- This is Angela and Tim from Strode College. Strode is one of the colleges we’ve been talking to and learning more about this year, to really get to grips with the value they gain from their Jisc subscription and how we could do more. Angela, along with learners and tutors, told us what a difference digitised resources make to Strode as a small, rural college. Learners explained how they do their revision on the bus on their two-hour commute using e-books – and Angela no longer worries about the cost of books going missing. In fact, Strode would have to pay nearly £123,000 for all its digitised resources and negotiation if it didn’t have its Jisc subscription.
- We also commissioned an independent study of two HE member organisations, Cardiff University and University College London, to explore the value of the connectivity and cyber security services we offer and how these compare to other providers. It was clear that Jisc provides significant cost savings and helps avoid costs for both universities.
- Moving onto connectivity and Janet, over the past year we have increased the core bandwidth to 600Gbps. We were very pleased to do that on time and with no member disruption. The work we’ve done on Janet will give you a more cost effective, flexible and agile set of connectivity services – essential for the technologies you need for Education 4.0.
- This is George Wraith, head of ICT at New College, Durham. In May last year George signed his college up to our enhanced DDoS mitigation service. Distributed denial of service – DDoS – attacks are on the increase across both FE and HE. Now George can access the cyber security portal on a live basis at any time as well as get weekly reports and see if there’s been any mitigation needed. It’s given him, he says, “peace of mind”. We know that cyber security is a significant, ongoing concern to most of you and so last year we added the enhanced DDoS protection service that New College is benefiting from to the range of DDoS mitigation services available. It helps reduce the risk of losing your connection and avoid the inconvenience, reputation loss and financial damage that would follow. As well as directly protecting your IT estate through DDoS mitigation, testing your mail servers and sharing intelligence through our security operations centre, we also help you to protect your organisation. We have developed our professional security services, such as penetration testing, which simulates real-world attacks, and phishing training to give users the skills and awareness to spot threats.
- A key milestone in 2018 was the rollout of our national learning analytics service, the first of its kind anywhere in the world. Developed collaboratively with members, its potential to identify when students are struggling and support them appropriately with not only their academic or vocational journey but also their overall wellbeing is a huge step forward. [Something personal here about use of LA at Greenwich?] We’re committed to building our service support in the devolved nations. In Wales, all eight regulated higher education organisations have signed up to our Learning Analytics Cymru service and we also worked with the Welsh government to develop a digital learning strategy for FE and Skills across Wales.
- The digital experience insights service - the largest survey of its kind in the UK - shows you’re providing a great digital experience: 88% of HE students and 74% in FE are satisfied with the digital provision, and more than 70% in both communities satisfied with the quality of teaching Not all learners are convinced of the importance of digital skills – only half of college students and 69% of those in university recognise that digital skills will be important for their chosen career. We’re here to work with you on digital capabilities and use these insights to make your students’ entire digital experience the best it can be so they’re ready for the world of work
- Ensuring that the practice and methods of scientific research are rigorous and the outputs robust and reproducible is a major challenge and one that Marcus has been working on with us on through the UK Reproducibility Network. The launch of our open research hub is going to make a difference. It’s a cloud-based shared service for managing, preserving and sharing institutional digital research data, designed specifically to meet the needs of UK higher education. We have also started work to adapt the hub to meet UK Research and Innovation open access policy and organisational requirements as these emerge and evolve rapidly over the course of this year.
- Just a few examples of how Jisc Collections has been making a difference to students’ access – and librarians’ budgets – over the past year. With our new partnership with Airbus, students can now make the most of next generation geospatial data services, saving the sectors £1m a year in service costs. In fact, HE spend on digital content through Jisc increased from 45% to 48% this year, generating a further £100 million per year of savings to members. Or take our new Health and Social Care training service, with its 90 innovative learning resources. 112 UK colleges have subscribed to the free beta service.
- Our merger with Eduserv is now complete and means our collective expertise is now providing unparalleled technological support to more than 20 million users in several international markets such as the US, Australia and Scandinavia. Our integration with the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) and Higher Education Careers Services Unit (Hecsu) have both been announced and are in the due diligence phase. Paul will be talking a bit more about what these exciting developments mean going forwards.
- Briefly, we achieved 3% real savings on total net recurrent costs compared with 2017/18 after inflation. We restructured Jisc Commercial Limited and transformed it into a profit-making enterprise, from a £0.7m loss in 2016/17 to a £0.3m profit this year. The company’s debt to the rest of the Jisc group reduced by £0.6m this year, beating the target reduction of £0.5m.
