This document summarizes a study of a storm water detention basin to determine the effects of de-icing salts on the soil properties. Soil samples were taken on a grid across the basin and analyzed for electrical conductivity, infiltration rate, salinity, soil texture, and chemistry. The results showed that electrical conductivity and clay content were highest in the center and north of the basin, while infiltration rates were faster on the sloping sides. Calcium levels were lowest in the center of the basin where electrical conductivity was highest. The results indicate that de-icing salts are affecting some soil properties in the detention basin.
