3. DER - NSW - What the....
✤ The Digital Education Revolution is the fullfillment of an election promise
made by Kevin Rudd in 2007
✤ A feberally funed initiative implemented by relevant state authorities eg
NSWDET
✤ Laptops rolled out each year since 2009 to Year 9 students
✤ Laptops also rolled out to staff
✤ Includes major infrastructure upgrades, teacher training and support
networks

✤ Rollout to students (with returned user charters) from Monday 28th
February 2011 - most likely Thursday 3rd March 2011

13. DER Supporting Infrastructure
✤ Wireless Access Points have been installed in all learning spaces
✤ based on Wireless N - secure, reliable, fast
✤ Backup is the students responsibility
✤ MyLocker available- must be synched regularly!
✤ Otherwise use a USB key or external drive
14. Laptops Care and Safety
✤ Hard Plastic Case
✤ Offers good protection
✤ Won’t stand up to mistreatment
✤ Laptops must be “hibernated” before being placed inside
✤ Anti-theft technology
✤ Safe Usage at Home’
✤ e.g. don’t sit laptop on a pillow
✤ Guidelines for safe usage are available from the TSO (or on the Web!)
15. Laptop Charging
✤ Must be brought to school every
day fully charged
✤ Make charging part of your
routine
✤ No chargers at school!
✤ If you use your laptop for “other
stuff” e.g. movies at lunchtime
ensure it has enough charge for
the whole day
16. In the classroom
✤ Provide unprecedented
opportunity for collaboration
✤ not just within the class group,
perhaps regional, national or
even international collaboration
is possible
✤ Every Job in the future will use
technology in some form
✤ Teacher training provided
18. User Charter
✤ An agreement between the student, parents/careres and teh school
regarding the use and care of the laptop
✤ Must be signed by both parents / guardians AND students before a laptop
can be issued
20. If a laptop is stolen
✤ Report to the TSO
✤ Complete an incident report
✤ Obtain a police repot and return it ASAP to TSO
✤ A laptop can be temporarily loaned to the student
✤ Stolen laptops will be disabled
21. If a laptop is lost....
✤ Report to the TSO
✤ Complete an incident report
✤ Fill out a statutory declaration
✤ You are responsible for the cost
✤ termporary loans of spare laptops may be available
✤ Lost laptops will be disabled
22. If laptop isn’t working
✤ Report to TSO (not during class time unless you have your teachers
permission!)
✤ TSO will diagnose and fix if possible...
✤ otherwise TSO will coordinate with vendors
✤ Malicious or accidental damage is NOT covered by warranty
✤ Temporary loans of spare laptops may be available
