Defining X - The Changing Role of Design
Reflections on the evolving role, meaning, value and purpose of design.

Stuttgart 2017
The evolution of the workspace concept and environment was connected with the evolution of the human society and economy models through the history.
Today our society is based on knowledge and the workspace concept needs to evolve accordingly.
On September 8, 2011, Design that Matters Director of Product Development, Elizabeth Johansen, co-facilitated a workshop at SOCAP11 alongside Sami Nerenberg of Design for America and Saul Garlick of Think Impact. The workshop was part of a series of design thinking workshops curated by Sarah Brooks.
In design, after immersing with the stakeholders, one of the most difficult and little-explained next steps is to take all of those observations and turn them into frameworks to guide the design going forward. Design that Matters, Think Impact, and Design for America co-created a workshop to give participants a crash course in framing challenges. Think Impact provided a case study and observations from the field. Then participants were asked to imagine a better future together.

The 10 Most Creative Interior Designers to WatchMerry D'souza
"In Insights Success Magazine, we have introduced The 10 Most Creative Interior Designers to Watch, in order to create smart spaces and to deliver people choose their right Interior designers. If the Design Process were a boy band, Feature Prioritization would never be the fan favorite with a breakout solo career. Prioritization isn’t sexy. It hurts to let go of the beloved features created during brainstorming. The decision-making design phase often involves negotiation and compromise in an uncomfortable social environment. Prioritization can be downright painful!
If only you could recapture the enthusiasm and creative glow of brainstorming. Well, wish no longer! Design fairy godmothers Carolyn Chandler and Anna van Slee are here to transform this pumpkin into a stage coach. Strap in!
This presentation checks the current, trends and the possible future of work. Time was limited to 25 minutes, yet generated 50+ tweets, indicating the subject is indeed interesting.
Some of the challenging areas of change and future is technology alone will not solve it, neither will a focus on a change of corporate habits and culture. It needs to be a joint action.
The presentation is edited post-presentation as a flip-board chart was used for flexibility with the audience as well as co-creation effects.

In this edition by Insights Success, we celebrate the ‘Business Achievers to Watch’. As with Rome, these success stories were not built in a day. They were witness to failures, self-doubts, and a lot of things that do not look like success. But let us not forget to celebrate every bit of it!

People struggle with pitching their ideas because it seems tedious to sum up something in an elevator pitch that has been cooking up in their brains for some time.
This talk shows no matter the role, idea or job maturity how easy it can be to pitch an idea. Learn in less than 15 minutes how to pitch your idea. No prerequisites required, just some focus and a dash of fun.

Founded in March 2017, Big Tiny is the first company in Singapore to integrate the concept of “tiny houses” with eco-tourism. “Tiny houses” are part of an international trend of simplifying lives by reducing the size, and therefore the resource consumption, of homes without sacrificing quality of life.
Big Tiny takes the movement one step further by placing its beautifully designed, handcrafted compact homes on wheels in spectacular rural settings. The intent – to amplify the benefits of the “tiny house” movement by pairing the advantages of a thoughtfully efficient abode with the recharging potential of an intimate connection with Mother Nature.
The brainchild of 3 young Singaporean entrepreneurs, Big Tiny stems from a desire to 1) offer the city dweller a chance to experience the perfect escape from a hectic, digitally-laden lifestyle; and 2) enable anyone to have a part in this new way of living.

Capturing Contexts: A workshop with jobs-to-be-done tools / Service Experienc...Martin Jordan
Customers hire services and products to do a certain job. Once people spot a job in their life they start looking for a solution, an offering that helps them to get the job done. Which offering they eventually hire often depends on the circumstances in which the job occurs.
This workshop highlighted the importance of customers’ situations and contexts when creating new offerings. As circumstances are changing, people’s related needs and desired outcomes do too. Using the example of food-related services, the workshop at Service Experience Camp 2015 illustrated how all offerings fulfil the general need of feeding humans, but also which specific situations each service caters for.
The workshop was run by Andrej Balaz, Hannes Jentsch and Martin Jordan on November 14, 2015 at Service Experience Camp in Kalkscheune in Berlin-Mitte.

Sustainability as a Design Asset - Creative Sustainability Programme - Aalto University
Sustainability in design is common topic of discussion and one of the most interesting areas of development in professional design practice. Design agencies taking an active role in promoting sustainability face multiple viewpoints in their clients organizations, a need to take part in defining this still complex concept and responsibility of illustrate by practical actions the possibilities within this approach.
Critical Success Factors in a Furniture Development ProcessAntti Pitkänen
The work by the Designer presented here, the chair and the written thesis were the outcome of a project carried out under the Invited Overseas Designers program organized between Oribe Design Centre and University of Art and Design Helsinki. The client in this project was a Japanese furniture manufacturer Toyoisu Co, Ltd. The official part of the project started on the 19th of September 2006 and carried on until 18th of January 2007. The final result of the project was a chair called Neo which was launched commercially in March 2008 in Japan.
The chair made out three-dimensionally curved steel pipe chair was designed to support user in comfort. The chair is conceived to change the atmosphere and give a new face to offices and shops. The gap between the back of the seat and the pipe frame gives elasticity to the backrest and makes it comfortable even when sitting for a long time. Neo-chairs are stackable and available in other colours and materials for special orders.
The written work is a review of the critical success factors of the product development process used in the furniture industry. The thesis draws together the best practices of established companies, together with thoughts presented in the main product development literature. In the end, it looks at the experience of the designer in the program in the light of the findings of the literature review and the interview based case studies, to conclude in describing practices that can be seen to be critical in determining the success of a furniture development project
Communicating Environmental Friendliness through Product Design and AppearanceAntti Pitkänen
This thesis studies ways for mobile devices to communicate environmental friendliness to consumers. As background for the empirical research, consumer behavior, product semantics and emotional design have been studied. The empirical findings of this thesis are based on interviews and a survey. The interpretation and conclusions of the results from both the interviews and the survey were projected by means of the theoretical framework. The mobile devices were examined by their design elements, such as color, material, design style and technologies.
Consumers do not usually connect ICT-technology with environmental issues. As a finding of the thesis, it can be presented that the analyzed design elements affect the perceived environmental image of the product. The semantic language of environmental friendliness is obviously young. Therefore, in order to successfully communicate environmental friendliness, the product’s communicative elements must be clear and distinct, even naïve, and create a connection between the product and the environment.
Based on this study, green, blue and white are colors that have the strongest reference to environmental friendliness, while black and pink are colors that have the least reference to environmental friendliness. Natural materials, such as rock and wood, are perceived most environmentally friendly, plastics and metals are the opposite. Simple and purposeful design style is perceived more environmental friendly than showy or technical looks. Technically simpler and more durable mobile devices were perceived more environmentally friendly than music, video or 3G mobile devices, although evaluation of single features was perceived difficult. Also differences between the perceived greenness of different electronics brands do exist. This thesis concludes the research results in four conceptual suggestions for products that support an environmentally friendly message.
The sampling of the research had a majority of academically educated Finnish citizens and, therefore, the study gives information concerning only the phenomenon itself without studying differences between demographic groups. Reliability of the study was improved by taking multiple approaches, by conducting interviews and an Internet-based survey that was accessible by invitation only. Design elements are mostly analyzed separately even though they exist as combinations in real life.
Previous studies related to the topic are scarce. This thesis suggests that the bilateral impact of design elements and the impact of cultural backgrounds should be further studied. Also the testing of presented product concepts is suggested for future studies. The topic should be expanded and deepened by further studies.
Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

she realizes that she doesn’t get

In the morning the light from the

getting stronger, emitting light
into the bedroom.
The light is at its strongest just
before it is time for Karl to wake
up. This allows him usually to
gently wake up before his alarm

Karl stays in bed for a little while
before getting up. He hesitates of
waking up Beate as she seems
to be in very deep sleep.
Karl goes to have a shower.
They have arranged this so as it
takes longer for her to wash her

the lights emit an artificial full

In the last 6 months, we have established a routine. If my wife needs to wash her
hair then I go first so that she can have more time. We’ll discuss it in the evening as
it depends who has work the next day

Karl and Beate have been
happily married for 20 years.
They have worked a great deal in
order to have balanced and
successful lifes.
DAY IN KARL AND BEATE’S LIFES
Karl works as a construction
engineer in the city and Beate as
history teacher in a nearby high
school. Karl has to generally
work longer days as he has to
commute into town, so a great
deal of the housework falls on
Beate.
They live in an residential area
near a major German city, in a
house that they designed and
built with the help of an architect
friend. Apart from comfort they
are concerned of the state of the
environment, that is why they
have carefully selected a number
of energy efficient solutions for
their home.
Karl and a Beate like to spend
their free time comfortably
together and have recently
installed a new intelligent wash
place which helps them get
through their hectic days easier.
