WHO WAS DEMING???
 William Edwards Deming (October 14,
1900 – December 20, 1993) was an
American engineer, statistician,
professor, author, lecturer, and
management consultant.
 Deming was one of the worlds leaders
and experts in quality control. He had
a strong impact on the American and
Japanese industries.
 He introduced the idea of continuous
improvement i.e. PDCA (Plan-Do-
Check-Act) cycle.

Japan after WWII, particularly his
work with the leaders of Japanese
industry.
 Japanese credit Deming for Japanese
post-war economic miracle of 1950
to 1960, when Japan became the
second most powerful economy in the
world in less than a decade founded
on the ideas Deming taught.

HISTORY
 Dr. Deming was in Japan giving lectures on statistical process control and was
recorded for distribution and profit.
 Funds were donated to Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers (JUSE)
 Kenichi Koyanagi, the managing director of the JUSE, used those funds to
create the Deming prize to individuals or organizations in 1951.

PURPOSE OF THE AWARD
 The purpose of the Deming Prize was to recognize those who excelled in
quality control and as a way of driving quality control.
 It was also established to thank Dr. Deming for his accomplishments and
impact in the Japanese industry.

THE DEMING PRIZE
 The Deming Prize is the oldest and most widely recognized quality award in
the world
 It is a global quality award that recognizes both individuals for their
contributions to the field of Total Quality Management (TQM) and businesses
that have successfully implemented TQM.

AWARD CATEGORIES
There are three categories of award:
 The Deming Prize for Individuals: Given to individuals who have made
outstanding contributions to the study of TQM or statistical methods used for
TQM, or individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the
dissemination of TQM.
 The Deming Application Prize or Deming Prize: Given to companies or
divisions of companies that have achieved distinctive performance
improvement through the application of TQM in a designated year.

 The Quality Control Award for Operation Business Unit: Given to operations
business units of a company that have achieved distinctive performance
improvement through the application of quality control/management in the
pursuit of TQM in a designated year.

WHO QUALIFIES???
 Award available to individuals and organizations
 Individuals are able to receive the Deming Prize unlike other quality awards
such as the Baldrige Award. The deadline for application is July 31st every
year for the individual Deming Prizes.
 No limit to winners
 Annually presented to companies that show improvement in the field of total
quality management
 No industry barrier
 Divisions of a company, if the division works as an entity

QUALIFICATION
The following points are considered for the qualification of this prize:
 Customer-oriented business objectives and strategies are established in a
positive manner according to the management philosophy, type of industry,
business scale, and business environment with the clear management belief.
 TQM has been implemented properly to achieve business objectives and
strategies as mentioned in Item 1 above.
 The business objectives and strategies in the Item 1 above have been
achieving effects as an outcome of the Item 2 above.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE DEMING
PRIZE EXAMINATION???
 Deepen understanding of TQM and boost the morale of employees across the
organization for TQM implementation and promotion
 Create a structure to advance TQM and set up a TQM promotion plan
 Provide education on quality management
 Identify issues and make improvements
 Start from an in-house QC diagnosis and move on to achieve higher goals
 Apply for Deming Prize

PROCESS OF EXAMINATION
 After an organization applies for this award, they will go through 2
examinations.
 First is the document examination that is based on the description of TQM Practice
and if pass the document examination
 They will have an on-site examination.
 Committee will judge on the evaluation criteria and reports the result to the
Deming Prize Committee. Once they determine the winner, they will publish
with the reason why the organization receives the prize followed by the award
ceremony.
