This document discusses the potential for using locusts as animal feed in Nepal. The locust invasion affecting 22 districts in Nepal could provide both a challenge and an opportunity. Locusts are high in protein, fat and nutrients valuable for animal feed. Studies in other countries found locust meal can partially or fully replace fishmeal in poultry and fish diets without negatively impacting growth or health. The document proposes developing locust collection and processing methods to create a locust-based animal feed industry in Nepal that would help control locust swarms while providing income opportunities.
