A Lens is a functional concept which solves a very common problem: how to update a complex immutable structure. This is probably the reason why Lenses are relatively well known in functional programming languages such as Haskell or Scala. However, there are far less resources available on the generalization of Lenses known as "optics".
In this slides, I would like to go through a few of these optics namely Iso, Prism and Optional, by showing how they relate to each other as well as how to use optics in a day to day programming job.

The Belapur Housing project in Navi Mumbai, also known as the Artist's Village, was designed by architect Charles Correa in 1986 to provide affordable housing for artists. The project consisted of 550 low-rise dwelling units spread across 6 hectares of land in a high-density development. Each unit was placed on its own plot to allow residents to freely modify and expand their homes over time. While originally intended for artists, few artists ultimately lived there as it was located far from Mumbai's urban center. Over the decades, residents have significantly modified the structures, often expanding vertically rather than horizontally as originally planned.

A Self Sustainable Community (Human Settlement) comprising all the activity to a range of Human Scale within the neighborhood interdependent to government or policies.
Radburn was a planned community developed in 1929 in New Jersey as a response to rapid urbanization. It included single family homes, row houses, apartments and amenities across 149 acres. Key features included separating pedestrian and vehicle networks using cul-de-sacs and footpaths, orienting homes around common green spaces rather than facing streets, and organizing commercial areas at block intersections. While innovative at the time, some elements like underused front green spaces and preferences for more private yards led to some failures in implementation. Overall though, Radburn demonstrated an early model for planned communities that influenced later suburban developments.
Landscape design in housing projects considers social, environmental, aesthetic, and economic factors. The Laburnum housing project in Gurgaon, India incorporated courtyards linked by pedestrian paths with water features. It achieved 100% basement parking with sustainable drainage.
The "Living Landscape" student design project received an award for orienting semi-detached homes to face the street with gardens in front. This enhanced neighborhood liveliness compared to conventional back-to-back homes. Grass roofs provided sculptural views of the extended landscape from neighboring living rooms.

Units include duplexes and triplexes priced from $174,000-$225,000, offering profits up to $51,000 per unit. With construction and sales of all units, the potential profit is estimated at $1.4 million. Existing infrastructure like septic systems and wells are already in place.
This document summarizes the water features and flow patterns on a homestead property located at the base of Wilbraham Mountain in Massachusetts. It identifies three main streams that flow across the sloped property from northeast to southwest, emptying into wetland areas. Soil maps show muck soils in the northern and southern wetlands. The document outlines challenges around water collection and transport for irrigation, and proposes catchment and greywater systems to better manage water distribution across the farm.

The document summarizes the Aranya Low Cost Housing project in Indore, India designed by architect B.V. Doshi. It accommodates over 80,000 individuals through 6,500 residences arranged in sectors, ranging from one-room units to larger houses. The project was planned at the township, sector, street, and dwelling levels to provide shelter and amenities to residents across income levels. It features vernacular materials, climatically responsive design like shaded streets, and community spaces to foster neighborhood. The project won the Aga Khan Award in 1996 for addressing affordable housing needs through comprehensive planning and design.
This document summarizes the Aranya Housing project located 6 km from Indore, MP, India. The 100,000 sqm project was completed in 1989 with a budget of 100 million rupees. It was designed to provide serviced residential plots for 6,500 homes of various sizes for different income groups. The neighborhood concept was inspired by existing slums and included mixed land use, small neighborhoods, shops within congested areas, and trees in public spaces. The site planning followed a central spine layout with six sectors to segregate vehicles and pedestrians while distributing built and unbuilt spaces. Climate-responsive features oriented buildings for ventilation and shaded outdoor spaces.
Radburn was developed in 1929 in New Jersey as one of America's first planned garden communities. It was designed by Clarence Stein and Henry Wright based on principles separating pedestrian and vehicular traffic through the use of cul-de-sacs and footpaths. The development included single family homes, row houses, apartments, and a central shopping center organized around extensive common green spaces within superblocks. While innovative at the time, some aspects of Radburn's design did not work as intended in practice and it faced financial difficulties, though its approach to integrating land uses and prioritizing pedestrian access influenced later suburban development.
The presentation summarized Goodwin's plans to redevelop the Goodwin Farrer retirement village site. It introduced the project team and discussed the need to update aging facilities to meet changing consumer demands. The site and context were described, and the existing village's history provided. Goodwin's project brief of allowing aging in place and meeting demand was explained. The masterplan developed by AMC Architecture was presented, showing proposed layout, unit types, facilities, landscaping, and staging strategy to minimize disruption. Questions from the community council were invited.

A NEW DEVELOPMENT WITH A DIFFERENT VISION FOR THE WAKATIPU
• Establish a separate“Hohepa Lake Hayes” residential community house that enables young people with disabilities to reside in a well
managed and caring environment with market garden work opportunities.
• Create Walker Village on the balance of the land-a walking, people orientated community where cars have low priority
• Create a community “heart” at the centre of Walker Village where the cafe, restaurant, farmers market and playground form a walking
destination for the entire Lake Hayes community via links into the trails network.
• Walker Village will have a variety of housing and work from home opportunities.
• Walker Village will build on the existing opportunities offered by the Chestnut Grove, to plant, harvest and market food.
SITE PLAN
A HOUSING LAYOUT THAT PROMOTES ENERGY CONSERVATION
• All houses will have a northerly aspect to maximise solar gain.
• Most houses are two storey, creating a compact footprint, and will have a shared wall.
• All houses will have pitched roofs capable of carrying PV units for heating and electricity.
• Water will be sourced on site via the Windemeer Aquifer, and stormwater collected into the new Walker Lagoon.
• Vegetable production, cropping and green waste composting will be encouraged on site

Water use – where it comes from, how it’s used, where it
goes
Potable water supply:
The site is located within the Windemeer aquifer area.
A recent ORC report, entitled Investigation into the Wakatipu
Basin Aquifers ( July 2014), shows there available capacity
in the Windemeer aquifer to supply potable water to the
proposed development. ORC Consent would be sought to
take groundwater from the Windemeer Aquifer via a new bore
to service the village. The groundwater would be pumped to
holding tanks and treated via filtration before being distributed
for household use. The houses within the village would have low
water use features such as low flow shower heads, front loading
washing machines & dual flush low volume 6/3 toilets.
Irrigation water supply:
The property would be irrigated using the Arrow Irrigation.
Mulching and soil management would be employed to minimise
water consumption.
Effluent disposal:
The main QLDC sewer trunk line runs in front of the land along
SH6. Consent would be sought to connect to this.
Greywater:
Fresh grey water irrigation systems that divert grey water from
showers, basin and laundries direct into gardens via subsurface
irrigation pods will be investigated eg Waterlilee.
Stormwater:
As the property is being developed with a very light footprint,
stormwater will be managed with low impact water sensitive
design. Swales, a pond and permeable paving to parking areas
would be employed in conjunction with soakholes to manage
stormwater.
At the heart of the development, within the existing
residential area, is proposed a social hub including a
community cinema, restaurant, café and playground.
This hub brings people together and forms the heart of the
community.
Walker Village is a people place.
A community intranet system is a social framework for
communication and provides lots of opportunities within the
village.
These include;
• Carpooling
• Shared car system
• Home rentals
• Bulk groceries
• Childcare
• Selling surplus produce
• News and notices

On site recycling
A community of 100-150 people produces a significant amount
of waste.
Every year more than 2,200 tonnes of food and green waste
from the Queenstown Lakes District is sent to the Victoria Flats
Landfill. The Council is committed to diverting this material from
the landfill and encourages the community to compost food and
green waste at home.
The Walker Village has a designated green waste and
composting area where food scraps and green waste will be
collected and transformed into compost for the gardens. No
green waste will be taken off site.
The Village is on the Council garbage and recyclables route
for taking non-compostable waste away. A collection point is
located near entrance so big rubbish trucks don’t have to enter
the village.
The choice of materials in houses will be subject to the following
criteria
• The type and volume of raw materials used in manufacturing
• The effects on health while the products are installed and
located within the building
• The durability of materials so resources arent wasted in
unnecessary maintenance and replacement
• The recyclability or safe disposal of products once they’ve
eached the end of their use.
By employing good management practices via a Waste
Management Plan onsite construction will be managed to save
both money and materials by
• Designing for standards sizes to avoid cut offs
• Off site prefabrication
• Keeping the design simple
• Ordering the minimum amount of materials for the job
• Recycling all site waste
• Providing contractors with clear guidelines on waste
management practices
