Presented at IL Palooza, MacEwan University Library, Edmonton, AB on April 19, 2013. Abstract: Boring PowerPoint presentations are everywhere in academia. We’ve all seen them - and despite our best intentions to engage students, we have likely presented a few of our own. Drawing on “Presentation Zen” techniques effectively applied in information literacy instruction, this session will empower participants to embrace simple presentation styles that can facilitate learning through recognition of the brain’s dominant capacity for visual recall.

CODING, ROBOTICS, & STUDENT VOICE - OAME 2016
# T5.31 - Coding, Robotics, & Student Voice
This interactive session will focus on how coding and robotics can be integrated in the classroom and utilized to engage and empower students. Particularly for students who struggle with traditional paper and pen tasks, robotics can be utilized to differentiate instruction and provide greater ownership. In the session I hope to provide participants with the opportunity to try out EV3 and We Do robotics as well as various apps and websites for coding. In addition to providing lesson ideas, I will share my personal experiences with teaching coding and robotics. This including taking an elementary robotics team to a high school and university tournament. My robotics team was the youngest team and first elementary team to ever participate in the UOIT Engineering Robotics Competition in the event's 10 year history. Despite some of the students having behavioural and academic challenges, the students did extremely well in the competition placing first in many rounds and making it to the semi finals. After winning a trophy and being interviewed by City TV, the students found a new sense of confidence and pride in themselves. This led to improvements in their academic performance at school. These students, who before never felt like they had any voice in the school, now have a huge voice not only in the school but also in our board as they are now helping to develop training videos for the EV3 robotics. These videos will be used to help to train all teachers receiving robotics kits in our board.

This document summarizes a study on the use of interactive screens in two Danish classrooms to promote collaboration between students. The study found that while students were engaged with the screens, they often failed to truly collaborate and negotiate tasks. Interaction patterns showed light cooperation but few instances of deep collaboration. The technology alone did not ensure collaboration and teachers need guidance on fostering collaborative skills. New questions are raised on how teachers can improve student communication and collaboration and whether interaction patterns may change over time as the novelty of the screens wears off.

Open literacy & the problem of access refusal

Abstract: The swift evolution of Open Access (OA) publishing of scholarly works has been driven by researchers and librarians who recognize the societal benefits of these resources being freely available on the Internet. Especially in fields relevant to Science, Technology and Medicine, high quality OA content can benefit people conducting both personal and professional research anywhere in the world. These resources can prove exceptionally valuable to students whose access to scholarly research materials may be limited by costly journal subscriptions both while they are in school and long after they have graduated. This presentation will draw on findings from an exploratory research study that involved a survey sent to academic librarians across Canada questioning the degree to which they are educating students about Open Access research materials and their motivations for and against doing so. Based on participants’ responses, suggested teaching strategies and promotional initiatives will be shared with session attendees. Information literacy teaching methods discussed aim to foster a broader understanding of Open resources and overall scholarly publishing processes among students developing critical and sustainable researching skills.
Lightening students' load: An introduction to open textbooks
Free online textbooks (“open textbooks”) are becoming a reality for a growing number of students in higher education. This session will explore initiatives that are making this possible including the British Columbia Open Textbook Project and the Campus Alberta Open Education Resources Initiative. Participants will be asked to reflect on how open textbooks could benefit their own students both economically and in terms of student learning, while also considering possible drawbacks and implications that these emerging resources pose.

Learn how to tell a story about the scholarly and social impact of your work using both traditional and alternative metrics when documenting accomplishments in CVs, dossiers, and funding applications. This hands-on session will include finding and interpreting metrics in Google Scholar, Scopus, ImpactStory.org, ResearchGate, and more.

Details matter. Each of these presentations share tips and advice on getting the interactions and content on your website right for your users. MacEwan librarians look at how micro-interactions, the moments when we delight our users by refining the way we offer services, lead to macro-results. Get concrete recommendations for designing positive micro-interactions with library users in mind. Speakers use their own experience designing a new institutional repository to outline steps to identify, refine, and test micro-interactions with users, and highlight the impact of their strategy on the overall user experience.

Abstract: Publishing opportunities for undergraduate students continue to grow, particularly in university-hosted, student-led open access journals. The MacEwan University Student eJournal (MUSe) is a recent initiative that involves undergraduate students from across disciplines at every level of the publication process, from solicitation of submissions through to blind peer-review, and dissemination. These students are each actively involved with faculty mentors, affording them the opportunity to work alongside experienced academics while gaining insight and knowledge about the ways in which scholarly and creative publications are managed.
Drawing on the experiences of those involved with MUSe, along with related efforts of other undergraduate research publications, this poster describes in detail ways that journal managers can work to ensure meaningful and sustainable faculty engagement in student journals. This includes best practices for recruiting faculty mentors, and effective means of providing necessary support to ensure a worthwhile and engaging experience for faculty and students alike during every stage of the publishing process.

This session will provide an overview of ways faculty can easily and meaningfully engage with the online world by sharing their work. A variety of websites and services that are popular among a growing number of academics will be highlighted and discussed in terms of their benefits and potential applications. Common concerns around copyright and intellectual property will also be addressed, and participants will learn some practical ways to maintain and communicate their rights over works when placing them online.

Abstract: How do you engage undergraduate students with topics to do with open access to research on the Internet? Offer them popcorn, candy and comedy, of course! To celebrate Open Access Week 2013, MacEwan University Library held an Open Access Comedy Film Festival. The event featured daily showings of films that have entered the public domain from the likes of Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and The Three Stooges, along with brief introductions to what open access research journals are and where to find them online. The event turned out to be a uniquely fun and successful way to engage the university community with not only the open access movement but related efforts that embrace the free online exchange of ideas and creativity. Learn about how the event came together as well as recommendations the organizer has to offer anyone who is inspired to host a similar event at their own college or university.

Librarians are leading the way in creating future-ready citizens – now we need to update our spaces to match. In this session, attendees will get inspiration for transforming their library spaces. You’ll learn how to survey students and patrons, create a focus group, and use design thinking to brainstorm ideas for your space. We’ll discuss budget friendly ways to change your space as well as how to find funding. No matter where you’re at, you’ll find ideas for reimagining your space in this session.
