Over the last 5 years the National Library of Wales have been on a Journey to becoming more 'Open'. With an Open policy in place, Wikimedia platforms have provided a vehicle for implementation, exploration and impact. The Library's National Wikimedian, will discuss the ethos behind the idea of being 'Open by Default' and the reasons for investing in Wikipedia and its sister projects. The newly launched interactive Dictionary of Welsh Biography timeline tool will be used to highlight not only what can be achieved through sharing open data but the process needed to reach such an outcome, from outsourcing projects and events to the sharing of Digital images and linked open data. Learn about the impacts of work, from community engagement to hundreds of millions of image views. The speaker will explain how converting traditional metadata to linked open data can help to enrich datasets, improve user experience, and offer new insight into old collections.

My talk will feature some of the outreach and promotional projects undertaken by the Library and Archive Service at Bangor University. These projects and activities fulfil our commitment to providing quality outreach work which opens doors between the University and the community at large. In the past few years we have completed a number of new and novel projects which have been designed to showcase the collections and offer original context in which to present the collections to the public. This led to Bangor Library and Archive Service shortlisted for a prestigious Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award (THELMA) for their outreach and community engagement work in 2017. As well as bringing Town and Gown together, these projects also provide an opportunity for Bangor students to volunteer and win employability credits working alongside specialists form various agencies. From a University standpoint the aim is to encourage the public to be comfortable in the University setting and raise learning aspirations of individuals of all age.
On Wednesday 29th January, the Doctoral Training Partnerships and Centres for Doctoral Training were launched at a conference at the University of Nottingham.

This group catalogue, launched in May 2014, offers an art-focused research experience within the WorldCat environment. Selected art library catalogues are searchable alongside additional content from a multitude of additional sources, promising more comprehensive results in a global setting. Powered by WorldCat, coordinated by the artlibraries.net committee, the project has been developed in the context of the Future of Art Bibliography initiative.
One by One: Building Digitally Confident Museums [SUMMARY]rdp5
One by One (see: one-by-one.uk) is a national research project which aims to help UK museums of any size better define, improve, measure and embed the digital skills and literacy of their staff and volunteers in all roles and at all levels. By introducing a new approach to digital skills understanding and development, the project’s objective is to create new organisational mindsets in museums to help support their digital transformation needs.
The project advocates the use of human-centred design principles, and this is demonstrated within the project’s own methodology: empathising with museum needs, through researching existing museum digital skills provision; defining what museum digital literacies are required to meet museum needs; ideating and prototyping a practical model of digital literacy-building within museums; testing out the prototype model within partner museums of different functions, sizes and locations; and then sharing the final proposed museum digital literacy framework with the sector.
‘One by One’ is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and is led by the University of Leicester in partnership with Culture24, together with a range of museum and academic partners: National Museum Wales; National Museums Scotland; National Army Museum; Museum of London; Derby Museums; and Royal Pavilion and Museums, Brighton; CAMEo (the Research Institute for Cultural and Media Economies), University of Leicester; and the Institute for Employment Research, University of Warwick.
In addition, the project has gathered an important group of strategic stakeholders to represent the needs of all museums, provide vital advisory support, and share and implement the project’s key findings: Arts Council England; Museums Association; Association of Independent Museums; Museum Development Network; National Lottery Heritage Fund; National Museum Directors’ Council; Collections Trust; and Nesta.
The project began in September 2017 and is due to complete in March 2020.

The Art Discovery Group Catalogeu was presented at the meeting of Art Libraries.net in Copenhagen, October 2014. The presentation outlines the content, interface developments and new horizons including data mining and language tagging for improved clustering and presentation, clustering journal articles, analysing data and improving data quality.
Fashion is an important part of the European Cultural Heritage, and it is increasingly recognised for its important research value to other academic disciplines, including arts, culture, sociology and communication. Since the beginning of the XX century some of the most important public and private cultural institutions and museums of applied arts in Europe have begun collecting and preserving garments, accessories, catalogues, fashion magazines and other documents and materials related to fashion.
This has resulted in a growing number of impressive and unique collections that Europeana Fashion will bring together online.
Despite the growing importance of fashion heritage, there is a lack of freely accessible fashion content and contextual information on-line.
That’s why the Europeana Fashion project has started a collaboration with the local Wikimedia Chapters around Europe -and not only- with the aim to bring new fashion related knowledge and content to Wikipedia, the World free encyclopaedia.
Since March 2013, the Europeana Fashion partners are organising a series of events in collaboration with Wikimedia, called edit-a-thons, in which volunteers from the Wikipedia support organisation and a crowd of students, bloggers, researchers, curators and fashionistas come together to edit and contribute new fashion related information to Wikipedia, using content made available by Europeana Fashion.
In his presentation, Marco Rendina will tell more about this collaboration and how it has started an online relationship that could expand our understanding of the fashion heritage and the online available knowledge of the fashion domain at large.

As the Centenary of the First World War approaches a plethora of projects and activities have begun to engage the public in the nation’s remembrance and commemorations. Many of these involve the collection of memories and experiences of the War passed down through families and across communities. Since 2008, the University of Oxford has harnessed the power of digital technologies to facilitate the collection of First World War memories and artefacts through an innovative community collection model, combining online and face to face engagement to crowdsource digital collections.

The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

This course will introduce you to the life and work of Andy
Warhol, one of the world’s most famous artists. It will:
•Explore why Warhol has international standing both within and
beyond the art establishment;
