Enterprise Integration Patterns Revisited (again) for the Era of Big Data, In...Kai Wähner
In 2015, I had two talks about Enterprise Integration Patterns at OOP 2015 in Munich, Germany and at JavaDay 2015 in Kiev, Ukraine. I reused a talk from 2013 and updated it with current trends to show how important Enterprise Integration Patterns (EIP) are everywhere today and in the upcoming years.
Applications have to be integrated – no matter which programming languages, databases or infrastructures are used. However, the realization of integration scenarios is a complex and time-consuming task. Over 10 years ago, Enteprise Integration Patterns (EIP) became the world wide defacto standard for splitting huge, complex integration scenarios into smaller recurring problems. These patterns appear in almost every integration project.
This session revisits EIPs and gives shows status quo. After giving a short introduction with several examples, the audience will learn which EIPs still have a „right to exist“, and which new EIPs emerged in the meantime. The end of the session shows different frameworks and tools which already implement EIPs and therefore help the architect to reduce efforts a lot.
How to Choose the Right Technology, Framework or Tool to Build MicroservicesKai Wähner
Microservices are the next step after SOA: Services implement a limited set of functions. Services are developed, deployed and scaled independently. This way you get shorter time to results and increased flexibility.
Microservices have to be independent regarding build, deployment, data management and business domains. A solid Microservices design requires single responsibility, loose coupling and a decentralized architecture. A Microservice can to be closed or open to partners and public via APIs.
This session discusses technologies such as REST, WebSockets, OSGi, Puppet, Docker, Cloud Foundry, and many more, which can be used to build and deploy Microservices. The main part shows different open service frameworks and proprietary tools to build Microservices on top of these technologies. Live demos illustrate the differences. The audience will learn how to choose the right alternative for building Microservices.

Real World Use Cases and Success Stories for In-Memory Data Grids (TIBCO Acti...Kai Wähner
A lot of data grid products are available. TIBCO ActiveSpaces, Oracle Coherence, Infinispan, IBM WebSphere eXtreme Scale, Hazelcast, Gigaspaces, GridGain, Pivotal Gemfire to name most of the important ones. Not SAP HANA!
The goal of my talk was not very technical. Instead, I discussed several different real world use cases and success stories for using in-memory data grids. Here is the abstract for my talk:
NoSQL is not just about different storage alternatives such as document store, key value store, graphs or column-based databases. The hardware is also getting much more important. Besides common disks and SSDs, enterprises begin to use in-memory storages more and more because a distributed in-memory data grid provides very fast data access and update. While its performance will vary depending on multiple factors, it is not uncommon to be 100 times faster than corresponding database implementations. For this reason and others described in this session, in-memory computing is a great solution for lifting the burden of big data, reducing reliance on costly transactional systems, and building highly scalable, fault-tolerant applications. The session begins with a short introduction to in-memory computing. Afterwards, different frameworks and product alternatives are discussed for implementing in-memory solutions. Finally, the main part of this session shows several different real world uses cases where in-memory computing delivers business value by supercharging the infrastructure.

The ability to deliver software is no longer a differentiator. In fact, it is a basic requirement for survival. Companies that embrace cloud native patterns of software delivery will survive; companies that don’t - will not.
In this webinar, we will:
- Look at the common patterns that distinguish cloud native companies and the architectures that they employ.
- Discover that an opinionated platform, one that stretches from the infrastructure all the way to the application framework, rather than ad-hoc automation, is an essential component to an enterprise's cloud native journey.
- Show that the combination of Pivotal Cloud Foundry and Spring is the complete cloud native platform.

Cloud Native Computing: What does it mean, and is your app Cloud Native?Michael O'Sullivan
There is a growing choice of Cloud Platforms available today - these provide services and tooling for developers to deploy applications to the Cloud. The Cloud has brought considerations such as elastic scalability and distributed computing to the forefront of modern application architectures. Over time, a new type of application has now emerged, known as the Cloud Native Application. Such an application is said to be purpose-built for deployment on the Cloud. This has even led to a new paradigm known as Cloud Native Computing. In practice though, it is easy to be confused or unclear as to what Cloud Native means. How does a Cloud Native approach change the way in which developers code applications? How does this influence the architecture of an application? Does it force you to use a certain set of technologies such as Containers? Or, does it mean that an application that simply runs and scales on a distributed Cloud Platform is somehow considered to be running natively on the Cloud? Cloud Native Computing impacts on the answers to each of these questions, and applications running on the Cloud may not be considered Cloud Native at all.
In this talk, the meaning of Cloud Native will be explored and clarified. With practical examples where appropriate, the concepts behind a Cloud Native Application will be demonstrated. These examples will not only touch on the common terms and phrases around Cloud Native Computing such as DevOps, Microservices, The 12-Factor App methodology, but also on the technologies that have driven the creation this new paradigm, such as Cloud Foundry, Docker, and Kubernetes. How these technologies are used to deploy and scale Cloud Native Applications on "Platform as a Service" (PaaS) Cloud Platforms will also be presented.
At the conclusion, what is considered a Cloud Native Application and why should be clear - the attributes and typical architecture of such an application, as well as how technologies and PaaS services can be used to drive these applications on the cloud.
The topic "SaaS", which was once such a disputed topic, has now been widely accepted. The increase in the adoption as well as the new technology innovations such as cloud has significantly evolved SaaS architecture.

The development world is changing at a dizzying pace, the development environment of Microsoft Visual Studio. Net, leading a crazy race, it haunts version version, innovative tools and technologies emerge constantly. Developer community is in constant pursuit to keep pace with technological development and to implement them in developing applications and products they develop.
Development teams to business organizations was an enormous challenge:
On the one hand, they are under pressure to develop functional requirements and applications and products that are the core business of the organization, on the other hand, they develop the same requirements particularly dynamic development environment, as noted above, developed and advanced at an incredible rate.
Managers of development organizations face a complex dilemma - whether to allocate time and resources for learning technology, examining how to implement and assimilation among development teams, all at the expense of development time of applications and products of the company - most organizations scales tipped in favor of developing products and applications, leading to the erosion of knowledge, not adoption new technology and tools that can streamline and increase the productivity of the development team and improve the products and applications that the organization develops.
Meeting a representative of the current trends in world development, the plans ahead of Microsoft and how technological organization can and should organize themselves, both professionally and in business to maximize its resources and exploit the most of technology has to offer

Not just individuals, today even organisations big and small alike, struggle to keep up with the increasing pace of change intheir business requirements. They know that to keep pace with it, they must quickly build and deploy compelling web and mobile applications that connect with their customers, staff and other stakeholders in new and engaging ways.
The challenge, for many, is how? Recent study found that 85% of organisations want to deploy new apps faster yet only 18% have the means and ability to do so. All of which means over two thirds of organisations are failing to build and deploy the applications their business needs demand-a better way must be found.

Architecting for Scalable and Usable Web Applications
As Enterprises and Software Vendors start to develop more and more applications on the Internet there is an increasing importance to architect these applications for both growth and for the optimal user experience. Software + Services allows you to develop fantastic applications, but there are pitfalls with architecting the applications in the wrong way.
Our Central Region Architect Evangelists will lead us through two great discussions on scaling web applications and creating the best possible user experience.
Session 1: Architecting for Scalable Web Applications In this session we will explore the patterns that typical applications follow as their scalability needs grow due to increased demand. We will also discuss best practices from companies that have gone up the scalability curve like Amazon.com, MySpace and Flickr. We will discuss the common bottlenecks that prevent scalability as well as how to tackle tough issues like state management in a application that is scaled across servers and even data centers. We will also discuss the “scale later” philosophy and how it should be accompanied by a solid plan to scale your applications.
Session 2: Architecting for Usable Web Applications In this session we will discuss how to architect your application with the user in mind. We have more choices than ever before for developing applications (Traditional Web Apps, AJAX, RIA technologies like Flex and Microsoft Silverlight and even smart clients) and picking the technology is only part of the solution. The architecture of the application must be designed correctly to provide a pleasing user experience and (potentially) to add new and interesting clients in the future.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

Editor's Notes
3 years ago, Mitchell Kertzman, the creator of PowerBuilder, called me into his office and said “Chris,
What Is WaveMaker?
What can you do with WaveMaker? Wavemaker allows anyone to build great-looking web apps and deploy them anywhere they want.
In fact, Gartner sees Citizen developers taking on a significant role in developing business applications over the next four years. 04/03/10 Definition: Gartner defines a Citizen Developer as "a user operating outside of the scope of enterprise IT and its governance who creates new business applications for consumption by others either from scratch or by composition."
“ Perfect storm” 04/03/10 Strategic Planning Assumption: Four forces are driving a shift to more application development by end users, and by 2014, at least 25% of new business applications will be created by Citizen Developers.
Gartner recommends WaveMaker as the only open source RAD tool for cloud computing Definition: Gartner defines a 4GL as "a visual programming model or some higher level of definition beyond pure specification of procedural code, possibly via declarative design specification."
WaveMaker’s development studio runs in a browser and looks like PowerBuilder or MS Access. Use drag and drop to assemble your application, deploy to your desktop a data center or a variety of clouds with a single click, and maintain your application easily using WM
The WaveMaker platform is based entirely on open source components like Spring and Hibernate. WaveMaker consists of 4 components: 1) the drag and drop developer studio, 2) the runtime, which provides security and cloud management; 3) a set of prebuilt application templates that enable drag and drop assembly of business applications and integration with collaboration services like email, document sharing and contact management
Developing applications visually has a huge productivity payoff For SAIC, we cut the time to get new developers productive on Java from 2 years to 2 months For National City Bank, we reduced the amount of code needed to build a customer management system by 98% For KANA, we helped them reduce maintenance costs for their customers by over 75%
WaveMaker is used by developers who are not Java experts but who want to build standards-based web applications. It turns out, there are a lot of those people! WaveMaker has been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times, but what we track are the number of developers who download the product, then come back and register for the WaveMaker community and participate actively there. So far, WaveMaker has gained over 15,000 community developers – so not only are we the only open source player in the cloud dev platform space, but we have also built significant momentum in that space.
As an open source product, getting started with WaveMaker is incredibly easy. You can download WaveMaker or go to cloud.wavemaker.com to access our cloud-based development studio. Next, join our fanatical developer community to get help and support for your project. Finally, contact Wavemaker to get training, services and support.
