1) Daniel was appointed by King Darius to be one of three administrators over 120 satraps ruling the kingdom. Daniel's excellent qualities threatened the other administrators.
2) Unable to find faults with Daniel, the administrators convinced the king to pass a decree making prayer illegal for 30 days except to the king, knowing Daniel prayed to his God daily.
3) Daniel continued praying openly and was thrown into the lions' den as punishment. However, God protected Daniel and he was unharmed. The conspirators and their families were killed by the lions instead.
