Begin with the end in mind
Set Goals
Define your mission and goals in life.
Definition:
Beginning with the end in mind means knowing where you want to be in the
future; you can’t make a plan if you don’t know where you are going!
Where do you want to be?
Imagine you are on your deathbed, looking back on your life.
List five things that you would want to look back on with pride.
Now pick ONE of them and think about how to get there.
Work backwards; detail each step from the end to now.
This is what it means to begin with the end in mind!

to four weeks is all the time you need to
make a habit automatic. If you can make
it through the initial conditioning phase, it
becomes much easier to sustain. A
month is a good block of time to commit
to a change since it easily fits in your
calendar.

perspective on changing your habit.

yourself with the benefits of making a change.
Imagine getting better grades after improving
your organizational skills and study habits.

consequences. Reminding yourself about the downsides
of not making a change will give you added motivation.

Design a successful MS student

Editor's Notes

  1. You may want to take a few minutes to discuss what other problems face students who are disorganized
  2. Students will brainstorm in pairs or groups characteristics and habits of “successful” students. After students share back with the class they should have some of the following characteristics: organized, have correct supplies, doesn’t forget things, finishes homework
  3. If you don’t know where you are going, you won’t get there
  4. Student will backward plan 1 goal they have – it might be a long term or short term goal. They will write the goal under “my goal” and then work backward and list at least 3 things they need to do to reach that goal
  5. Have students complete “Set your targets” work sheet
  6. Tech option – Kahoot game review Non tech option – Find it (You call out a place or item in the planner and first student to find it gets 1 point)
  7. Don’t get caught by surprise!

  9. On Elmo or sample planner – backwards map something you have to do. You can use a personal example or the example provided. Add your goals to your planner/calendar Add a few important meeting dates to planner/calendar Then together put important school dates/ vacations, etc into planner Then have students put family birthdays, events they know about, practices, etc. into their own planner
