’Tis the season to be jolly — but it’s not so jolly for many consumers, as the holidays can cause financial stress and often put consumers into debt. According to a nationwide survey from Experian, the primary reason is that most consumers don’t create budgets and are unprepared to cover added expenses beyond gifts, such as postage costs, hostess gifts, gift-wrapping supplies and greeting cards.
Experian Millennial Credit & Finance Survey Report Part IIExperian_US
Experian® has released additional findings from a national survey among more than 1,000 millennials, ages 19 to 34, showing that this generation struggles with using credit as a tool to enhance their lives. This struggle can be attributed to unawareness of credit terms and conditions and a mixed attitude regarding credit cards. A majority (64 percent) of survey respondents consider them “dangerous,” while almost 30 percent have maxed out a card.

Back-to-School Survey 2014: Rising to the head of the class (Infographic)Deloitte United States
The back-to-school season is upon us again and it continues to evolve. The Internet is climbing as one of the top shopping destinations; mobile and digital continue to influence the purchase process; and the dedicated summer shopping season is seemingly of less importance as consumers will wait until the last minute to shop — with some even completing their purchases after the school year begins. It is no longer your parents’ back-to-school season and we are exploring what is driving consumers’ decisions in 2014.

Coming Full-Circle: The Store As The Center Of The Omnichannel Shopping JourneyG3 Communications
A brand can travel with a shopper wherever she roams, from the couch to the car and into the mall. But it is the store that remains the most important part of her shopping journey. Today's smart retailers are embracing that journey by re-imaging their stores as a physical expression of their brand and the center of the omnichannel shopping journey by providing solutions and services that delight shoppers from the minute they enter the store through checkout and beyond.
This optimum experience can be facilitated through key strategies and solutions, around assisted selling in the store, omnichannel fulfillment and social monitoring following the transaction, encouraging the customer to visit the store more and more.
The experience may look something like this: Karen sees a special online and sets up an appointment to go to the store. At the store she is greeted by her personal shopper, who shows Karen the blouse she has chosen, but also presents accessories and shoes. Karen is delighted with the personalized service and easy shopping experience. The purchase, including upsell, is completed on the spot with mobile point of sales capabilities. But that's not the end of the story. After the sale, Karen receives special offers from the store, for herself and friends. They all return for more shopping…and live happily ever after.

Nathan Kendrick, Founder and Partner at DesignMap gave a refreshing talk that puts designing products for work into a whole new perspective. He shared with us his journey from studying design at RISD and how he gained appreciation for designing enterprise products.
As technology becomes more widely available and entrenched in peoples’ lives at home, their expectations around ease of use and design aesthetics continue to rise for products they use at work. Long gone are the ’90s when mostly what we expected from productivity software was automating repetitive manual tasks. Consumer expectations are forcing businesses to give design a seat at the table. Here at DesignMap we are fortunate to have help our clients integrate design into their culture and make kick ass products. Sometimes we are even around to see it pay off like when ExactTarget, a long-term DesignMap client, was acquired by Salesforce for $2.5 billion.
Yes, designing for Enterprise can be sexy because of the monetary opportunity and that designers are well positioned to make the applications look beautiful. We learned from Nathan’s talk that according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans age 25-54 spend an average of 53% of their waking hours at work. So working on designing enterprise products allow us to to do what we love and at the same time have huge positive impact on people’s lives too!
Nathan called for designers working on enterprise products to contribute to the conversation. So, share your stories with us!

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
