Testing is an essential activity in any engineer’s career. Whatever your role in industry (electrical designer, purchase engineer, manufacturer, installation contractor or maintenance engineer) a solid knowledge of tests to be carried out on a given piece of electrical equipment and interpretation of results obtained is a necessity. This workshop is designed to familiarise you with various aspects of testing general electrical equipment and high voltage testing in particular.
Examples will be cited from various international standards regarding the procedure for conducting of tests and interpreting the test results. The need for keeping proper records of tests conducted both in the initial stages and later during routine maintenance will be discussed. Some of the tests are too complex to be performed on a routine basis or may require specialised equipment which may not be normally available to user industries or even manufacturers. This is where the services of an independent and accredited test lab is useful. The role of such labs will be briefly discussed.

The Martindale Electric Metrohm E3511 5kV analogue insulation tester has both battery and mains operation. The Metrohm E3511 measures insulation from 100kΩ to 100GΩ, with 4 selectable DC test voltages (500V, 1kV, 2.5kV & 5kV). The E3511 has a large analogue scale which also displays AC or DC voltage up to 1000V. A latching test switch also allows hands-free testing on the Metrohm insulation tester.

Martindale Electric Metrohm METE3511 5kV Analogue Insulation Tester Description
The Martindale Electric Metrohm E3511 5kV analogue insulation tester has both battery and mains operation. The Metrohm E3511 measures insulation from 100kΩ to 100GΩ, with 4 selectable DC test voltages (500V, 1kV, 2.5kV & 5kV). The E3511 has a large analogue scale which also displays AC or DC voltage up to 1000V. A latching test switch also allows hands-free testing on the Metrohm insulation tester.
The Metrohm E3511 5kV analogue insulation tester offers a full over-voltage and over-current protection for measurements, with 14 - 16 hours operation from re-chargeable NiMH batteries. The Metrohm insulation unit is supplied in a rugged carry case with an accessory case that clips to the lid and will carry the supplied test leads and manual.

Car accident rates have increased in recent years, resulting in losses in human lives, properties, and other financial costs. An embedded machine learning-based system is developed to address this critical issue. The system can monitor road conditions, detect driving patterns, and identify aggressive driving behaviors. The system is based on neural networks trained on a comprehensive dataset of driving events, driving styles, and road conditions. The system effectively detects potential risks and helps mitigate the frequency and impact of accidents. The primary goal is to ensure the safety of drivers and vehicles. Collecting data involved gathering information on three key road events: normal street and normal drive, speed bumps, circular yellow speed bumps, and three aggressive driving actions: sudden start, sudden stop, and sudden entry. The gathered data is processed and analyzed using a machine learning system designed for limited power and memory devices. The developed system resulted in 91.9% accuracy, 93.6% precision, and 92% recall. The achieved inference time on an Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense with a 32-bit CPU running at 64 MHz is 34 ms and requires 2.6 kB peak RAM and 139.9 kB program flash memory, making it suitable for resource-constrained embedded systems.

The aquaponic system of planting is a method that does not require soil usage. It is a method that only needs water, fish, lava rocks (a substitute for soil), and plants. Aquaponic systems are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Its use not only helps to plant in small spaces but also helps reduce artificial chemical use and minimizes excess water use, as aquaponics consumes 90% less water than soil-based gardening. The study applied a descriptive and experimental design to assess and compare conventional and reconstructed aquaponic methods for reproducing tomatoes. The researchers created an observation checklist to determine the significant factors of the study. The study aims to determine the significant difference between traditional aquaponics and reconstructed aquaponics systems propagating tomatoes in terms of height, weight, girth, and number of fruits. The reconstructed aquaponics system’s higher growth yield results in a much more nourished crop than the traditional aquaponics system. It is superior in its number of fruits, height, weight, and girth measurement. Moreover, the reconstructed aquaponics system is proven to eliminate all the hindrances present in the traditional aquaponics system, which are overcrowding of fish, algae growth, pest problems, contaminated water, and dead fish.

The METRAOHM 413 is a battery powered instrument for the mea-
surement of low-value resistances in electrical systems.
Large protective conductor, earthing, equipotential bonding and
lightning protection systems can also be tested quickly and safely
with the METRAOHM 413. Resistance is measured between
reference earth (e.g. an equipotential bonding strip) and any
desired points to this end.
A measuring current of 200 mA and automatic functions assure
reliable measuring results.

Description
Easy Operation
Operation is very easy. Measurement cables of almost any length
can be used thanks to the offset balancing function.
Measurement polarity can be reversed, and both measured
values are stored to memory for subsequent comparison.
Resultant deviations in the measuring results (e.g. possible
galvanic voltages) can thus be recognized.
Offset Balancing
Offset balancing compensates for measurement cable resistance.
The offset value is saved to memory and is utilized for all future
measurements until balancing is performed once again. The value
remains in memory, even after the measuring instrument has
been switched off.
A variety of measurement cables with resistances of up to 3.5 Ω
can be used.
Protection Against Operator Error
The METRAOHM 413 is protected against inadvertent connection
to devices under test with fault voltages of up to 500 V by means
of protective devices.
Interference Voltage Warning
Interference voltage is indicated visually with a red LED, and
audibly with an acoustic warning signal. The voltage value is
displayed at the LCD as well, as long as the test probe makes
contact.
