Abstract: QIVICON is an Eclipse SmartHome based solution from Deutsche Telekom AG. It utilises OSGi to provide a modular Java runtime.
Since the beginning, QIVICON leveraged Eclipse PDE with Maven & Eclipse Tycho as its build technology but over the time, the complexity increased. It became hard to get an overview and manage the runtime and build dependencies. Especially maintaining target configurations for IDE and CI/CD build, having different embedded gateways for installation increased complexity significantly.
Bndtools is the 'swiss army knife' in the context of OSGi development since it takes the nitty-gritty pains and loads off the developer's chest. And that's why we decided to avail the benefits of Bndtools.
But, many other OSGi-based projects still cannot avail the benefits as they are very tightly coupled with Eclipse PDE. Want to make a switch from your existing PDE source base to Bndtools? This talk would give you an overview to proceed towards this.
We would like to further demonstrate in this talk how to set up a Bndtools workspace from an existing PDE workspace, convert all current projects to Bnd projects and embrace the OSGi-way of developing bundles.
Since QIVICON containing more than 350 projects utilised this solution to move to a higher modularity maturity level, this talk would, therefore, outline the pros, cons and the learnings using Bndtools in such a big OSGi project for embedded development.

Language Server Protocol enables language features to be built for editors in a common and reusable manner. Eclipse MicroProfile seeks to optimize enterprise Java for microservices architecture. The newly created incubator project, Eclipse LSP4MP, attempts to build a language server for MicroProfile APIs to enable developers to easily build cloud-native applications using Eclipse MicroProfile.
In this session, we will provide an introduction to the project, share the latest progress, and discuss what's next. We will share about the journey to build this first language server for Eclipse MicroProfile and lessons accrued along the way. It’s become a bit of a buzzword, but it’s so much more! The benefits of GitOps are real – they bring you security, reliability, velocity and more! And the project that started it all was Flux – a CNCF Incubating project developed and later donated by Weaveworks (the GitOps company who coined the term).
Pinky will share from personal experience why GitOps has been an essential part of achieving a best-in-class delivery and platform team. Pinky will give a brief overview of definitions, CNCF-based principles, and Flux’s capabilities: multi-tenancy, multi-cluster, (multi-everything!), for apps and infra, and more.
Pinky will cover a little of Flux’s microservices architecture and how the various components deliver this robust, secure, and trusted open source solution. Through the components of the Flux project, users today are enjoying compatibility with Helm, Jenkins, Terraform, Prometheus, and more as well as with cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and more.

DETAILS ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
Kubernetes has been one of the topics in 2017 and will probably remain so in 2018. In this hands-on technical workshop you will learn how best to deploy, operate and scale Kubernetes clusters from one to hundreds of nodes using DC/OS. You will learn how to integrate and run Kubernetes alongside traditional applications and fast data services of your choice (e.g. Apache Cassandra, Apache Kafka, Apache Spark, TensorFlow and more) on any infrastructure.
This workshop best suits operators focussed on keeping their apps and services up and running in production and developers focussed on quickly delivering internal and customer facing apps into production.
You will learn how to:
- Introduction to Kubernetes and DC/OS (including the differences between both)
- Deploy Kubernetes on DC/OS in a secure, highly available, and fault-tolerant manner
- Solve operational challenges of running a large/multiple Kubernetes cluster
- One-click deploy big data stateful and stateless services alongside a Kubernetes cluster

A lot of functionality necessary for running in a microservices architecture have been built into Kubernetes; why would you re-invent the wheel with lots of complicated client-side libraries? Have you ever asked why you should use containers and what are the benefits for your application? This talk will present a microservices application that have been built using different Java platforms: WildFly Swarm and Vert.x. Then we will deploy this application in a Kubernetes cluster to present the advantages of containers for MSA (Microservices Architectures) and DevOps. The attendees will learn how to create, edit, build, deploy Java Microservices, and also how to perform service discovery, rolling updates, persistent volumes and much more. Finally we will fix a bug and see how a CI/CD Pipeline automates the process and reduces the deployment time.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex Proofs
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).
