Responsible for optical component fabrication, where I was
promoted to the position of optical finisher during the mid 1980’s. I
manufactured production and prototype work generated internally
and externally to customers' and in house drawings and
requirements. Working closely with Design Engineers ensured that
new projects were drawn with a view to achieving high quality and
ease of manufacture, and continuous improvement of current
projects.
I also worked with Mechanical Tradesmen as part of a project team.
Working closely with Quality was essential to ensure that exacting
quality standards, drawing specifications and customer requirements
were met. During this time I also worked as a trainer, training new
intakes of Apprentices in optical fabrication.
My functional responsibilities included:
 Manufacturing precision optics to exacting quality standards.
 Self inspection and assessment of manufactured pieces for
acceptability.
 Testing using various test plates, gauges and technologies to
verify correct manufacture.
 Training of Apprentices.

Weapons Research Establishment Salisbury, South Australia
I was selected to participate in the intensive specialist on-site WRE
apprenticeship program in Precision Optics.
Through a series of lectures and practical working experience, I
gained an understanding of all facets of manufacturing and testing of
optical equipment including:
 Glass selection.
 Cutting, sawing, trepanning, grinding, smoothing and polishing.
 Cementing of Doublet and triplet lenses.
 Optical Contacting of Flat surfaces.
 Manufacture of proof plates.
 Testing, using various gauges and proof plates.
 Laser Interferometry.
 Internal angle measurement using Angle Dekkors.
 External angle measurement using Goniometry.
