The document discusses several studies that tested the effectiveness of different labeling interventions on increasing the percentage of cold water washing machine loads. The studies found that adding functional, environmental, or energy saving prompts to existing labels had the greatest impact on cold water wash selection, increasing those loads by 30-40% compared to controls. Combining multiple labeling strategies, like functional labels with additional prompts, led to the highest rates of more sustainable washing behaviors.
Short talk on my work developing novel tagging methods in Pinto abalone at the National Shellfisheries Association Annual Meeting this year (March 2012) in Seattle.
Mobile devices are with us all the time so it's natural that they have an impact on our behaviors. Hugh Jedwill uses his marketing background from P&G to provide an understanding of the depth of this impact. He also provides guidance on how to design given these mobile behaviors.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.
Transforming Brand Perception and Boosting Profitabilityaaryangarg12
In today's digital era, the dynamics of brand perception, consumer behavior, and profitability have been profoundly reshaped by the synergy of branding, social media, and website design. This research paper investigates the transformative power of these elements in influencing how individuals perceive brands and products and how this transformation can be harnessed to drive sales and profitability for businesses.
Through an exploration of brand psychology and consumer behavior, this study sheds light on the intricate ways in which effective branding strategies, strategic social media engagement, and user-centric website design contribute to altering consumers' perceptions. We delve into the principles that underlie successful brand transformations, examining how visual identity, messaging, and storytelling can captivate and resonate with target audiences.
Methodologically, this research employs a comprehensive approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. Real-world case studies illustrate the impact of branding, social media campaigns, and website redesigns on consumer perception, sales figures, and profitability. We assess the various metrics, including brand awareness, customer engagement, conversion rates, and revenue growth, to measure the effectiveness of these strategies.
The results underscore the pivotal role of cohesive branding, social media influence, and website usability in shaping positive brand perceptions, influencing consumer decisions, and ultimately bolstering sales and profitability. This paper provides actionable insights and strategic recommendations for businesses seeking to leverage branding, social media, and website design as potent tools to enhance their market position and financial success.

Thank you Industrialization. Thank you steel mill! Thank you power station! And thank you chemical processing industry which gave us time to read books!
70-90 % of the energy used in washing clothes is in heating the water. Irrespective of any engineering improvements to the machines, 70-90% of the remaining energy use is dependent on user choices, and that’s where behavior design comes in. Obviously this isn’t limited to washing machines, much of the energy used by products is directly related to user behavior.Had all 4000 loads in Experiment I been run on cold, NYU would have saved about $6 in natural gas.
The Fogg Behavior Model forms the basis for this study. For an action to occur, the individual must be able to perform the action, sufficiently motivated, and triggered to act. The theory underlying my study is that high-proximity information is more likely to be effective in changing behavior as it reduces the distance between the information and action.
The Maytag Commercial washing machines used at NYU have the cycle selection buttons labeled with the suggested use, rather than water temperature. Users may be frustrated by not knowing what settings each button corresponds to, or their desire to use a cold water wash to reduce energy use may be overridden by “I have whites, I should push the whites button”
The signs included three messages: an informational environmental message about the energy use in washing clothes, a functional message to tell users which buttons to press, an economic appeal regarding clothing life, and in two of the four experimental conditions, the authority appeal.A reassurance that washing clothes in cold water gets them adequately clean was not included.
Experiment I manipulated two variables: proximity and perceived authority. Proximity was tested by placing a prompt on a label on the control panel, or on a wall sign visible from the washing machines. Authority was manipulated by including the Hercules logo on the signs or leaving it out—Hercules being the owner of the washing machines, a contractor to NYU.There may be an issue of perceived authority with the signs-it may be assumed that the high proximity signs have high implicit authority as a result of being on the machine-and they don’t look like they are from a grubby grad student (or snapple bottle top-like the confound signs)
Experiment II, deployed in late November and running through the end of the semester, will test whether labeling the energy saving settings or providing information on water temperature, in addition to the factory labels which are labeled by load contents. In the attempt to simplify the user interface, the designers reduced flexibility – labeling the buttons by recommended water temperature and spin speed.Hercules wouldn’t let me replace the recommended Ideally I would have relabeled the buttons, but Hercules wouldn’t let me do that so I had to use less than ideal labeling (add-on)
There are several issues which this study did not address or could not addressMany people have misgivings of how well their laundry would be cleaned in cold water, which has been a major impetus for cold-water detergent formulasMany students also do multiple loads at a time, often separated into colors and whites, which could be run at different temperaturesAs a result, of running multiple loads at one time, or repeat visits to the laundry room during the multi-week study, independence (assumed for Pearson’s chi-squared test) is not satisfiedOther influences may contaminate the sample of students, such as other signs in the environment (Consolidated Edison, the New York utility) ran a campaign urging the use of cold water for laundry, and it is possible that students visited other buildings and saw different conditions in their laundry rooms (although this is a remote possibility)
