EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This document presents an overview of the technical results of a joint-MicroStrategy and HP
performance benchmark. The tests show how MicroStrategy Business Intelligence (BI) Platform and
HP Integrity Servers provide a scalable and cost-effective solution for organizations looking to deploy
mission critical Enterprise BI applications.
The testing configuration included the MicroStrategy BI Platform installed on HP Integrity Servers
with 64-bit Intel
®
Itanium
®
2 processors and the HP-UX 11i operating system. One HP Integrity rx8620
server was used for MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal (64-bit) Edition; and two HP Integrity
rx4640 servers were used for MicroStrategy Web. Three different tests were run: A scale-in test, a
scale-out test, and a multi-level shared cache test.
THE RESULTS SHOW:
The 64-bit MicroStrategy Intelligence Server
Universal Edition can support 10,000 active
users within a single HP Integrity server,
achieving an average response time of 4.45
seconds.
MicroStrategy Intelligence Server allows
organizations to double the number of
supported users simply by doubling the
number of Intelligence Server CPUs (scale-
in) on the HP Integrity rx8620 server, while
maintaining performance at an outstanding
sub-5 second average response time.
MicroStrategy clustering capabilities provide
linear scalability by adding servers (scale-
out), when adding CPUs to a single server is
not possible or not desired.
MicroStrategy’s multi-level, shared caching
significantlyimprovesperformance bya factor
greater than 10x, even at 10,000 active users.
The choice of adding CPUs (scale-in) or
adding clustered servers (scale-out) is a
strategic IT decision based on the
organization’sneeds. The decisionisprimarily
focused on a trade-off of reduced server
maintenance (scale-in) versus failover
protection (scale-out). Either way, the
combination of MicroStrategy BI software on
HP Integrity server provides outstanding user
scalability and performance, while enabling
IT with the flexibility to choose the
configuration best-suited for their enterprise
BI applications.
Scalability of the MicroStrategy BI platform
extends beyond static online reporting to the
full range of interactive OLAP functionality.
Thus, users can exercise functionality such
as “pivot,” “sort,” “page-by,” “drill-anywhere,”
and prompts, and still benefit from the high
performance and scalability of the
MicroStrategy BI platform.

INTRODUCTION
Organizations are increasingly considering their
Business Intelligence systems to be mission-
critical Enterprise applications. Thus, an
organization’ssuccessdepends onbusinessusers
being able to efficiently and effectively use
Business Intelligence applications.
More and more, IT executives who are
implementing Enterprise BI face two major
concerns. The first one is scalability of the BI
application.
The second factor, generally overlooked by most
BI vendors, relates to efficiency. Can the BI
applications scale in a cost-effective way?
Unfortunately, many relatively small or
departmental BI applications scattered across
the organization become exponentially more
expensive as they try to scale to Enterprise BI
applications. The hardware resource expense and
IT administrative effort grows much faster, the
more number of users the application supports.
This paper will show how MicroStrategy 8, due
to its unique Relational OnLine Analytical
Processing, or ROLAP, capabilities and its unified
architecture, can help organizations deploy
scalable, Enterprise-wide Business Intelligence
with the least amount of IT resources.
DELIVERING ENTERPRISE BUSINESS
INTELLIGENCE EFFICIENTLY
Successful BI applications create an accelerating
need for even more reports, scorecards, and
analyses. Every newly-deployed report sparks
the desire formore reports. Moreover, companies
typically deploy dozens of variations of each
major report to satisfy specific interests of
different user groups, each with varying data
security and requirements. Most departmental
BI technologies focus on building single reports
relativelyquicklywithaminimumofinfrastructural
rigor, creating a maintainability nightmare as the
number of reports grows. A true industrial-
strength BI architecture must allow each new
report to be developed more quickly than the
last one and should minimize the number of
reports that need to be explicitly designed in the
first place.
An efficient Business Intelligence deployment is
one that delivers Enterprise BI with the least
amount of IT effort. This means efficient BI
applicationscandelivermillionsofreportsneeded
by the diverse business user population, yet
reduce the number of reports that IT must
explicitly develop, the amount of effort required
to maintain BI applications, and the amount of
hardware necessary to support the increasing
user population.
MicroStrategy 8 supports highly-efficient,
Enterprise-wideBusinessIntelligence attributable
to five critical technological capabilities:
DYNAMIC PROMPT ENGINE -
Prompting allows the user to dynamically
control the complete scope of analysis, not
just the filtering criteria. Prompts expand
the potential analysis of a single report
definition by giving users the flexibility to
decide what attributes and metrics to include
when the report is run. Prompts also focus
the analytical process by enabling users to
provide filtering criteria that limit the cross-
section of the Enterprise data warehouse to
include in the analysis. Most importantly,
users have the flexibility to expand the scope
of their analysis to any part of the enterprise
data warehouse dynamically, without the
need for new reports to be created by IT.
4

HP MicroStrategy White Paper
OLAP ANALYSIS WITH UNIQUE “DRILL
ANYWHERE” CAPABILITY –
’s unique “drill anywhere” capability allows
users to surf the entire data warehouse
without requiring IT to hardcode drill paths
and maintain them. “Drill anywhere” is only
available with MicroStrategy’s Relational
OLAP technology or ROLAP. With “drill
anywhere,” a user can start with almost any
report, and drill to any other set of data in
the data warehouse without ever requiring
IT to design new reports or anticipate their
needs.
AUTOMATIC PERSONALIZATION
THROUGH CELL-LEVEL DATA SECURITY
Administratorscanprotect data byrestricting
user access to an exact range of information
using Security Filters. As every report is run,
it is personalized for each user based on that
user’s security profile. This security feature
ensures that every user sees only the data
that they are allowed to see and only the
data relevant to their work. Whereas other
BI technologies require many variations of
the same report to be designed for different
user populations, the MicroStrategy
architecture requires only one report to be
designed, irrespective of who might run it,
and then automatically tailors the contents
of the report for each user.
MULTI-LEVEL SHARED CACHING –
MicroStrategy provides four levels of
intelligent caching, in order to ensure users
always have instant access to reports and
analysis. The levels of cache offered by
MicroStrategy platform are “report XML
cache,” “attribute elements cache,”
“metadata object cache,” and “database
connection cache.” These multiple layers of
caching are aware of security profiles and
present only authorized information to the
user.
FULL 64-BIT BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE –
A major requirement in large-scale user
deployments is to provide high capacity
within a single server. MicroStrategy is one
of the very few BI technologies that are
compiled to the full breadth of modern 64-
bit operating systems. While most other
vendors can technically run on 64-bit
machines, they are not compiled to 64-bit,
and thus are still constrained to the 2-4 GB
memory limits of 32-bit systems. This
difference means that only MicroStrategy
can take advantage of the virtually unlimited
addressable memory space1
available on 64-
bit machines, affording MicroStrategy
applicationssufficient memoryfortherichest
BI functionality, high-performance shared
caches, and working space for tens of
thousandsof users – all within a single server.
1 Thirty-two-bit compiled software applications can practically only access 2-4 Gigabytes of RAM. In contrast, 64-bit compiled
software applications can theoretically access 2^64 RAM or approximately 18 Exabytes of RAM. Practically, 64-bit applications
typically use 8-64 Gigabytes of RAM.

For the caching test (see Test Configurations),
only one HP server was used.
2 Hewlett-Packard's nPartition system capabilities enable you to configure a single server complex as one large system or
as multiple smaller systems. These hard partitions are designed to provide for complete electrical and software isolation. For
organizations where high availability is critical, this feature ensures that any fault within one partition cannot impact any
other partition. Applications running within hard partitions are not subject to hardware or software events in other partitions.
Figure 3-2 shows the overall performance testing environment. The configuration above remained constant
except for the “BI Application Server” tier or the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server tier, which varied depending
upon the tests conducted.

TESTING TOOLS
Web user traffic and connections were generated
using MicroStrategy proprietary testing software
called MFCBlaster, which measures the steady
rate of transaction submission and average
response time for all transactions.
REPORTS USED FOR THE TESTS
The data wasderived from a TPC-H database and
is representative of any business that manages,
sells, or distributes products. The following is a
description of representative samples of the 11
distinct reports used during the tests.
A cross-tab report shows revenue for parts
sold and part types. This report displays a
grid containing up to 15,232 cells of data,
depending on the prompt answers selected
by the user.
A cross-tab report shows account balance
and total cost for individual suppliers,
supplier’s region and nation. This report
shows up to 1,257 cells of data, depending
on the user’s profile.
TEST CONFIGURATIONS
Web user connections were simulated on the
client machines using MFCBlaster. These
MFCBlaster users were connected to
MicroStrategy Web to execute different actions,
including “report execution,”OLAP manipulations
including “sort,” “pivot,” and “page-by,” and ad-
hocreportingusingpromptsanddrillfunctionality.
It is important to highlight that no delays were
included in any of the testing scripts, meaning
that all users in the systemwere trulyconcurrent
users. Adding delays into the system can
effectively reduce the true level of concurrency,
making a system appear more scalable, when in
reality, many of the users might be idle.
For the purpose of this analysis, we assume a
concurrent user to active user ratio of 2%. In
general, concurrent user to active user ratios
vary, depending on the specific production
environment.
Three benchmarks were performed to
demonstrate the scalability of the MicroStrategy
BI platform.
1. Ascale-intestwasperformed todemonstrate
single-server scalability of the MicroStrategy
platform at different levels of concurrency.
Tests were conducted with1,2, 4, and 8CPUs.
2. A scale-out test was performed to prove
scalability of MicroStrategy’s proprietary
clustering capabilities. Tests were conducted
with single node and 2-node configurations.
For the purpose of this test, 4-CPUs were
active on each server node.
3. A multi-level, shared cache test was
performed to show how MicroStrategy’s
efficient multi-level caching capabilities can
considerably enhance performance. For the
purpose of this test, 4-CPUs were active on
theMicroStrategyIntelligenceServermachine.

RESULTS ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION
Figure 4-1 shows the Scale-In performance testing environment. The Intelligence Server tier varied the number
of CPUs and the number of active users for each series of tests.
SCALE-IN
To Scale-in means to increase the number of processors on a single server in order to increase its
capacity. An organization may choose this configuration because of reduced cost and management
overhead offered by a single server approach.
THE SCALE-IN TEST CONFIGURATION (FIGURE 4-1):
Scale-in tests were performed with 1, 2, 4, and 8 CPUs in order to demonstrate MicroStrategy
Intelligence Server scalability on a single server.
The performance metric, Average Response Time, was measured3.
The number of active users and CPUs were doubled for each set of tests.

To Scale-out means to increase the number of
serversrunninganapplicationinordertoincrease
capacity. Typically, a scale-out system is
implemented using a cluster configuration. A
cluster is two or more servers or “nodes”
perceived as a single-server resource. An
organization may choose this configuration
because it offers fail-over support. If one of the
servers in a cluster fails, the others can continue
on with the work.
The Scale-out test configuration (Figure 4-3):
Scale-out tests were performed comparing

MULTI-LEVEL SHARED CACHE
Caching is a common performance optimization
technique used by software applications. For BI
software, caching stores frequently-used pieces
ofinformationtoimproveperformance4. However,
not all caching available from BI software
companies is created equal. Most applications
will merely cache the final report results. While
4 From Wikipedia: “In computer science, a cache (pronounced like the English word cash) is a collection of data duplicating
original values stored elsewhere or computed earlier, where the original data is expensive (usually in terms of access time) to
fetch or compute relative to reading the cache. Once the data is stored in the cache, future use can be made by accessing the
cached copy rather than re-fetching or re-computing the original data, so that the average access time is lower.”
12
this limited caching certainly helps performance,
it is generally insufficient, especially at high user
loads. Performance is further hampered by the
fact that the report results must exactly match
a user’s security restrictions in order to reuse the
report results.

Conversely, MicroStrategy provides four levels of
intelligent caching to ensure that users always
have instant access to reports and analysis. Each
different level of caching was designed taking
into consideration various usage scenarios and
user behavior in order to provide the most
improvement.
To illustrate the importance of caching, consider
the following scenario. A business user may log
into MicroStrategy, search for a report, build a
new report, answer a prompt, run the report,
conduct further analysis on the result set, and
save the report before logging out. Within this
query flow, Intelligence Server caches specific
data in these four crucial areas:
1. Metadata object cache speeds up metadata
browsing and ad hoc report creation.
2. Attribute element cache speeds up prompted
data requests.
3. Database connection cache speeds up
database communicationand query requests.
4. Report results XML cache speeds up
presenting final report results and analysis.
These multiple layers of caching are aware of
security profiles, thereby presenting only
authorized information to the user; therefore,
caches can be shared among users who don’t
have the same security profile.
THE MULTI-LEVEL SHARED CACHE TEST
CONFIGURATION (FIGURE 4-5):
Multi-level cache tests compared a single 4-
CPU Intelligence Server with caching turned
off vs. a single 4-CPU Intelligence Server with
caching turned on.
The tested reports simulated heavy load
conditions.
Average response time was measured for
both configurations.
Both configurations were tested to a
maximum load of 10,000 active users.

THE MULTI-LEVEL CACHE TEST RESULTS SHOW (FIGURE 4-6):
1. The average response time is nearly 10x faster on average than with caching turned off at the
highest user loads.
2. Response time remains nearly constant throughout the tests, even at higher active user loads.
3. The average response time performance improvement is most evident at higher active user loads,
where one user can benefit from results cached by other users, thereby underscoring the importance
of a sophisticated caching architecture to support user scalability.

This level of scalability is achieved due to four
core capabilities of MicroStrategy platform.
1. MicroStrategy Intelligence Server’s full 64-
bit support takes advantage of the expanded
addressable memory space to handle more
users and larger caches.
2. MicroStrategy Intelligence Server’s scale-in
capabilities effectively and efficiently use the
increased computing power of additional
CPUs for maximum performance.
3. MicroStrategy’s clustering capabilities
automatically balance the load across all
MicroStrategy servers in the cluster for
maximum scale-out performance.
4. MicroStrategy’s multi-level, shared caching
architecture speeds up response time,
maximizing performance as more people use
the system.
SPECIFICALLY THE TEST RESULTS SHOW:
The 64-bit MicroStrategy Intelligence Server
Universal Edition can support 10,000 active
users within a single HP Integrity server,
achieving an average response time of 4.45
seconds.
MicroStrategy Intelligence Server allows
organizations to double the number of
supported users simply by doubling the
number of Intelligence Server CPUs (scale-
in) on the HP Integrity rx8620 server, while
maintaining performance at an outstanding
sub-5 second average response time.
MicroStrategy clustering capabilities provide
linear scalability by adding servers (scale-
out) when adding CPUs to a single server is
not possible or not desired.
CONCLUSION
MicroStrategy’s multi-level shared caching
significantlyimprovesperformance,byafactor
greater than 10x, even at 10,000 active users.
The choice of adding CPUs (scale-in) or
adding clustered servers (scale-out) is a
strategic IT decision based on the
organization’sneeds. The decisionisprimarily
focused on a trade-off of reduced server
maintenance (scale-in) versus failover
protection (scale-out). Either way, the
combination of MicroStrategy BI software
on HP Integrity server provides outstanding
user scalability and performance, while giving
IT the flexibility to choose the configuration
best for their Enterprise BI applications.
Scalability of the MicroStrategy BI platform
extends beyond static online reporting to
the full range of interactive OLAP
functionality. Thus, users can exercise
functionality such as “pivot” “sort,” “page-
by,” “drill-anywhere,” and prompts, and still
benefit from the high performance and
scalability of the MicroStrategy BI platform.

processors provide full 64-bit support laying
out a strong, yet flexible, foundation for
mission-critical Enterprise applications such
as MicroStrategy BI platform.
The test results show that the MicroStrategy BI
platform provides the functionality and scalability
that organizations need to implement and
maintain their BI implementations with minimum
resources. Furthermore, organizations can be
assured that as their BI implementations evolve
THE RESULTS VALIDATE THAT THE MICROSTRATEGY BI PLATFORM RUNNING ON HP
INTEGRITY SERVERS DELIVERS A HIGHLY-SCALABLE BI ARCHITECTURE.
MicroStrategy can scale equally well by adding CPUs (scale-in) to a single HP server or by adding
servers (scale-out) to a cluster. More importantly, due to its unique architecture, MicroStrategy is
capable of delivering more reports to more business users across the Enterprise with the minimum
amount of it resources.

  • 3. SCALABLE 64-BIT BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE FOR THE ENTERPRISE HP MicroStrategy White Paper EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This document presents an overview of the technical results of a joint-MicroStrategy and HP performance benchmark. The tests show how MicroStrategy Business Intelligence (BI) Platform and HP Integrity Servers provide a scalable and cost-effective solution for organizations looking to deploy mission critical Enterprise BI applications. The testing configuration included the MicroStrategy BI Platform installed on HP Integrity Servers with 64-bit Intel ® Itanium ® 2 processors and the HP-UX 11i operating system. One HP Integrity rx8620 server was used for MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal (64-bit) Edition; and two HP Integrity rx4640 servers were used for MicroStrategy Web. Three different tests were run: A scale-in test, a scale-out test, and a multi-level shared cache test. THE RESULTS SHOW: The 64-bit MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal Edition can support 10,000 active users within a single HP Integrity server, achieving an average response time of 4.45 seconds. MicroStrategy Intelligence Server allows organizations to double the number of supported users simply by doubling the number of Intelligence Server CPUs (scale- in) on the HP Integrity rx8620 server, while maintaining performance at an outstanding sub-5 second average response time. MicroStrategy clustering capabilities provide linear scalability by adding servers (scale- out), when adding CPUs to a single server is not possible or not desired. MicroStrategy’s multi-level, shared caching significantlyimprovesperformance bya factor greater than 10x, even at 10,000 active users. The choice of adding CPUs (scale-in) or adding clustered servers (scale-out) is a strategic IT decision based on the organization’sneeds. The decisionisprimarily focused on a trade-off of reduced server maintenance (scale-in) versus failover protection (scale-out). Either way, the combination of MicroStrategy BI software on HP Integrity server provides outstanding user scalability and performance, while enabling IT with the flexibility to choose the configuration best-suited for their enterprise BI applications. Scalability of the MicroStrategy BI platform extends beyond static online reporting to the full range of interactive OLAP functionality. Thus, users can exercise functionality such as “pivot,” “sort,” “page-by,” “drill-anywhere,” and prompts, and still benefit from the high performance and scalability of the MicroStrategy BI platform. HP Integrity servers with Intel ® Itanium ® 2 processors provide full 64-bit support, laying out a strong, yet flexible foundation for mission-critical enterprise applications such as MicroStrategy BI platform. 3
  • 4. SCALABLE 64-BIT BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE FOR THE ENTERPRISE HP MicroStrategy White Paper INTRODUCTION Organizations are increasingly considering their Business Intelligence systems to be mission- critical Enterprise applications. Thus, an organization’ssuccessdepends onbusinessusers being able to efficiently and effectively use Business Intelligence applications. More and more, IT executives who are implementing Enterprise BI face two major concerns. The first one is scalability of the BI application. The second factor, generally overlooked by most BI vendors, relates to efficiency. Can the BI applications scale in a cost-effective way? Unfortunately, many relatively small or departmental BI applications scattered across the organization become exponentially more expensive as they try to scale to Enterprise BI applications. The hardware resource expense and IT administrative effort grows much faster, the more number of users the application supports. This paper will show how MicroStrategy 8, due to its unique Relational OnLine Analytical Processing, or ROLAP, capabilities and its unified architecture, can help organizations deploy scalable, Enterprise-wide Business Intelligence with the least amount of IT resources. DELIVERING ENTERPRISE BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE EFFICIENTLY Successful BI applications create an accelerating need for even more reports, scorecards, and analyses. Every newly-deployed report sparks the desire formore reports. Moreover, companies typically deploy dozens of variations of each major report to satisfy specific interests of different user groups, each with varying data security and requirements. Most departmental BI technologies focus on building single reports relativelyquicklywithaminimumofinfrastructural rigor, creating a maintainability nightmare as the number of reports grows. A true industrial- strength BI architecture must allow each new report to be developed more quickly than the last one and should minimize the number of reports that need to be explicitly designed in the first place. An efficient Business Intelligence deployment is one that delivers Enterprise BI with the least amount of IT effort. This means efficient BI applicationscandelivermillionsofreportsneeded by the diverse business user population, yet reduce the number of reports that IT must explicitly develop, the amount of effort required to maintain BI applications, and the amount of hardware necessary to support the increasing user population. MicroStrategy 8 supports highly-efficient, Enterprise-wideBusinessIntelligence attributable to five critical technological capabilities: DYNAMIC PROMPT ENGINE - Prompting allows the user to dynamically control the complete scope of analysis, not just the filtering criteria. Prompts expand the potential analysis of a single report definition by giving users the flexibility to decide what attributes and metrics to include when the report is run. Prompts also focus the analytical process by enabling users to provide filtering criteria that limit the cross- section of the Enterprise data warehouse to include in the analysis. Most importantly, users have the flexibility to expand the scope of their analysis to any part of the enterprise data warehouse dynamically, without the need for new reports to be created by IT. 4
  • 5. SCALABLE 64-BIT BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE FOR THE ENTERPRISE HP MicroStrategy White Paper OLAP ANALYSIS WITH UNIQUE “DRILL ANYWHERE” CAPABILITY – ’s unique “drill anywhere” capability allows users to surf the entire data warehouse without requiring IT to hardcode drill paths and maintain them. “Drill anywhere” is only available with MicroStrategy’s Relational OLAP technology or ROLAP. With “drill anywhere,” a user can start with almost any report, and drill to any other set of data in the data warehouse without ever requiring IT to design new reports or anticipate their needs. AUTOMATIC PERSONALIZATION THROUGH CELL-LEVEL DATA SECURITY Administratorscanprotect data byrestricting user access to an exact range of information using Security Filters. As every report is run, it is personalized for each user based on that user’s security profile. This security feature ensures that every user sees only the data that they are allowed to see and only the data relevant to their work. Whereas other BI technologies require many variations of the same report to be designed for different user populations, the MicroStrategy architecture requires only one report to be designed, irrespective of who might run it, and then automatically tailors the contents of the report for each user. MULTI-LEVEL SHARED CACHING – MicroStrategy provides four levels of intelligent caching, in order to ensure users always have instant access to reports and analysis. The levels of cache offered by MicroStrategy platform are “report XML cache,” “attribute elements cache,” “metadata object cache,” and “database connection cache.” These multiple layers of caching are aware of security profiles and present only authorized information to the user. FULL 64-BIT BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE – A major requirement in large-scale user deployments is to provide high capacity within a single server. MicroStrategy is one of the very few BI technologies that are compiled to the full breadth of modern 64- bit operating systems. While most other vendors can technically run on 64-bit machines, they are not compiled to 64-bit, and thus are still constrained to the 2-4 GB memory limits of 32-bit systems. This difference means that only MicroStrategy can take advantage of the virtually unlimited addressable memory space1 available on 64- bit machines, affording MicroStrategy applicationssufficient memoryfortherichest BI functionality, high-performance shared caches, and working space for tens of thousandsof users – all within a single server. 1 Thirty-two-bit compiled software applications can practically only access 2-4 Gigabytes of RAM. In contrast, 64-bit compiled software applications can theoretically access 2^64 RAM or approximately 18 Exabytes of RAM. Practically, 64-bit applications typically use 8-64 Gigabytes of RAM. 5

MicroStrategy IntelligenceServer Universal (64-bit) Edition One 16-way HP Integrity rx8620 server was divided into two physical partitions, or nPars2 , each of them containing 8 CPUs. MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal was installed on each physical partition. ThenumberofCPUsutilizedbyMicroStrategy Intelligence Server on each physical partition of the HP Integrity servers varied from one to eight in order to test different hardware scenarios. SOFTWARE INSTALLATION 2. MicroStrategy Web Universal Installed on two HP Integrity rx4640 servers. For the scale-in and scale-out tests (see Test Configurations), bothHP Integrity servers and all the CPUs on each server were used. For the caching test (see Test Configurations), only one HP server was used. 2 Hewlett-Packard's nPartition system capabilities enable you to configure a single server complex as one large system or as multiple smaller systems. These hard partitions are designed to provide for complete electrical and software isolation. For organizations where high availability is critical, this feature ensures that any fault within one partition cannot impact any other partition. Applications running within hard partitions are not subject to hardware or software events in other partitions. Figure 3-2 shows the overall performance testing environment. • 8. SCALABLE 64-BIT BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE FOR THE ENTERPRISE HP MicroStrategy White Paper TESTING TOOLS Web user traffic and connections were generated using MicroStrategy proprietary testing software called MFCBlaster, which measures the steady rate of transaction submission and average response time for all transactions. REPORTS USED FOR THE TESTS The data wasderived from a TPC-H database and is representative of any business that manages, sells, or distributes products. The following is a description of representative samples of the 11 distinct reports used during the tests. A cross-tab report shows revenue for parts sold and part types. This report displays a grid containing up to 15,232 cells of data, depending on the prompt answers selected by the user. A cross-tab report shows account balance and total cost for individual suppliers, supplier’s region and nation. This report shows up to 1,257 cells of data, depending on the user’s profile. TEST CONFIGURATIONS Web user connections were simulated on the client machines using MFCBlaster. These MFCBlaster users were connected to MicroStrategy Web to execute different actions, including “report execution,”OLAP manipulations including “sort,” “pivot,” and “page-by,” and ad- hocreportingusingpromptsanddrillfunctionality. It is important to highlight that no delays were included in any of the testing scripts, meaning that all users in the systemwere trulyconcurrent users. Adding delays into the system can effectively reduce the true level of concurrency, making a system appear more scalable, when in reality, many of the users might be idle. For the purpose of this analysis, we assume a concurrent user to active user ratio of 2%. In general, concurrent user to active user ratios vary, depending on the specific production environment. Three benchmarks were performed to demonstrate the scalability of the MicroStrategy BI platform. 1. Ascale-intestwasperformed todemonstrate single-server scalability of the MicroStrategy platform at different levels of concurrency. Tests were conducted with1,2, 4, and 8CPUs. 2. A scale-out test was performed to prove scalability of MicroStrategy’s proprietary clustering capabilities. Tests were conducted with single node and 2-node configurations. For the purpose of this test, 4-CPUs were active on each server node. 3. A multi-level, shared cache test was performed to show how MicroStrategy’s efficient multi-level caching capabilities can considerably enhance performance. For the purpose of this test, 4-CPUs were active on theMicroStrategyIntelligenceServermachine. 8

SCALABLE 64-BIT BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE FOR THE ENTERPRISE HP MicroStrategy White Paper 3 The OLAP Survey 5, published in 2005 and conducted annually by independent analyst Nigel Pendse and Survey.com, (http://www.survey.com/olap), compiled the BI experiences of 2,100 Organizations. The OLAP Survey 5 shows that organizations can maximize their business benefits by using “Performance” as the number one factor when selecting a BI software tool. The Intelligence Server tier varied the number of CPUs and the number of active users for each series of tests. SCALE-IN To Scale-in means to increase the number of processors on a single server in order to increase its capacity. An organization may choose this configuration because of reduced cost and management overhead offered by a single server approach. THE SCALE-IN TEST CONFIGURATION (FIGURE 4-1): Scale-in tests were performed with 1, 2, 4, and 8 CPUs in order to demonstrate MicroStrategy Intelligence Server scalability on a single server. The performance metric, Average Response Time, was measured3. The number of active users and CPUs were doubled for each set of tests. 9

  • 11. SCALABLE 64-BIT BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE FOR THE ENTERPRISE HP MicroStrategy White Paper To Scale-out means to increase the number of serversrunninganapplicationinordertoincrease capacity. Typically, a scale-out system is implemented using a cluster configuration. A cluster is two or more servers or “nodes” perceived as a single-server resource. An organization may choose this configuration because it offers fail-over support. If one of the servers in a cluster fails, the others can continue on with the work. The Scale-out test configuration (Figure 4-3): Scale-out tests were performed comparing a single node configuration with one 4-CPU Figure 4-3: Scale-Out Test Configuration Figure 4-3 shows the Scale-Out performance testing environment for the 2-node Intelligence Server cluster. No additional third-party hardware or software was required to cluster MicroStrategy Intelligence Server. Unlike many other BI software vendors, MicroStrategy provides advanced clustering capabilities out-of-the-box. Both configurations were tested to a maximum load of 10,000 active users. Average response time was measured for both configurations. SCALE OUT THE SCALE-OUT TEST RESULTS SHOW (FIGURE 4-4): 1. A 2-node cluster average response time is, on average, twice as fast as that of a single node server instance, even at high user loads. 2. MicroStrategy clustering capabilities provide linear scalability by adding additional servers (scale- out) when adding CPUs to a single server is not possible or not desired. MULTI-LEVEL SHARED CACHE Caching is a common performance optimization technique used by software applications. For BI software, caching stores frequently-used pieces ofinformationtoimproveperformance4. However, not all caching available from BI software companies is created equal. Most applications will merely cache the final report results. While 4 From Wikipedia: “In computer science, a cache (pronounced like the English word cash) is a collection of data duplicating original values stored elsewhere or computed earlier, where the original data is expensive (usually in terms of access time) to fetch or compute relative to reading the cache. Once the data is stored in the cache, future use can be made by accessing the cached copy rather than re-fetching or re-computing the original data, so that the average access time is lower.” 12 this limited caching certainly helps performance, it is generally insufficient, especially at high user loads. Performance is further hampered by the fact that the report results must exactly match a user’s security restrictions in order to reuse the report results.

Each different level of caching was designed taking into consideration various usage scenarios and user behavior in order to provide the most improvement. To illustrate the importance of caching, consider the following scenario. A business user may log into MicroStrategy, search for a report, build a new report, answer a prompt, run the report, conduct further analysis on the result set, and save the report before logging out. Within this query flow, Intelligence Server caches specific data in these four crucial areas: 1. Metadata object cache speeds up metadata browsing and ad hoc report creation. 2. Attribute element cache speeds up prompted data requests. 3. Database connection cache speeds up database communicationand query requests. 4. Report results XML cache speeds up presenting final report results and analysis. These multiple layers of caching are aware of security profiles, thereby presenting only authorized information to the user; therefore, caches can be shared among users who don’t have the same security profile. THE MULTI-LEVEL SHARED CACHE TEST CONFIGURATION (FIGURE 4-5): Multi-level cache tests compared a single 4- CPU Intelligence Server with caching turned off vs. a single 4-CPU Intelligence Server with caching turned on. The tested reports simulated heavy load conditions. Average response time was measured for both configurations. Both configurations were tested to a maximum load of 10,000 active users.

  • 15. SCALABLE 64-BIT BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE FOR THE ENTERPRISE HP MicroStrategy White Paper This level of scalability is achieved due to four core capabilities of MicroStrategy platform. 1. MicroStrategy Intelligence Server’s full 64- bit support takes advantage of the expanded addressable memory space to handle more users and larger caches. 2. MicroStrategy Intelligence Server’s scale-in capabilities effectively and efficiently use the increased computing power of additional CPUs for maximum performance. 3. MicroStrategy’s clustering capabilities automatically balance the load across all MicroStrategy servers in the cluster for maximum scale-out performance. 4. MicroStrategy’s multi-level, shared caching architecture speeds up response time, maximizing performance as more people use the system. SPECIFICALLY THE TEST RESULTS SHOW: The 64-bit MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal Edition can support 10,000 active users within a single HP Integrity server, achieving an average response time of 4.45 seconds. The test results show that the MicroStrategy BI platform provides the functionality and scalability that organizations need to implement and maintain their BI implementations with minimum resources. Furthermore, organizations can be assured that as their BI implementations evolve THE RESULTS VALIDATE THAT THE MICROSTRATEGY BI PLATFORM RUNNING ON HP INTEGRITY SERVERS DELIVERS A HIGHLY-SCALABLE BI ARCHITECTURE. MicroStrategy can scale equally well by adding CPUs (scale-in) to a single HP server or by adding servers (scale-out) to a cluster. More importantly, due to its unique architecture, MicroStrategy is capable of delivering more reports to more business users across the Enterprise with the minimum amount of it resources. 15
