Animal-based products, such as meat and milk, deliver primary nutritional components around the globe. To handle the rapidly growing population and to sustain global food production by keeping an account of the carbon emissions during this process is proving to be quite challenging. One of the potential alternative sources of proteins is edible insects with protein content ranged from 35% to 61%, lipids (13-33%) and contains significant amount of animal fiber in form of insoluble chitin. This study evaluated the performance of turkey poults fed indomie waste (IW) based-diet. A total of
one hundred and forty-four (144) local strain of turkey poults were allotted to four dietary treatments in which
indomie waste was used to replace maize at 0%, 33.33%, 66.67%, and 100% levels, representing treatments one
to four (T1- T4) respectively. Each treatment was replicated three times with 12 poults per replicate using the
Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The study lasted for eight weeks. The initial weights of the poults were
taken while the final weight record was taken at the end of the study. The feed intake record was taken daily and
computed as total feed consumed per bird at the end of the study while weight gain, feed conversion ratio and
feed cost were calculated. Three birds were randomly selected from each replicate for carcass and organ
evaluation and were expressed as percentages of the body weight. The result showed that the IW significantly
(p< 0.05) affected the average weight gain and improved feed conversion ratio. The cost of feed per kg
decreased with increasing levels of IW in the diet. Significant differences were not observed in the carcass and
organ except in the breast yield. The lowest cost of feed was obtained at 100% inclusion level. The reduction in
feed cost is an advantage to the farmer who desires low cost of production. It was evident that IW could be
incorporated into the diet of local strain of turkey poults up to 100% level without any deleterious effect on the
performance of the turkeys, however, the 66.67% replacement which led to higher final body weight and better
feed conversion is recommended.

This study investigated the effects of incorporating soybean milk residue at levels of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% in diets for growing rabbits. Results showed that nutrient digestibility and visceral organ weights were generally not significantly affected by dietary soybean milk residue levels up to 20%. Specifically, feed digestibility and nutrient utilization were not significantly different across treatments. While heart and kidney weights differed significantly, liver, spleen, and lung weights did not. It was concluded that soybean milk residue can be included in growing rabbit diets up to 20% without negatively impacting nutrient digestion or visceral organ development.

This presentation was held at AIDF's Asia Food Security Summit 2014 in Jakarta. It takes a look at edible insect farming from a food and nutrition security perspective and Veterinarians without Borders' (VWB) work on insects in Laos.
Farming of edible insects has big potential to ease the double burden of poverty and malnutrition. In many countries people love insects, and farmed insects are an excellent source of valuable protein, fats, and micro-nutrients. Insect farming is easy to learn, requires minimal time and money, and provides food for families. Insect farming has also significant advantages over the collection of wild insects in terms of improved availability, accessibility, and utilization of insects.
Environmentally sustainable, insects have a much better feed conversion and produce significantly less greenhouse gases than conventional livestock. Moreover, the sales of insects and insect products can provide additional income for poor people.
VWB has launched 2 cricket farming projects in Central Laos, involving a total of 36 households in two provinces, working mostly with women household members.
VWB's action-research approach involves the support of farmers to improve family diets, income, and also value-added foods such as cricket noodles. VWB is also studying the impact of cricket farming on child and maternal nutrition.

- Sixteen female and four male rabbits aged 18 weeks were fed one of four diets containing varying levels (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%) of dried bovine rumen digesta (DBRD) to evaluate its effect on reproductive performance.

This study investigated the potential of using honey bee slum gum meal (HBSM) to replace maize in diets for growing rabbits. Thirty rabbits were fed one of three diets: a control diet with no HBSM, or diets with 25% or 50% of maize replaced by HBSM. This study evaluated the performance of turkey poults fed indomie waste (IW) based-diet. A total of
one hundred and forty-four (144) local strain of turkey poults were allotted to four dietary treatments in which
indomie waste was used to replace maize at 0%, 33.33%, 66.67%, and 100% levels, representing treatments one
to four (T1- T4) respectively. Each treatment was replicated three times with 12 poults per replicate using the
Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The study lasted for eight weeks. The initial weights of the poults were
taken while the final weight record was taken at the end of the study. The feed intake record was taken daily and
computed as total feed consumed per bird at the end of the study while weight gain, feed conversion ratio and
feed cost were calculated. Three birds were randomly selected from each replicate for carcass and organ
evaluation and were expressed as percentages of the body weight. The result showed that the IW significantly
(p< 0.05) affected the average weight gain and improved feed conversion ratio. The cost of feed per kg
decreased with increasing levels of IW in the diet. Significant differences were not observed in the carcass and
organ except in the breast yield. The lowest cost of feed was obtained at 100% inclusion level. The reduction in
feed cost is an advantage to the farmer who desires low cost of production. It was evident that IW could be
incorporated into the diet of local strain of turkey poults up to 100% level without any deleterious effect on the
performance of the turkeys, however, the 66.67% replacement which led to higher final body weight and better
feed conversion is recommended.

This study investigated the effects of incorporating soybean milk residue at levels of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% in diets for growing rabbits. Results showed that nutrient digestibility and visceral organ weights were generally not significantly affected by dietary soybean milk residue levels up to 20%. Specifically, feed digestibility and nutrient utilization were not significantly different across treatments. While heart and kidney weights differed significantly, liver, spleen, and lung weights did not. It was concluded that soybean milk residue can be included in growing rabbit diets up to 20% without negatively impacting nutrient digestion or visceral organ development.

Farming of edible insects has big potential to ease the double burden of poverty and malnutrition. In many countries people love insects, and farmed insects are an excellent source of valuable protein, fats, and micro-nutrients. Insect farming is easy to learn, requires minimal time and money, and provides food for families. Insect farming has also significant advantages over the collection of wild insects in terms of improved availability, accessibility, and utilization of insects.
Environmentally sustainable, insects have a much better feed conversion and produce significantly less greenhouse gases than conventional livestock. Moreover, the sales of insects and insect products can provide additional income for poor people.
VWB has launched 2 cricket farming projects in Central Laos, involving a total of 36 households in two provinces, working mostly with women household members.
VWB's action-research approach involves the support of farmers to improve family diets, income, and also value-added foods such as cricket noodles. VWB is also studying the impact of cricket farming on child and maternal nutrition.

Replacing 25% of maize with HBSM did not significantly affect rabbit growth performance or nutrient digestibility. However, replacing 50% of maize with HBSM resulted in lower final weights, daily weight gains, and carcass weights compared to the other diets. This study evaluated the effects of varying levels of urea-treated and untreated cowpea husk on the performance of weaned rabbits. Sixteen weaned rabbits were randomly assigned to diets with 40% untreated cowpea husk (control), or 40%, 50%, and 60% urea-treated cowpea husk. Results showed daily feed intake, dry matter intake, and crude protein intake differed significantly between treatments. Daily weight gain did not differ significantly. Mortality was highest with 60% inclusion level. In conclusion, supplementing rabbit diet with 4% urea-treated cowpea husk at 40% inclusion is safe for rabbits if properly mixed, but further research is needed at higher inclusion levels

The general linear model protocol of S.A.S. 9.0. was used to analyze the collected data. Among the dietary groups significant changes (P<0.05) was found utilizing a Tukey test. Enzyme along with various energy sources have noteworthy (P<0.05) changes on every one of the parameters (final weight, daily weight gain, feed conversion ratio, water intake, water to feed ratio and feed cost per kilogram weight gain) except for death rate at the starter phase. Broilers that had sorghum based diet had the best performance at starter stage (final weight; 627 g, weight gain; 576.85 g, feed cost/kg gain; ^ 187.95 k). At the finisher stage, sorghum supplemented with enzyme had the best feed conversion ratio (1.96) and feed cost/kg gain; ^ 171.15 k. The optimal performance characteristics were recorded for sorghum based diets. problem, because it is not consumed by humans and causes pollution to be discarded directly into the environment. For that reason the
objective of this study was to evaluate the use of silage acid devil fish (SADF) in fattening beef cattle as a protein supplement. SADF is
defined as a product semi-liquid or pasty mixed with formic acid, which leads to a decrease in pH to near 4.0. Used 18 young bulls (Bos
taurus × Bos indicus) for 60 days with a starting weight of 278.9 ± 51.2 kg, housed in individual pens with food and water ad libitum
were randomly assigned to three treatments with different levels of inclusion SADF (0%, 12% and 18%). They were weighed to the
beginning of the experiment and later every 30 days, previous fasting of 24 hours. To determine the food consumption, weigh every day
the offered food and the surplus. There were no significant differences (P < 0.05) among treatments with different levels of inclusion of
SADF with respect to daily weight gain, with values of 952 ± 324, 927 ± 322 and 854 ± 307 g/day, respectively. The dry matter intake
(DMI) was 8.9, 9.3 and 7.7 kg/day to 0%, 12% and 18% of SADF, respectively. In the same values for feed conversion were 9.34, 10.03
and 9.01 kg DMI/kg of weigh live, and carcass yield of 60.6%, 60.3% and 58.5%, respectively. It is concluded that fish silage acid devil

In this study, nutritional profiles and growth performances of yellow mealworm, Tenebriomolitor larvae (TML) were assessed cultivated using common food wastes i.e. watermelon rinds, broilers’ eggshells and banana peels. Nutritional profiles and growth performance of TML were evaluated after 28-day feeding trial. Post-feeding proximate analysis showed significant increment of nutritional contents compared to the control groups; whereby TML demonstrated highest level of crude protein (43.38%±2.71), moisture (9.74%±0.23) and ash (4.40%±0.22) in the group treated with watermelon wastes. On the other hand, TML showed highest level of crude fibre (8.73%±0.05) when treated with broilers’ eggshells; and higher level of crude fat (40.13%±4.66) with banana wastes. Nitrogen-free extract (NFE) contents were also noticed higher in the group treated with banana wastes (4.46%±5.30). In terms of growth performance, TML administrated with watermelon wastes demonstrated superior in specific growth rate (2.50%±0.43) and feed conversion efficiency (0.10%±0.01). Interestingly, TML grown with banana wastes showed highest survival rate (97.5%) among all. - 2. • Started: Africa, • Reached: Pakistan, India, and has ultimately invaded Nepal. • It has added a new “food security” challenges to world • 22 districts of Nepal are affected till now
- 3. • Desert Locust Control (DLC) costs: $US 38 million per annum in Africa (Oxford 2002) • 2003-2005 : • Estimated $2.5 billion in crop damage (WB 2020). • Ethiopia: 356,286 metric tons of cereal loss (FAO 2020) • 80–100% crop losses across affected areas (Brader et al., 2006). Locust: feed future • Locust animal feed can be the part of DL control • A 60-70% increase in consumption of animal products is expected by 2050 (FAO 2011). • More than 900 thousand species of insect, more than 2000 species are edible (Pedigo & Rice, 2015). • Five insect: black soldier, house fly maggots, mealworm, locusts- grasshoppers- crickets, and silkworm meal commercially rearing for animal feed • Commercial farming of locusts in South East Asia. • Chemical control of grasshoppers and locusts has many undesirable side-effects on livestock health (Botha, 1974), human health (Houndekon and De Groote, 1998), predator communities (Balança and De Visscher, 1997).

Locust (सलह): animal feed meal ? • The meat from free-range grasshopper-fed broilers had lower cholesterol (Sun Tao et al., 2012a). • Higher antioxidative potential and longer storage life in poultry meal (Sun Tao et al., 2012b). • Feed conversion ratio: 95% (Oleg Krasilnikov 2015) Russia • One kg of insect biomass can be produced from on average 2 kg of feed biomass (Collavo et al., 2005). • A single swarm can contain up to 10 billion insects and weigh approximately 30,000 tons (DeFoliart, 1989; Ramos-Elorduy, 1997; van Huis et al., 2013).

Locust (सलह): Animal Feed Practices In Nigeria, Broilers (1-28 days) given desert locust meal (Schistocerca gregaria) as a substitute for fishmeal, replacing 50% fish meal protein with locust meal (1.7% in the diet), resulted in higher body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio (Adeyemo et al., 2008). In China, Meal from the grasshopper could replace 20% - 40% fish meal in broiler diets with similar growth rate and feed consumption as the control diet (Liu ChanMin et al., 2003).
- 7. Locust (सलह): Animal Feed Practices In the Philippines, Free-range chickens fed on grasshoppers have a preferred taste with a higher market price (Khusro et al., 2012). Later study, grasshopper meal included at 2.5% in the diet was found to be a suitable and cheaper substitute for imported fishmeal (100% replacement on weight basis) (Ojewola et al., 2005). Meal of adult variegated grasshopper (Zonocerus variegatus) could replace up to 25% fish meal (weight basis) in the diets of C. gariepinus fingerlings without any adverse effect on growth and nutrient utilization at the same protein level in the diet.
