Grokking TechTalk #33: High Concurrency Architecture at TIKIGrokking VN

Efficient data access is key to a high-performing application. Amazon Web Services provides several database options to support modern data-driven apps and software frameworks to make developing against them easy. We look at the design of a modern serverless web app using Amazon DynamoDB, the DynamoDB Mapper, Amazon Lambda, Amazon API Gateway and the SDKs and tackle the move from relational to NoSQL data models.

Gil Tene provides an in-depth overview of Latency and Response Time Characterization, including proven methodologies for measuring, reporting, and investigating latencies, and overview of some common pitfalls encountered (far too often) in the field. Tene also covers specific considerations in garbage collected environments (such as Java). Filmed at qconsf.com.
Gil Tene is CTO and co-founder of Azul Systems. He has been involved with virtual machine and runtime technologies for the past 25 years. His pet focus areas include system responsiveness and latency behavior. Gil pioneered the Continuously Concurrent Compacting Collector (C4) that powers Azul's continuously reactive Java platforms.
HBase 2.0 is the next stable major release for Apache HBase scheduled for early 2017. It is the biggest and most exciting milestone release from the Apache community after 1.0. HBase-2.0 contains a large number of features that is long time in the development, some of which include rewritten region assignment, perf improvements (RPC, rewritten write pipeline, etc), async clients, C++ client, offheaping memstore and other buffers, Spark integration, shading of dependencies as well as a lot of other fixes and stability improvements. We will go into technical details on some of the most important improvements in the release, as well as what are the implications for the users in terms of API and upgrade paths. Existing users of HBase/Phoenix as well as operators managing HBase clusters will benefit the most where they can learn about the new release and the long list of features. We will also briefly cover earlier 1.x release lines and compatibility and upgrade paths for existing users and conclude by giving an outlook on the next level of initiatives for the project.
We like the architecture of our applications to revolve around the business logic, not around technical details (and especially not around the database).
In my team at Sky Network Services we use the Clean Architecture and it has given us a great deal of benefits: the business logic is explicit, we are free to change our technical decisions, the app is easy to test, working on it is faster and scalable, it’s hard to do the wrong thing, and many more.
But it comes at a cost, of course. In this talk I’ll tell you the story of our experience with Clean Architecture and give you some tips to get the most out of it.

GraphQL is a query language for APIs and a runtime for fulfilling those queries. It gives clients the power to ask for exactly what they need, which makes it a great fit for modern web and mobile apps. In this talk, we explain why GraphQL was created, introduce you to the syntax and behavior, and then show how to use it to build powerful APIs for your data. We will also introduce you to AWS AppSync, a GraphQL-powered serverless backend for apps, which you can use to host GraphQL APIs and also add real-time and offline capabilities to your web and mobile apps. You can follow along if you have an AWS account – no GraphQL experience required!

Why we wrote this booklet…
We created this booklet in order to share our experiences in becoming a state of the art API provider. The Swisscom API program started in September ‘13 in cooperation with Apigee. We went through all the typical difficulties that come along with such a big change process.
We are still learning and would like to start a discussion to find new ways to cooperate beyond the past “thinking in silos” in order to move forward to a connected world.

Restful Web Services is a lightweight, manageable and scalable service based on the REST architecture. Restful Web Service exposes your application’s API in a secure, uniform, and stateless manner to the calling client.

WS serves as an interface to software developers.
Using WS as an API you can convert applications into web-applications.
WS is the vision of ‘Future Internet’
The basic Web services platform is XML + HTTP.
WS is future for Mobile application
Overview of REST web service concepts (Representational State Transfer).
REST is a radically different approach for web services compared to the combo SOAP/WSDL.
REST defines an architectural style for web applications and web services.
REST makes heavy use of the underlying HTTP protocol.
REST itself is not a protocol but defines architectural principles based on the concept of addressable resources and a uniform access to these resources based on the well-known HTTP-methods GET, POST, PUT and DELETE.
The state of a client (web service consumer) is controlled by the REST web service through connected links between resources (resource oriented architecture). The client state however is stored on the client itself thus greatly increasing scalability of REST-based architectures.
The REST paradigm has mostly superseded SOAP / WSDL type web services in many enterprise applications. This is largely owed to the fact that the underlying HTTP protocol is well understood and proved its scalability in the WWW.

RAD Server is a turn-key application foundation for rapidly building and deploying services based applications. RAD Server provides automated Delphi and C++ REST/JSON API publishing and management, Enterprise database integration middleware, IoT Edgeware and an array of application services such as User Directory and Authentication services, Push Notifications, Indoor/Outdoor Geolocation and JSON data storage. RAD Server enables developers to quickly build new application back-ends or migrate existing Delphi or C++ client/server business logic to a modern services based architecture that is open, stateless, secure and scalable. RAD Server is easy to develop, deploy and operate making it ideally suited for ISVs and OEMs building re-deployable solutions.
ER/Studio is the complete business-driven data architecture solution that combines data modeling, business process, and application modeling and reporting with cross-organizational team collaboration for data architectures and enterprises of all sizes.
“Oh my goodness! What did I do?” Chances are you have heard, or even uttered this expression. This demo-oriented session will show many examples where database professionals were dumbfounded by their own mistakes, and could even bring back memories of your own early DBA days.
Businesses make critical decisions using key data assets, but stakeholders often find it difficult to navigate the complex data landscape to ensure they have the right data and understand it correctly. Companies are dealing with a number of different technologies, multiple data formats, and high data volumes, along with the requirements for data security and governance.

We will look at options for forcing a query to use a particular execution plan. Finally, you will learn how this complex problem can be identified and resolved simply using a new feature in SQL Server 2016 called Query Store.
