Danta Dhavana
Danta Pavana
Ideal stick:10 Angula long, fresh, healthy, soft, without leaves or knots of healthy trees.
Indicated trees: Arka (calotropis), Khadira (Kutch tree), Karvira (Indian oliander) Karanja (Indian
beech), Amra (Mango tree), Arjuna (Arjuna) etc. Vata: liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) and Khadira
Acacia Catechu Linn.). Pitta: Nimba (Azadirachta indica ) and the Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna).
Kapha: Lata Karanja (Caesalipinia bonduc), Arka (Calotropis procera).
Contra indicated trees: Arishtaka (Soap nut tree), Bilva (Aegle marmelos), Nirguņdi (Vitex nigundo),
Shigru (Moringa olifera) etc. and Dry, sticky or foul smelling stems.
Method: Twig should be crushed at the proximal end, twice a day without injuring the gums.
Benefits: It removes bad smell and plaque from mouth, facilitate salivary secretion. It has proven
anti-plaque and anti-bacterial action [PubMed].
Contraindications: Persons with diseases of the teeth, lips, throat, palate or tongue or from
stomatitis, cough, asthma, hiccough and vomiting, weakness, indigestion, epilepsy, head diseases,
thirst, fatigue, alcoholism, facial paralysis, earache and the persons tired with over-drinking.
Danta Shodhana Churna (Su.Chi.24/7-8)
Compound consisting of powdered Trikatu, Trivarga, Tejovati, Saindhava, Madhu,
And Tila Taila should be used to clean each tooth by applying it on Danta Pavana. Nowadays paste
made of this compound is available in market.
Jihva Nirlekhana
Method: Tongue should be scrapped thoroughly after Danta Dhavana
with thin, smooth and flexible foil of gold, silver or wood, ten fingers in
length. Tongue cleaner made of plastic and other metals are also in
use.
Benefits: It helps to get rid of waste products accumulated in oral
cavity. It gives relief and removes the bad taste, foetor, swelling and
numbness of the mouth.
Gandusha and Kavala:
Method: In Gandusha, decoction or medicated oil is retained in the mouth
without movement up to 3/4th of it’s capacity. One should hold the fluid in the
mouth, till the nose and eyes start watering. In Kavala, one holds and moves the
solution or paste of the medicine in the mouth.
Contraindications: Gandusha should not be attempted by children under five
years of age.
Drugs: Kalka (medicated bolus) drugs in Kavala and Liquids are for Gandusha.
Benefits: Helps to remove viscid secretions and impacted food particles, helps to
perceive the taste better, to heal the ulcer and keep the tooth immobilized.
increases purity of voice and gives nutrition to gingival, periodontal ligament,
oral mucosa. It can be used to clean the oral cavity in all the cases where Danta
Dhavana is contraindicated.It has proven anti-caries activity [PMCID:
PMC4213966]. Gandusha has proven high efficacy than chlorhexidine in
relavance to plaque index and modified gingival index [PMCID: PMC4382606].
Pratisarana:
It is a kind of local application that mainly possesses therapeutic effects like
Shodhana (cleansing) and Ropana (growing).
Method: Choorna (fine powder) in approximately 1g quantity is mixed with
lukewarm water/ honey/oil to make a paste; which is taken on a fingertip and
then massaged on the gums with mechanical pressure exerted in in clockwise,
round direction. drug should remain on gingiva for 20-30 min. After that proper
rinsing was advised with luke warm water [PMC:3764883].
Time: Two times in a day after proper cleaning of mouth, for 3-5 min.
Tambula Bhakshana
Method: keeping in the mouth nutmeg, musk-melon, betel-nut, cloves,
cubeb-pepper, good betel leaves, camphor and small cardamom.
Benefits: Cleanse the mouth, impart a sweet aroma, enhance its beauty
and clean and strengthen the voice, the tongue, the teeth, the jaws and
the sense organs. checks excessive salivation, strengthen heart,
safeguard against throat diseases. It maintains salivary ascorbic acid
levels in humans. that may help prevent carcinogenesis in the oral cavity
[PMC:3892526].
Contraindications: Person with Rakta-pitta, Kshata-kshina, Trusha,
fainting, dehydrated, weak and suffering from dryness of the mouth.
Time: After a bath-meals-vomiting-rising from sleep.
