Industry 4.0 - The State of the Nations - Executive SummaryInfosys
The first major study in the field of Industrial Manufacturing to shed light on asset efficiency as a major driver for competiveness and to identify company-specific readiness and maturity for Industry 4.0 enabled asset efficiency.
In 2012, The Economist claimed we were entering the third industrial revolution based on the digitization of manufacturing, also referred to as the “smart factory.” The development and adoption of the Internet of Things is a critical element of smart manufacturing as reduced sensor device cost, and increased connectivity and in-memory processing give manufacturers the ability to gather and use data to increase product quality and transform operations. IT organizations are increasingly involved with the management, security and governance of this data as equipment and products are connected to the internet. This session will provide a practical framework for evaluating ways to improve sensor enablement, transaction processes and analytics based on real-world customer examples.
Companies have access to all kinds of data (internal and external), and realize its importance. The challenge is how to gain the precise insights and intelligence you need in real-time. Learn more: https://accntu.re/2KzKpTp
Future-Proofing Asset Failures with Cognitive Predictive MaintenanceAnita Raj
The industry is reeling under the explosion of data generated by smart sensors, motors, actuators, machines, and other “things”. With the pace at which production is happening currently, the last straw would be an asset breakdown. Statistics show that the automotive industry deals with an alarming 800 hours of downtime every month. The cost of such downtime is a staggering US$22,000 per minute, or US$12.6 million a month.
Additionally, data shows that 20% of these breakdowns are common or predictable and that a majority – a shocking 80% – of them are seemingly random instances and cannot be predicted.
According to McKinsey, the Industrial IoT (IIoT) market is worth $11 trillion, and predictive maintenance solutions can help companies save $630 billion over the next 15 years. So, how can manufacturers tap these savings and benefits?
Learn how manufacturer and suppliers can experience the power of Cognitive Predictive Maintenance (CPdM) to avoid unplanned downtimes and drive greater efficiencies.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

3. IoT Machinery Data Analytics
“Data is the new oil”, how often have we heard this statement in the last 5 years? Never
before has this been truer, especially in the manufacturing industry.
Machines and production lines are generating high volumes of data, with high granularity and in
a continuous way. Those data can (must) be used to create tangible value for the company,
something measurable also in terms of time to market and efficiency, hence, improved
economics and margins.

4. Many companies have already adopted the Industry 4.0
paradigm, applying Artificial Intelligence to complex dataset,
trying to get in return actionable insights in order to achieve
ambitious yet fundamentals goals:
■ Reduce Energy consumption
■ Adopt a predictive maintenance approach
■ Increase processes efficiency (chemical reactions)
■ Reduce waste of raw material
■ Increase life expectancy of precision tools
■ …
However, they’re using a “static” approach, working on historical
data, being able to act only AFTER the analysis is completed and

5. A NEW PARADIGM: MOVING FROM STATIC TO
DYNAMIC
In the last few years, a new paradigm for advanced analytics has
emerged: Event Stream Processing (ESP). It is the ability to process
data in motion, i.e. to start processing events as soon as they happen,
within few milliseconds. This paradigm, combined with A.I., enables a
complete new approach to IoT Data Analytics, shifting to a Dynamic
Model:
The actionable insights are now IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE, during
the process, not after.
Key benefits
■ Avoid errors and apply corrections dynamically, during the
process
■ Continuous monitoring of the processes, enabling immediate
response to anomalies
■ Readiness to evolve into a Continuous Intelligence application
