Presentation to students in GSU 1120 Methods of Learning, a class for students on academic probation, about changing your mindest and achieving self-growth.
2. SMALL ACTIONS, BIG IMPACTS
• Habit- A settled tendency or usual manner of behavior
• Our habits are what dictate our routine and day to day life
• Which habits in your life help you create success?
• Which habits hold you back?
3. OXFORD’S 8 BAD HABITS SUCCESSFUL
STUDENTS DON’T HAVE
1. Planning to work right up to
a deadline
2. Using caffeine to keep you
going and help solve all
problems
3. Pulling all-nighters to get
work done
4. Using social media while
studying
5. Doing homework in your
bedroom
6. Trying to ignore problems
rather than identifying
them
7. Leaving work behind in
the classroom
8. Stressing out when you
fail
4. BREAKING BAD
a. Join forces- Team up with someone
who is trying to overcome the same
habit as you, and you’ll be able to beat
it together.
b. Surround yourself with the right
people- It’s a lot easier to get pulled
down by the wrong people than it is
for you to pull them up yourself.
c. Visualize yourself succeeding- Don’t
make changing a habit something that
your just doing to try to do; envision
yourself actually making the change
and enjoying the positive benefits
because of it.
What can you do to get rid of
those old habits, so you can usher
in the new?
5. CREATING GOOD
• Intelligent people are in a continuous learning mode, and they are constantly
working for new and better ways to function.
• Be willing to take constructive criticism and acknowledge the fact that you don’t
know everything
• Make this a habit of mind- always look for growth and improvement
6. MAKING IT STICK
1. Make a specific action plan-
Good habits require planning, so
create small, actionable steps.
2. Anticipate challenges- Prepare
for potential problems and try
to formulate a response ahead
of time
3. Be consistent- Contrary to
popular belief, there is no set
timeline for the formation of a
new habit. Just stick with it until
it becomes second nature!
Now that you’ve gotten rid of the
bad habit, how do you
implement the new, good one?
7. APPLY THIS TO YOUR LIFE!
These steps are just a
template- you have to take
the actions necessary to
create your own success.
