Samuel Dashiell Hammett was an American author born in 1894 who wrote hard-boiled detective novels and worked as a Pinkerton operative until 1922, drawing on this experience for his writing. In 1934, after publishing his most famous work The Thin Man, Hammett's writing career declined as he embarked on a tumultuous relationship with playwright Lillian Hellman, producing little further art of his own. He died of lung cancer in 1961 at age 66.
