Maybe you have seen an artist at the fair, or at a theme park, hastily airbrush a couple’s portrait. Upon receiving this portrait, one can tell the couple has been depicted, yet in cartoon form. This method of creativity has to examine someone’s face and be able to draw out certain strong features of their complexion. Their purpose is to then exaggerate them on the page. This will create an accentuated parody of reality far from their actual snapshot. Yet somehow, if the artist is talented, the essence of the person will be main- tained. Some Christians are like caricature artists. They will go to the scriptures and draw out the cer- tain strong features of Jesus. Some of these features could be defined this way: Jesus is peaceful, easy, graceful, merciful, faithful, prayerful, patient, loving, humble, obedi- ent, giving, virtuous, wise, and forgiving. This is important but what about the character traits that are defined as just, bold, convicted, uncompromising at times, honest, demanding, and even angry (John 2)? When we only draw out the qualities of Jesus that we want from either list, we become the creator, rather than the created. We shape the narrative, the commands, and the teaching we choose to follow. We then have masterfully created a caricature of Christ. A mockery. One has a big head, massive smile, large compassionate eyes but a weak body. The other has a big head, angry eyes, gritted teeth, but a weak body. Jesus’ body, the Church, will be weak in both cases. We place Jesus in caricature when we look at the woman caught in adultery and only read John 8:10 and the first part of verse 11. “Jesus stood up and said to her, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ She said, ‘No one, Lord.’ And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you…’” We place Jesus in context when we read the rest of the sentence: “…go, and from now on sin no more.” We place Jesus in caricature when we read “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). We place Him in context when we read the full chapter especially John 3:36 “Whoever be- lieves in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. We place Jesus in caricature when we say, “where two or three are gathered” (Matthew 18:20). and apply it to worship, to justify forsaking the assembly. We place him in context when we read the verses above (Matthew 18:15-20) and we find this is dealing with conflict resolution and not worship. Are you the Creator, or the created?
