DESIGN OF THE STUDY
4.1 INTRODUCTION
This chapter describes the methodology and research design of the study. The methodology
describes the broad scheme or plan of the research and elaborates the tools of analysis. A
methodology or a research design refers to approaches and research strategies, e.g. surveys;
questionnaires etc. In a broader context methodology refers to a design whereby, the researcher
selects data and analysis procedures to investigate a specific research problem (Cohen, Manion and
Morrison; 2008). Research designs have been classified differently by different scholars. Some
scholars (Bodgan& Biklen, 1982) discuss research methods under two broad headings: qualitative
and quantitative. Gay (1987) indicates that while naturalistic researcher prefer qualitative methods,
such as participant observation and in depth interviewing, rationalistic researchers tend to use
quantitative methodologies such as random selection of subjects and administration of standardized
instruments. While qualitative studies focus on subjective information, such as feelings, experiences
or opinions: data that cannot be scientifically quantified. Quantitative research is the opposite,
shunning subjectivity in favor of objectivity. Quantitative research focuses on statistics and
quantifiable information.

The first is the fifty five multiple choice timed section must be completed in fifty five minutes and
the second is the short answer questions (SAQ) students must complete four questions but one will
not be graded. Each element of the writing section is a vital component that will allow students to
demonstrate their ability to apply the historical thinking skills to a specific world history standard
within a specific time period. The structure of the SAQ short answer question I agree with as it
requires students to demonstrate specific identification and analysis, however the aspect that I do not
agree with is the simple fact that students are required to complete four out of four of the questions
but only three will be graded. This brings me to my point of grading and pacing of the exam,
particularly the stimulus based multiple–choice questions and the SAQ. If students are required to

degree and pass the CPA exam in order to have my license to practice. As noted in Appendix 1, I

Graduate Descriptor: 5.1.1 – Demonstrate understanding of assessment strategies, including
informal and formal, diagnostic, formative and summative approaches to assess student learning.
On my Google site, I have provided a summative Year 8 Examination for the topic Views and
Perspectives. This examination demonstrates my understanding of the Graduate Descriptor 5.1.1.
The task for EDFD307: Educational Assessment was to design an end of topic or mid–year
examination to assess my students' achievement of the syllabus outcomes in the unit of work, which
was (Stage 4, Year 8) View and Perspectives. The examination needed to draw upon students' work
and experience during the unit. It needed to be based on an assessment plan (a table of
specifications) that clearly demonstrated how the questions, syllabus outcomes and the major
components of the unit were integrated.
The examination was a 60 minutes test with 10 minutes reading time. The first section of the
examination was a creative writing essay and 40 minutes was allocated to complete it. The second
section, which consisted of 11 multiples choice questions, was allocated 20 minutes for completion.

Often heavily debated on, specifically in an educational setting, is the technique and style in which
students are tested. Whether it be multiple choice, true or false, or short answer responses, test takers
may respond differently due to certain correlations between the way they are tested, and the way
they learn and take tests in general. Using different types of questions for tests has each of their own
benefits, as well as drawbacks. Test format, in addition to a student's age, major and mood, can lead
to inaccurate test results which may correlate with improper test formatting. Multiple choice
responses provide the student with several relatable choices, one being correct. Students then have a
25% chance of selecting the right response, along with the ability to narrow down the answers.
Providing the answer and other comparably subjected answers presented with the question may
stimulate the individual's memory as well. In terms of short answer responses, the individual is
forced to recall all components of the experiment. Conversely, in true/false responses, students have
a 50% chance of getting the answer correct and are able to make a more precise decision. We predict

My greatest strength in writing multiple choice, binary choice, and matching questions is creating
scenarios for the multiple–choice. I enjoyed writing these scenarios by making up stories that are
related to the content. I was also good at keeping track of what we have and what we needed to do.
Another strength I had was in creating binary choice question because there is only one right
answer.
My greatest weakness was coming up with good alternate choices for the multiple–choice. I had a
hard time with this because the ones that I came up with were either too obvious, not homogeneous,
or too similar. Another weakness I had was creating matching because I found it hard to make them
all homogeneous. They were also hard to make because we had to come up with different responses
that were similar in order for the premises not to stand out.

many of multiple choice questions this was because I enjoyed writing the scenarios. I also wrote
some of the binary questions. I also contributed to the group by helping and collaborating on the

the Absurd. At first, I thought this was a very unique way of analyzing something as it questions the
things that we just accept to be true in life, but I can definitely see where these authors were coming
from and why they started to think about literary works in this completely different fashion, as they
wondered if anything in our lives actually had meaning. With all this information to lead to more

The Importance Of My Writing
To graduate from high school in New York, it's a requirement for students to pass the english regent.
I was scheduled to take mine in the middle of my junior year and I felt a lot of pressure. When it
came to all of my english classes I hardly ever got a high average in the class. It wasn't that I was
bad at the subject or anything, it was just that I would score low on the assignments that counted the
most. I would always get the same critique on my writing which was the fact I didn't organize my
writing properly and that I didn't strike all the key features. Another factor that played into my low
scores was the fact I never practiced my writing and took my assignments serious.
Coming into my junior year I knew I had to improve my writing by improving my writing
techniques. My english teacher that year was Mr. Rivera, and his main focus for my class that year
was to improve our writing. He gave us many assignments throughout the year that challenged
students to actually brainstorm and use literary devices. The purpose of these devices such as
metaphors, personification, and allusion are to give the reader a better understanding of what their
reading and have a picture of what their reading in their head. To get a better understanding of these
devices, he assigned us assignments where we had to read a text and identify the devices used.

Classroom Reflection Paper
With all of this in mind, you as the educator are able to understand your classroom and structure it in
a way that it is beneficial to all students. Most of the time in my clinical setting the students are
arranged in a strict manor. They must face towards the front of the classroom at all times. Even
when it is time to partner up for activities they are extremely limited on how they can form groups.
When structuring my classroom, I want to create an environment that is open to discussion. To keep
students from feeling left out and to keep students from simply not wanting to participate, I plan on
structuring the classroom in a circle instead of rows. This gives everyone an equal chance to voice
their opinion and start a discussion. Instructional methods in my CT's classroom vary depending on
what is being taught on that specific day. One main issue I have noticed is his lack of review. It
seems as if my CT just jumps into lessons without reviewing what was discussed the day before.
With saying this, he provides adequate details on how to do the assignment, but he does not really
relate yesterday's topic to today's topic. I mentioned doing a vocabulary review at the start of my
lesson to recall previous memories before discussing the topic I am assigned to teach, but he did not
seem too keen on that idea for some reason. He said that the student would have already covered
that information. I think it partly has to do with the limited time that we are given, but it is still
important to recall and relate topics even if they were already discussed. According to my CT every
assignment is an assessment. Throughout the year both formative and summative assessments are
conducted in his classroom. The formative assessments my CT carries out usually are pretty
informative, but also makes the students use their critical thinking. Many of the formative
assessments are done with partners and allows the students to be creative. The summative
assessments on the other hand are pretty bland. The majority of the summative assessments are

English Figurative Language Summative Assessment Essay
This task is focused on the assessment components of two ELL students, Vicente Flores, and
Mingyu Wong. Vicente Flores is one grade level below his current grade. He does have a learning
plan which consists of a shortened test, oral answers, and using manipulatives, just to name a few.
Mingyu Wong has a shortened IEP which states she requires practice emphasizing critical
information, using graphic organizers, and pre–teaching vocabulary. She is also one grade level

The objectives are that students will distinguish between literal and figurative language. The
students will also need to create examples of figurative language. Next, students need to identify
seven types of figurative language. The objective assessment showed that eighteen students passed,
and twelve students failed. Of those students who failed, two students were above grade level,
eleven students are at grade level, and five students were below level. As you can see, this data is far
from 80% passing. The average of the objective score was 74%. The range of the objective score
was 50. As you can see, the students didn't perform so well in this lesson.
The outliers on this assessment were that not all objectives were met in the lesson, or the
assessment. An objective was left out of the lesson but not in the objective section. Time was also a
major factor of this lesson. The lesson was jam packed with great curriculum, but it was too much

Standardized testing is a crucial part of today's federal education structure; one that is both highly
supported and criticized at all levels. The main point of this roundtable, and the chosen excerpts
from the authors on the subject, is to discern and debate both the necessity of and the role that
multiple choice testing plays in teaching history. This subject is relevant to us as history teachers
because it opens up the floor for discussions about the need to either continue, reform, or completely
scrap multiple choice testing from the history standard of secondary education in today's society.
The discussions for this roundtable are stationed around six excerpts from different history
education scholars. The centerpiece of this discussion, at least from my interpretation, is a piece
from a retired history department head of Princeton University named Theodore K. Rabb. The
excerpt of his writing details a more negative critique of multiple choice testing from the history
aspect of public education. Rabb explains that the 'teach to the test' mentality of multiple choice
examinations is an inherent failure; due to the fact that there are so many different aspects of history
to teach. He states that teachers should be able to teach students on the different historical aspects
that interest them as educators, while still following a core structured timeline, instead of having to
