Urea is an organic compound with the chemical formula CO(NH2)2 that is used as a nitrogen-release fertilizer. It is produced as a white, granulated solid with a minimum 46% nitrogen content. Urea dissolves in water and hydrolyzes into ammonia and carbon dioxide, releasing nitrogen that can be used by plants but its impurity biuret must be below 2% to avoid impairing plant growth. It is commonly applied to agricultural fields, pastures, and crops in amounts ranging from 40-300 kg/ha.
