0 for 3: Edtech Startup Lessons Learned
I’ve been a part of 3 different education technology companies, all focused on the K-12 market. Each of these companies failed, but each for different reasons and in spectacularly different ways. This talk is a bit of a public post-mortem that focuses on 3 key lessons from each company, including a brief discussion on how we might have done things a different way if I knew then what I know now.

The research subjects were selected from a huge pool, considering their job roles at their respective companies (mostly MNCs) and their experience with enterprise systems. They answered a questionnaire to help us understand the business process reengineering and maintenance methodologies adopted by their firms, and also to know how prepared were their management and other influencers for a process change in their organization. The findings were then compared to understand how firms and their managements handled the changes without causing discomfort to their employees

Recommendations from former pragma employees
“Deb was a pleasure to work with. She was everyone's go-to person, even the upper management's. Deb is one of
the few who is truly good at multitasking. She is a take charge person, tackling every assignment with dedication
and a smile. When I began my position, she was my manager, but over time the relationship evolved into her being
my mentor. I would be honored to again have the opportunity to work with her.”
Fawad Syed , Consulting Engineer, pragma Systems Corporation
reported to Deborah at pragma Systems Corporation
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“It seems in every organization there is that one "go to" person that knows what needs to be done and knows how
to get it done. That is Deb. She has that extraordinary ability to anticipate what needs to be accomplished and then
proceeds to see it through. She is an absolute pleasure to work with.”
Jim Webb , Director, Business Development, pragma Systems Corporation
worked directly with Deborah at pragma Systems Corporation

“Deborah was a pleasure to work with. She is absolutely diligent and thorough with regards to accuracy and quality
of the work produced. Deborah was a wealth of knowledge at pragma Systems. She was always willing to help and
educate about the various aspects of the organization and it processes and procedures. She is not only
knowledgeable and capable, but willing to do the tasks assigned to her. Certainly a refreshing attitude that seems
increasingly difficult to find. She has a constantly pleasant personality that is upbeat regardless of the pressure of a
stressful work environment. I cannot say enough good things about Deborah and I would most certainly work with
her again if I had the chance.”
Anthony Moringello , Systems Analyst, pragma Systems Corporation

“It is my pleasure to recommend Deborah Amellio for employment. I have known Ms Amellio for over two years
during which time she worked as the central administrative person in the same office where I worked. I have been
consistently impressed with her attitude and productivity even during very difficult times. Ms Amellio is very bright,
motivated, organized, takes the initiative, and gets things done efficiently. I am confident that she will devote herself
to any position with a high degree of diligence. She is a quick learner and has demonstrated the ability to articulate
information and ideas in both verbal and written forms. Ms Amellio always interacts with customers and business
partners in a very positive and professional manner. She has also been effective in documenting what she learns
on the job so that any who follow may benefit from her lessons. I particularly appreciated Ms Amellio's willingness
to take initiative to help the office serve the entire company and its customers more fully. I recommend Ms Amellio
without any reservation.”
