DayWatch is a concept for telling time in
a different but surprisingly logical way

In the old days the sun, moon and the earth were the only elements to measure
time. It is the rotation of the earth that provides rhythm in people’s lives. This
rotation creates day and night and changes the seasons. It is the position of
the sun that tells you all about the progression of the day.
This progression is in fact what time is; What’s left of the day before it gets
dark, what’s left of the night before a new day starts.
Here we find the origin of time.
DayWatch
- 2. The origin of timelies in the rotation of the earth. One rotation takes
24 hours; we call this amount of time a day. Ever since the first
human being living on this planet this day is the clearest indication for the passing
of time; it begins when the sun comes up and ends when it goes down. This is what
time is, the origin.
It is the rotation of the earth that provides rhythm in people’s lives.
This rotation creates day and night and changes the seasons.
In fig.1 night and daytime are equal amounts, which is not a realistic view.
We need to adapt to the times of sunset and sunrise to get a realistic view of the
day.
In fig. 2 the times of sunset and sunrise are aligned to the actual situation.
We now have a basic DayWatch view showing the exact day/night ratio. The day/
night ratio is changing during the year so the design of DayWatch is constantly
adapting to the seasons.
DayWatch automatically adapts to the times of sunrise and sunsets online
to adapt the day/night ratio.

DayWatch basic view
In fig. 3 the sun's position corresponds to
the moment of time, it's 14:00 hours
Connecting the sun to the horizon
divides the view in 3 parts:
1) the amount of daytime passed
2) the amount of daytime left before dark
3) the amount of evening / night time
fig. 3 also shows:
the time of sunset (19:30 hours)
the time of sunrise (04:00 hours)
the day / night ratio
This is the basic view of DayWatch
showing the real amounts of time
fig.4 Shows the common view for 14:00 hours,
(2 pm) this is only the (wrong) point of time, no
more information, no amounts.
All present watches display the point of time:
but time is not a point, time is an amount !
Time is the amount of ‘space’ you have left, on a
day, a year…a lifetime..
time is a valuable amount that is on the wane..

Main target groups for application are
In this document we primarily focussed on the watch industry,
more precise the smart watch industry. With state of the art
digital technology, we are capable of producing DayWatch in a
short term. No need to say that in this industry there is a huge
potential for this concept. The DayWatch concept can be
executed in lots of variations for various target groups.

DayWatch secundary functions
Weather warning
The DayWatch concept could make weather warnings
visible. Because we display time as an amount we can
also display parts of the day. By doing so we can show
upcoming bad weather periods during the day.
Time control
DayWatch also means: a look at your activities
throughout the day in single view.
This function can also sync with your agenda and,
for example, display your daily activities or most
important meetings.
It provides you a great overview of your events and
the ‘impact’ of an event on the day.
This also allows you to track your activities in relation
to your health or work-life balance.
Events can be presented as pie-shaped elements.
The red and green dots are markers for categorising.
When the time line approaches a new segment you
can be notified.
The pie shape will light up in the watch mode.
Other secondary functions include:
-adapt style (personal styling preferences)
-messaging (sound and txt)
-second display and functions (analogue time,
weather alert, message alert)
-SOS function
-daily health timer
-night time view
