Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Previous tagging methods in abalone generally fall into two categories: tags adhered to the shell with adhesives or attached through respiratory pores. This photo illustrates the placement of bee tags on juvenile abalone.
This photo illustrates placement of a washer attached through the respiratory pores. Both of these tagging methods have been employed as part of the Pinto Abalone Restoration Project.
These tagging methods are unsatisfactory for a variety of reasons, including tag loss, encrustation of the shell by epibionts, shell erosion and the difficulty of divers to visualize tags while underwater and when abalone are cryptic as they often are
Despite the fact that shelled gastropods can be tagged with limited invasiveness, a universal and validated tagging technique is lacking. A successful tagging method must have high retention rates, low to no impact on the animal including growth and tags must be detectable under field conditions
For this study, we used Passive Integrated Transponder tags, also known as PITs,to tag abalone. PITs are small, biocompatible glass-encapsulated integrated circuits. PITs are activated by a tag reader to relay a unique identifier number sequence. PITs could be a viable alternative to traditional tagging methods because each animal has a unique number sequence and tags can be read without being visualized, which is ideal for surveys by managers. Ideally, PITs would be readable behind substrate and in aggregates. We are currently exploring these questions.
We completed three trials in our experiment. All animals were tagged with 9mm biomark PIT tags and tags were secured with cyanoacrylate glue. Late juveniles were tagged in trial one, and juveniles were tagged in trial 2, and broodstockabalone were tagged in trial 3. Growth, survival and tag retention were tracked during the experiment. We are currently developing a fully submersible PIT tag reader. For this experiment, we used a Biomarkhandheld reader.
In trial 1, late juveniles ranging from 40.1 to 75.5 mm with an average shell length of 60 mm, were tagged with one of three methods. Prior to PIT tagging, abalone were tagged with bee tags at the apex of the shell. 10 animals were tagged in the outside of the shell, in the groove formed by the respiratory pores. 10 animals were tagged inside the shell, under the mantle tissue. 10 animals were tagged by injection of a PIT tag into the foot muscle using a 12 gauge needle. 10 animals were left as controls. The arrow in each photo illustrates tag placement.
Juvenile abalone, ranging from 17.5 to 32.1 mm with an average size of 20mm , were first bee tagged on the shell apex. 22 abalone were tagged on the inside of the shell, after the mantle tissue had been gently lifted. 20 animals were left as controls.
33 broodstock abalone were also tagged on the inside of the shell under the mantle tissue.
We hypothesized that there would be low survival and growth in the injected treatment due to the fact that abalone are hemophiliacs. We also hypothesized that abalone tagged inside the shell would deposit nacre over the PIT tag, as in pearl formation, and that nacre development would increase tag retention.
This graph illustrates the results of late juvenile tagging in trial 1. The y axis shows percent tag loss and percent mortality. The X axis shows the tagging method.
This graph illustrates that animalsin the injected treatment had the highest mortality. However, the percent mortality was not significantly higher than the other treatments.
This graph illustrates that injected individuals had a significantly higher percent tag loss than other treatment groups. 9 out of 10 injected animals rejected their tag, and only 1 animal retained its tag, and later died.
During trial 1 (late juveniles), we observed nacre deposition over PIT tags in abalone tagged inside the shell. Nacre deposition was first observed 37 days after tagging. The arrow illustrates tag placement, and subsequent nacre deposition.
In the injected treatment in trial 1, we observed one animal with a large lesion protruding from the injection site. The arrow illustrates healthy tissue coloration, and the red circle surrounds the injection site. The white tissue surrounding the injection site is unhealthy tissue.
This graph shows the net growth in millimeters, of juveniles in trial 2. The y axis shows growth in mm, and the x axis shows the treatment group.
This graph illustrates that control juveniles who were not tagged with a PIT tag had significantly higher net growth than tagged juveniles.
This graph shows the percent tag retention in each age group for tags attached inside.
Broodstock had a 96% retention rate over 168 days. Late juveniles had a 90% tag retention rate over 252 days, and juveniles had a 91% tag retention rate over 84 days.
In summary, in trial 1, abalone tagged inside had the highest survival rate, but there was no significant difference in survival among age groups.
Abalone tagged inside had the highest tag retention rate. There was no significant difference in tag retention among different age groups.
There was no significant difference in growth between tagged an untagged late juveniles in trial 1. However, tagged juveniles in trial 2 had significantly lower growth.
In conclusion, PITs may be a viable tagging method for adult and late juvenile abalone, but there may be a size minimum as evidenced by the decreased growth in tagged juveniles in trial 2. PITs could also have uses in other shelled gastropods and possibly shellfish.
In the future, we hope to finish the development of the underwater PIT tag reader, and test it in the field. We also hope to continue exploring new tagging methods, such as the 8.4mm Biomark tags or the 6mm Nonatec tags.
We are currently developing a fully submersible PIT tag reader, in which the reader board and reader will be fully encased. We are testing a few designs, including a wand and sweeper construction. We will be testing read range, readability in aggregates and under substrate of PITs in the field.
