This document provides guidance on writing a review, including key success factors such as expressing a sophisticated opinion using varied vocabulary and appropriate grammar. It discusses summarizing the plot briefly without giving everything away, stating your opinion, and recommending whether something should be read. Examples are given of book reviews for the novel Beloved by Toni Morrison that praise its haunting narrative but find it sometimes difficult to follow, staying with the reader long after, while another review struggles with its complexity and obtuse style.

In class, we’ve discussed several themes from The Bonesetter’s Daughter, themes that illuminate ongoing issues in the world today. For your third essay, you have two choices. A.) You may write a literary analysis
focusing on deconstructing the novel and arguing for your interpretation of it. Or B.) You may pick and analyze a theme/issue from the novel that highlights a particular problem, situation or idea, and then argue for your own position on the issue and for its significance and importance in our world today. For choice B, you will be writing a text-based argument that focuses on the issue but uses the novel as springboard and evidentiary source.
Your primary objective for this paper will be to make a well-informed, carefully considered contribution to an ongoing conversation or debate about an important topic. Your audience for this essay is comprised of scholars who are interested in your topic and who may be aware of the important texts, thinkers and arguments frequently cited within your chosen conversation. However, while your readers may be familiar with some of the more influential voices that you will cite, they will expect you to remind them of key words or statements. These academic readers like texts, and they respect well-read participants of the conversation, so you should use textual support as a way of establishing your own credibility.
Manuscript Notes: Your essay should be thesis-driven and be supported by logical and well-developed reasons, evidence and explanations. Your evidence should derive from texts read in this class and from outside research, supporting not only your claims but also referencing possible counterarguments and opposing views. Your essay should include at least 2 outside researched sources. This essay should be at least 1250 words in length (4-5 full pages) and be formatted according to MLA guidelines using Times New Roman 12 pt. font and 1” margins. You must include a Works Cited page at the end of your essay (this page is not part of the 1250-word length requirement). When you quote key phrases or clauses, you must provide proper MLA parenthetical documentation. Also, your essay must have a relevant title that hints at the topic you are writing about and your thesis. The title will be part of your grade. Remember that your polished draft MUST be submitted as a MS Word file to turnitin.com via Moodle on the day the essay is due. I will not grade essays that have not been submitted to turnitin.com. If you submit your essay late to turnitin.com, then it will be considered as a late submission and will suffer the necessary grade deduction outlined in the course syllabus.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad was challenging to read, because of the way it was written and because of the dark themes in the piece. Conrad included strong, rich details which helped me navigate the story, though it was a little challenging for me to understand certain parts of the book. Much like many of you, I had to reread a couple of the passages to clearly understand what was happening and what Conrad wanted to be the takeaway from that specific passage. I thought it was well written, but I did not agree with the brutality the natives endured within the piece.
After hearing a shrieking scream, we see how the men on the boat’s initial reaction is to grab their guns. “Two others remained open-mouthed a whole minute, then dashed into the little cabin, to rush out incontinently and stand darting scared glances, with Winchesters at ‘ready’ in their hands” (Conrad 35). One can understand that they be fearful, but at the same time, it makes you question humanity when men are ready to shoot at anything without knowing what or who it is.
The reading personally reminded me of all of the hate, darkness, and evils in our world, through history to modern times. It made me evaluate the racism towards the natives in this story. They were viewed, stereotyped, and judged based on the simple fact that they were natives in Africa. The reading went against my views and values. I realize there is racism within society, but I will not stand for it or anyone in support of it. It deeply saddens me that it is 2018 and we’re still dealing with racism.
If I were to recommend this reading to someone, I might recommend it to someone who doesn’t realize the scope of racism. This text would definitely open their eyes up to how disgusting the treatment of people can be based on their skin color or where they are from. Heart of Darkness allows us to understand the severity of racism back then, and relate it to similar instances throughout history, up into circumstances in today’s society.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

This review is from: Beloved (Vintage Classics) (Paperback)
I had never heard of Toni Morrison before this book was suggested as the
next read at my book club, although she has been honoured with a Nobel
Prize for Literature. After reading "Beloved" I can see why she won the
Pulitzer Prize for this haunting novel. The book is written in a style which is
at first hard to get used to, and I found the first eighty pages or so
challenging. However, the beauty and poetry of the narrative is
penetrating, and perfectly contrasts with the brutality of the plot.
The novel revolves around Sethe: her struggle for freedom from the
oppressive and highly disturbing life that she leads as a slave, and the
shocking and heartbreaking decision she comes to in order to 'save' her
children from such a life. When a stranger arrives at her door the lives of
Sethe and those closest to her are changed forever.
"Beloved" is a novel which has stayed with me long after I read the last
page, and is a must-read for any serious literature lover.

This review is from: Beloved (Paperback)
For the critical reader, this book will give you much to think about; even if you're not, you'll still have to lot
to consider on what you have read.
The only negative comment I have about this book is that because its a work of fiction and because of
Morrison's almost poetic style and the difficult issue of slavery, it is sometimes hard to remember (for
me anyway) that her characters (although fictional) were based around real people (google Margaret
Garner).
Beloved is just the tip of the REAL horrors of slavery. If you find the events that occur in the lives of the
characters' bad enough, consider this: a lot worse happened to a lot of REAL life people. Its strange;
this life, this century is all, all of us living know and have experienced. Because there isnt the same
widespread and overt forms of racism there once was, I found it difficult (even as a black person) to
fully comprehend the fact that these were real people who suffered during the slave trade. What
would have happened to ME had I been living during that time? Not only am I black, but Im also a
woman. Its the reality of who I am NOW and who I could have been had I lived during those times that
"messes with my head" and makes me think beyond the literary aspects of the novel.
Who would YOU have been? Mr. Garner? Sethe? Denever, Miss Bodwin, Mrs Garner, one of the Pauls,
Sixo Halle? Baby Suggs perhaps? Schoolteacher or one of his nephews? Sethe's Ma'am or Ella or Mrs
Jones? Or Beloved and one of Ella and Ma'am's many "murdered" mixed babies?
To fully appreciate this book, I recommend reading it carefully (slowly) and aloud and if you dont
already, get ready to sleep with your lights on (I still do, 3 months after reading this book!).

This review is from: Beloved (Vintage Classics) (Paperback)
I really struggled to finish this book, it just seemed unnecessarily complicated. I read it for a book group
and managed to get the gist of most of the book through the discussion, but if I'd been reading it
alone I would almost certainly have abandoned it.
I suppose you'd call it a ghost story as Beloved died as a baby. She lives as a spirit in the house
occupied by her mother, grandmother, brothers and sister. When the boys leave and the
grandmother dies, we are left with just Beloved, her mother and sister. Beloved's presence becomes
more and more real as time passes, until we are led to believe that she is actually living in the house.
Meanwhile the story recounts the events that lead up to the family occupying the house. They were
originally slaves and the experiences they have had are, at times, quite traumatic. Unfortunately I
was not always quite sure exactly what was going on, where the baby was born, what happened to
her father etc.
I was sorry that this book was not more readable as the problems encountered when given their
freedom are every bit as interesting as the struggles of the slaves while in captivity. I would have
liked to have enjoyed this and learned from it.
I had previously read Sula by this author and only rated it 2*. I doubt I shall read any more Toni
Morrison.
