware of what a graph is or how to appropriately use it. If I've just described you, don't panic! In this talk, I'll bring everyone up to speed on the basics of what a graph is all about. The term graph holds a foundation in some pretty hardcore computer science. This lends itself to some complexity, but there's hope! We can leverage these roots in a less complicated manner by using GraphFrames and Spark to extract maximum analytical awesomeness from our existing Cassandra data. The task of a data modeler is to create order out of chaos without excessively distorting the truth. The finished product should be data model that describes the structure, manipulation and integrity aspects of the data to be stored. To properly create a data model, the modeler will transform said chaos through three distinct stages. The first is a Conceptual Data Model, then a Logical Data Model, and lastly, a Physical Data Model. This presentation will cover all three stages. It will also walk through the creation of a full blown data model for a service scheduling application to be built with a Cassandra backend. This presentation is based on a 3 part blog series I wrote for DataScale. About the Speaker Adam Hutson Data Architect, DataScale Adam is Data Architect for DataScale, Inc. He is a seasoned data professional with experience designing & developing large-scale, high-volume database systems. Adam previously spent four years as Senior Data Engineer for Expedia building a distributed Hotel Search using Cassandra 1.1 in AWS. Many use cases where Cassandra is natural fit require latency tuning in order to serve requests really fast. DataStax driver has many options, some less familiar, which can greatly influence performance aspect. This talk will focus on Java applications and options at your disposal in DataStax Java driver which became standard when you want to use this database. We will concentrate on both monitoring and tuning aspect of things and we will provide different options for different use cases. Talk Synopsis: We have all introduced more or less functional programming and asynchronous operations into our applications in order to speed up and distribute treatments (e.g., multi-threading, future, completableFuture, etc.). To build truly non-blocking components, optimize resource usage, and avoid "callback hell" you have to think reactive—everything is an event. From the frontend UI to database communications, it’s now possible to develop Java applications as fully reactive with frameworks like Spring WebFlux and Reactor. With high throughput and tunable consistency, applications built on top of Apache Cassandra™ fit perfectly within this pattern. DataStax has been developing Apache Cassandra drivers for years, and in the latest version of the enterprise driver we introduced reactive programming. First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User Endpoints

In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.
