David Ricardo was a famous British economist born in 1772 who achieved success as a stockbroker before retiring to focus on economics. He wrote about important economic concepts including wages, profit, rent, and comparative advantage. Ricardo believed wages tended toward subsistence level but could remain above that due to economic growth outpacing population growth. Profits decreased as wages increased because sales revenue was split between wages and profits. Rent was the portion of agricultural production paid to landlords for use of the land. Ricardo's theory of comparative advantage explained how free trade benefits all nations by allowing them to specialize in what they can produce at lowest relative cost.
