• Use defining relative clauses to explain what a
person, thing, or place is or does
A cook is a person who makes food
A clock is something which tells the time
A plost office is a place where you can buy stamps

• Use who or that for people
That’s the woman who/that won the lottery
• Use which or that for things
Is that the book which/that everyone’s reading
• Use where for places
That’s the restaurant where I had dinner yesterday

• When who/which or that is the subject of the
relative clause, you don’t need to add a noun or
pronoun as the subject.
